This year's crop is projected by experts to be one of the sweetest and best in a decade. The harvest is well' under way, and weather conditions have been good, according to the University of Georgia Extension Service. In addition, dry weather has kept disease problems 'to a minimum, and the dry, sunny, but cool spring has helped peaches become sweet this year. Peach harvest began the first week of May and usually ends about the second week of August. Trees are strong and healthy, the Extension Service said, and there is a good supply of peaches for shoppers to buy well into August. This month is the peak of the season and a good time to stockup on this popular fruit at a state far m e r s ' market, fruit stand or supermarket in your area. Peaches are quite versatile, as they have the USDA Moves Forward on Plans For National Animal ID System The U.S. Department ofAgriculture held a listening session June 18 at the Northeast Georgia Livestock Auctiqnin Athens, Ga., to provide a public forum to discuss a national animal identification program for all livestock and poultry. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin attended the session and met with Bill Hawks, USDA Under Secretary for . Marketing and Regulatory Programs, to discuss the development, structure and implementation of the program.' "A national animal identification. programwill help the government and industry more quickly control outbreaks of a variety of animal diseases and' reduce the economic impacts on the market," Hawks said. The program is intended to identify all food animals and livestock, as well as record their movement over the course of their lifespan. The system will allow for the tracing of all animals and premises potentially exposed to a foreign animal disease within 48 hours to ensure rapid containment of the disease and further protect U.S. animal health. USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has received more than $18 million in emergency funding from the Commodity Credit Corporation to initiate the development of the infrastructure and initial implementation of a system in 2004. The premises identification allocator will be initiated thi~summer and pilot programs will be funded to test the system. Implementation of a national animal identification system (NAIS) will be conducted in three main phases., Under Phase I, USDA would evaluate current federally funded animal identification systems and determine which system(s) should be used for a NAIS, further the dialogue with producers and other stakeholders on the operation of aNAIS, identify staffing needs, and develop any regulatory and legislative proposals needed for implementing the system. Phase II would involve the implementation of the selected animal (Continued on Page 11) perfect combination of flavor and nutrition, and can be enjoyed as appetizers, desserts and .practically anything in between. Peaches contain many important nutrients, including vitamin A, in the form of beta carotene, which been linked to a reduced risk of some forms of cancer, and tiboflavin, which is good for the eyes. They're also a good source of fiber. And, peaches are one of the lowest-calorie fruits, with virtually no fat, sodium or cholesterol. One medium peach contains 40 calories. . When selecting peaches, smell the fruit. The peach is a member of the rose family and should have a pleasingly sweet fragrance. Look for a creamy gold to yellow un.der-color. The red or "blush" of a peach is an indication of variety, not ripeness. Peaches should be soft to the touch, but not mushy. Look fora well- defined crease that runs from the stem to the point. Don't squeeze peaches since they bruise easily. Place firm peaches on the counter for a day or two and they'll ripen. Promptly refrigerate ripe peaches, and eat them within a week of purchase. Notice Ad Deadline for the August 4 issue is noon July 21 Department Schedules Special Equine Auction Genesis (left photo), a two-year-old Chestnut Saddlebred stallion, was impounded by Equine Health inspectors from the Georgia Department due to neglect and inhumane treatment. After months of care by Equine Health employees and concerned volunteers, Genesis (right photo) made a remarkable recovery and is one of the Saddlebred horses being offered at auction.by the department July 24. See page 11 for auction details. The Georgia Department of Agriculture will host a special equine auction July 24 at Henderson's Arena in College Park, Ga., that will showcase registered American Saddlebreds impounded from Elbert County last year. Under the authority of the Humane Care for Equines Act, 17 horses belonging to Richard and Christine McRae of Elberton were impounded by inspectors from the department's Equine Health section in January 2003 due to the couple's failure to provide the animals with adequate food, water and humane care and treatment. One of the horses was in such poor shape that it had to be euthanized.
