In his request to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman, the Governor asked that she direct the Georgia Farm Service Agency to conduct damage assessment reports for all Georgia counties. Although damage was reported to a number of crops, those sustaining the most significant damage thus far are pecans, cotton, corn, peanuts, peaches, and vegetables. The state's pecan crop suffered significant damage as a number of trees were blown over and uprooted and a large percentage of the nuts were blown from the trees. Some peach trees also were blown down or uprooted. In cotton fields bolls were blown from the stalks and many of the stalks were blown to the ground. Peanut yields are expected to be reduced as there has been flooding of some fields, preventing harvest. Farmers may be unable to harvest much of the remaining corn crop as stalks were blown down in the fields. Some vegetable fields also were flooded, which could lead to disease problems caused by excessive moisture.
