Agri-Leaders Face Challenge Never before has the agricultural industry faced s_uch a myriad of challenges ... environmental responsibility, food quality, -i n t ern a t ion a I competition, taxation, and weather related crop and animal stress, even itS' own identity. Facing these challenges and many others, the industry recognized the importance of developing the full potent.ialof its leadership base. After several months of research, planning and networking a sta.tewide agricultural leadership program was developed. A consortium of state organizations involved with the agricultural economy supported the effort Our guest columnist this week is Jimmy Hill, Executive Manager, Georgia AgriLeaders Forum Foundation Inc., 1217 Eagle Ridge Road, Dawsonville, Georgia 30534 or jlhill@alltel.net along with many key agricultural leaders in the private, academic and agribusiness sector. The Georgia Agri-Leaders Forum Foundation, Inc., formed in 1990, continues -to play a pivotal role in preparing current and emerging agricultural leaders for even greater leadership roles. The Foundation is a non-profit, 501 (c) (3) corporation and is managed by a board of directors composed of key leaders from Georgia agriculture and agribusiness. The miSsion of the Foundation is: "To provide a forum for developing individual leaders skilled in communications, educated in local, national and world affairs, familiar with the _changing needs of our society, and 'prepared to meet the .present and future challenges." It has been said that today's answer to tomorrow's agricultural_ problems and (Continued on Page 12) Special Handicraft Edition See Page 11 Wednesday August 4, 2004 Copyright 2004 Irvin Reviews Animal ID, Collection Systems Since 199t, the Georgia Beef Challenge, held in -cooperation with the Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity Cooperative in Lewis, Iowa, has allowed Georgia cattle producers to gain information on -the health, performance, and carcass merit of their cattle. Cattlemen have the opportunity to evaluate their cattle genetics, providing the mechanism to monitor steers and heifers while in a commercial feedlot, and to leam how their cattle compare to others throughout the beef industry. . The principal goals of the Challenge are to: 1) provide educational information to Georgia cattlemen regarding the carcass merit of their cattle's genetics and explore the feasibility of retained ownership and 2) improve the marketability of Georgia-bred cattle by establishing a database of feedlot performance and carcass information. From 1999 to 2003, more than 9,900 head of Georgia-raised steers and heifers have been fed through the program with TCSCF partners. Recently Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin traveled' to Council Bluffs, Iowa, to visit with feedlot managers and TCSCF directors to review animal identification and information collection systems used to verify sources and trace~ animal performance through cooperating feedlots. During Irvin's VISIt, Iowa State University .Extension Livestock Field Specialist Dr. Darrell Busby and his staff arranged travel to participating feedlots and set up discussions on the health of Georgia calves, electronic identification. systems, feeding programs, feedlot source :verification, and slaughter information. _ Dr. Darrell Strohbehn, professor of Animal Science at lSD, provided 'insight on the national ID program and how other countries are managing this issue, and Bruce and Ruby Bentley, -along with _six other feedlot operators, hosted tours of their feedlots near Lewis, Iowa. In addition, a tour Of the cattle feeding research facility at the ISU Armstrong Research Farm was included. The single case of BSE -in the United States announced December 23,2003, has reinforced the need for a national animal identification program. The first. step will record where animals reside or will reside. When fully operational, tracing an animal or group of animals back to the herd or premises within 48 hours will be possible. This is one issue currently facing all cattle producers. While many Georgia producers currently use identification as a management tool, the opportunity to FSA Election Process Begms For County Committees Agriculture Secretary Ann M: Veneman has announced that the county committee election process has begun and that America's farmers, ranchers and other agricultUral producers are urged to nominate local producers to serve on USDA's Farm ~Se:rvice Agency (FSA) county committees. "County committees play an important role in the local implementation and oversight of FSA programs," said Veneman. "We urge all producers to participate in local county committee elections;" Farmers who serve on county committees help to ensure FSA agricultural progr~s adequately serve the needs oflocal producers. Committees make decisions on county commodity price-support loan eligibility, establishment of allotments and yields, conservation programs, disaster programs, employment and other issues. USDA is implementing an enhanced outreach program to encourage greater .participation in the county._ election process by socially disadvantaged and minority farmers, Any agricultural producer, who resides within the local administrative area from (Continued on Page 12) increase the value of Georgia calves through feedlot" performance, carcass data, and breeding and management programs (Contiimed on Page 12) -Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin recently traveled to Iowa to -visi.t with feedlot managers .and review animal identification and information collection systems used to verify cattle sources and trace animal performance. The qualities of leadership springing up from within men and women cart navigatethe worst of storms and chart the most successful of voyages upon life's seas. The Foundation selects up to thirty men and women each year for participation' in its leadership institutes. Individuals may be nominated" or may apply directly to the Foundation. Six institutes are held each year and each institute focuses on different aspects of leadership. Four of the institutes are held in Georgia and' two are held in other locations. Four of the institutes are conducted from Thursday noon to Saturday noon with the other two being held generally Monday through Saturday. The institutes focus on key issues such as: what ma1.<:es a leader; exploring the policy and politics of agriculture and agribusiness; developing successful communication skills; investigating the challenge of change and what technologies and new practices are on the ... horizon; traveling to another agricultural intensive state to see what challenges and opportunities they face; and'fmally, how to put leadership skills and training to use for the benefit of Georgia agriculture and rural Georgia. Two hundfed and forty-eight men artd . women have graduated from the program since its inception. Currently 19 are enrolled in the 2004 class. These individuals have come from allover the state of Georgia. NR'CSAnnounces Cost-Share Grant The U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has announced the availability of $300,000 in cost-share funds for the construction of community nutrient management facilities' for, Georgia poultry farmers. Applications are due by 4 p.m. August 13, ~004. . "The purpose of these funds is to provide an opportunity for small poultry farmers to join together and have a way of disposing of their excess chicken litter in an environmentally safe manner,". said Cathie Wilson, acting state conservationist for Georgia. The NRCS willpayup-to 75 percent of .the cost (not to exceed $100,000) of constructing a composting and storage facility where a group. of farmers can bring their poultry litter for distributionto other farms that need the nutrientssimilar to a recycling center. Poultry litter contains' a high amount of nutrientsthat. can contribute to loss ofwater quality if it is highly concentrated in one area. In addition to other requirements,' the successful applicant must develop a "poultry litter . transfer .network" to receive enough litter to .fertilize .a minimum of 200 acreS of cropland or pasture according to a nutrient management plan. "In other words, the entity that receives a grant must be able to .develop a network of farmers Who have eXCeSS litter and a network of farmers who need the litter," Wilson explained. Applications and additional information can be found on the worldwide web at www.ga.nrcs.usda.gov under' Programs. Applications must be sent to: David Lamm, Assistant State Conservationist for Programs, USDA, NRCS, Stephens Federal Bldg., 355 E. Hancock Avenue, Athens, GA 30601.
