National Honey Month by. the National Honey Board. In recognition of this event" the Georgia Beekeepers Association would like to offer the f 0 -11 ow in g information .on Georgia honeys. Ge O.I.g i a beekeepers produce more than three million pounds of honey annually from 52,000 colonies. More than ten differentyaiieties of honey 'arproduced throughout the state. Of these, the most popular or premium honeys are clover, gallberry, and tupelo in the south,. and clover and sourwood in the northern regions. Our guest colulJ1nist for this issue. is Dale Richter, Georgia Beekeepers Association, 158 Cookville Road, ,Leesburg, GA 31763, (229) 434-9902, -dalerichter@earthlink.net . The results of the recent Georgia Public Preferences and Values for Purchase of Agricultural .Conservation Easement (PACE) Programs Survey in Georgia indicate that there is a strong demand for preseryation. of farmlilnd and forestland relative to other types of prteserved lands in the state using conservation easements. The Survey, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, was prepared by John Bergstrom, professor, and Dmitriy Volinskiy, a graduate research assistant, Department of Agricultural and Applied Economies, the University of Georgia, Athens. . Strong support for farmland preservation. in tpe state using' private- donations and tax revenues has' been noted in Georgia Poll data, supporting the results of the PACE Survey. "As public demand for farmland preservation in Georgia expands ...farmland will beCome even more important for prioritizing and targeting limited publk and private funds," the Survey stated. The Survey ,asked respondents questions about conservation easement preferences, their attitudes related to agriculture and the .enviromnent, and other questions to help measure values and preferences for .program attributes. Those surveyed saw protection of farmland as compatible .and consistent with environmental protection, and also generally supported farmers and farmland protection. Results of the Survey can be used by Hall Farmland Edition h See Pages 2-5 Irvin Appoints Assistant Commissioners Galberry honey is a light to light amber color, and it has a "nice aromatic flavor with a pleasant after-taste," according to Robert Brewer, president of the GeQrgia Beekeepers Association and a Welch Beekeeper Association Certified Honey Show judge. Galberry honey usually is produced in late April and May. Clover honey is "tangy and flavorful," according to Brewer, with flavor depending on clover variety. This honey is produced in March through July, depending on the region. The late spring, early summer produced tupelo honey is a light colored, flavorful favorite of many. It is produced along the river banks and swamps of the deep south of Georgia. Sourwood honey is "a mild and delicious honey with a pleasant after-taste;" Brewer (Continued on Page 15) Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin recently announced two appointments to fill key positions in the Georgia Department of Agriculture. The 2003 production year was the 20th consecutive year the state was the leader in broiler production with 1.26 billion produced, and the ninth consecutive year it was ranked number one in the nation in value of broiler production. Georgia residents, the Survey said, want to preserve prime urban farmland to produce human. food crops, which is consistent with previous studies. " ...the priority on preserving farmland near urban areas refleCts the relative scarcity of (armland near urban areas and citizens' concerns about continued loss of green and. open space and other farmland amenities," according to the Survey. "The priority on preserving prime farmlaild used to produce human food crops is consistent with citizens' general desires to protect the valuable natural resources, such as naturally fertile soils, and maintain access to local, fresh food supplies." .'
