Vol. Wednesday May 26, 2004 Copyright 2004 Giant Snails Pose 'PiclvYIlWt-OWit 'P~ Ag, Health Threat Farms Provide Variety of Fresh Fruits, Vegetables Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Toimny Irvin is urging the public to assist in the hunt for giant African land snails. The snails are a threat to human health and a serious plant pest. Commissioner Irvin has instructed inspectors with the state Department of Agriculture to search for the snails at pet dealers, flea markets and other places exotic pets are sold. Commissioner Irvin's declaration follows a Pest Alert from the United States Department of Agriculture and recent seizures ofthe snail in schools and frqm pet dealers in WISCOnsin and other states. 'We want todetennine whether these snails are in our state and if so, eradicate them as quickly as possible," Irvin said. 'The confiscations in other states are of concern because some of the snails were found at schools. The schools were unaware of the potential threat to human health andplants. We want to make sure all Georgians are aware of the dangers associated with this pest." Ariyone .who has or has seen any of these snailsis asked to contact the Georgia Department ofAgriculture immediately by . calling 1-800-282-5852 or via e-mail at mevans@agr.state.ga.us or the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection. Service . (USDA APHIS) at 770-922-9894 or via e"mail at Philip.A.Bailey@aphis.usda.gov. . Officials with the Georgia Department of Agriculture- or USDA APHIS will remove the pests from any location and dispose of them properly. There are public health concerns with this type of snail because it is known to carry a parasite, the rat lungworm, that can cause serious diseases in humans such as eosinophilic meningitis. These diseases can be transferred to humans by eating raw, undercooked infected snail meat or (Continued on Page 11) Since Georgia has a long growing season, consumers are provided with a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables from the spring season to fall, and although fresh produce is available at state farmers' markets, roadside stands, and grocery stores, some people still like to pick their own fruits and vegetables. For those folks, a number of pick-yourown farms in Georgia provide fresh, highquality produce at prices lower than retail.. Equine Edition Set for July 7 The Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin special summer equine edition is scheduled for July 7. This issue will include notices for horse shows and events in July, August, and September, as well - as listings of horses at stud, boarding facilities and ads for miscellaneous equine equipment and supplies. A 30-word limit will be observed for these notices. Deadline for the edition is June 16. Only one ad per family per equine issue will be allowed. Notices included in the "Equine for Sale" category and "At Stud" column must be accompanied by a copy of a ivalid, negative Coggins test (made within--the past 12 months); otherwise, they will not be published. In addition, the Georgia Animal Protection Act requires boarding and breeding facilities to be licensed. Current license number must be submitted with notices for "At Stud" and "Boarding Facilities." Notices submitted without this information will not be published. For licensing . information and applications, call (404) 656-3713. Deadline Nears For DCP Sign-up The clock is ticking for producers who have not yet signed up for the 2004 Direct and Counter-cyclical Program (DCP), the U.S. Department ofAgriculture's s~ety net program for farmers. To receive DCP payments and ~void costly late filing fees, producers must update their contr~cts before the June 1 deadline, according to Steve Newton, state executive director of the Georgia Farm Service Agency. The DCP is designed to help stabilize U.S. agricultoreby providing payments to eligible producers who enroll their farms each fiscal year during the life of the current farm bill. .Both direct paymel;1ts and counter-cyclical payments .are calculated using base acres and payinent yields that have been established for each individual farrI1. Direct payment rates are constant. Counter-cyclical payment rates .vary with the average price of program conunodities each marketing year. When crop values are high, counter-cyclical payments are zero. "Before our agency can make any program payments, we must have an approved contract, eligibility forms and, in some cases, 2004 rental agreements on file at the producer's local FSA county office," Newton said. All producers, including owners and operators, sharing in the contract payments (Continued on Page 11) If you are planning a visit to a pick-yourown farm, consider the following factors to ensure you get the most from your trip: Consider the travel distance to the farm. Since you must supply your own labor for picking, it might not be worth traveling a great distance, even if the prices are .lower than retail. If the trip is planned more as a fun outing, then distance may not be important to you. Ariother factor to consideris price. Ifthe prices are not indicated in an advertisement, then call to inquire about price and availability before making a trip. Once at the site, customers. should note and obey all rules and regulations posted by the owners. Although the farm owners have. several adyantages in allowing customers to pick their own fruits and vegetables, they also take the risk that their crops may be damaged by unconcemed, careless or Ag Family Mourns Loss Of Past ~quine Director Bob Haralson, former director of the Georgia Department .of Agriculture Equine Health Section, died recently at his horse farm in Rockdale County. Haralson, who retired from. the department in 1997 after 23 years of service, was instrumental in several initiatives to improve Georgia's horse industry. He waS an original member Of the Georgia Horse Council where he served five years; helped work toward the passage of the Georgia Humane' Care for Equines Act; worked to help establish the Georgia Equine Liability. Law; and helped toward the publication of the Atlanta Equestrian Society's Guide to Horses in Georgia. In addition to managing the department's equine inspection and licensing program, Haralson also was instrumental in the establishment of the department's equine impoundment program. "Bob was trulya friend to our state's equine industry," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy IrVin. "His tireless efforts benefited the industry, and he continued to work with horses until his death. He will certainly be nllssed by the equine community." inexperiencedconsumers. Byfollowing the owner's guidelines for pIcking, consumers will help ensure they will have a safe and e~oyable. harvest while helping to protect. the farm property. Some farrI1s have rules concerning the use of containers. Although a few farmers provide receptacles for picking and carrying produce home, others provide only baskets or buckets for picking and some farm . operations do not provide containers at all. If you carry your own containers, keep in mind the crops you will be harvesting. For instance, you Will need.smaller picking and transporting containers for berries to Jninimize bruising. When picking larger fruits and vegetables, consider the weight of a: . full container; If you have a large container, such as.a bushel basket, you may get tired of carrying it around the field or orchard'and to the checkout area. When you get to the picking site, look for the location of checkcinand checkout areas. Before you start picking, note . whether you will be charged according to weight, .volume or count. Also, inquire if there'is a minimum quantity requirement. USDA has forecast thoe 2004 world. crop at a whopping 102.5 million bales- up 9 million bales or 9.6% from last year. It is significant and worth noting that all of this increase is expected to c'ome from ill'c"eased DoreI:gn acreage and production. The US. crop may actually be down slightly from last year. The 2004 US. crop is forecast at 17.6 million bales ,based on expected acreage and average yields. The world's demand for cotton is expected to once again increase after a slight decline this year, but the Longer to Plant Peannts The Georgia peanut crop was about half-planted by the middle of May and the US .crop is moving at about the same pace. Planting progress is a little ahead of last year but in line with the five-year average. Peanut acreage in Georgia aJ:id the Southeast is expected to increase this year due in part to higher contract prices. Several sheller contracts haye offered $45 above the loan rate or $400 per ton net price. Producers indicated back in March' planting 565,000 acres in Georgia. Favorable weather and prices could raise aCtual plantings another 20,000 acres. Subscribers: Create a Garden To Attract Butterflie~ CheckYour Mail Label Nothing brings a garden to life the way butterflies do! They are like having your flowers take to the air! 'Getting more butterflies to visit and live in your garden is easy; you plant what they like. The most important plants are called "larVal host plants." 'They are the ones butterflies need to lay their eggs on and that the, hatched caterpillars (larvae) need to eat. You see, most butterflies have very specific needs and will only lay eggs on one 'type or family of plants. Monarchs, for example, only lay their eggs on milkweeds and related plants. 'Although adult butterflies, will visit lots of flowers for nectar, they will pass over a garden overflowing with flowers to get to one of their larval host plants. Finding these plants is essential for them to reproduce, and butterflies will travel long distances to get to them. It is a matter of survival. Here are some common butterflies of ,Georgia and some of the larval host plants they need: ' Monarch- milkweeds, including butterflyweed, milkweed vines (Matelea) Spicebush Swallowtail - spicebush, sassafras Tiger Swallowtail - tulip poplar, green ash, white asg, sweet bay, wild cherry Gulf Fritillary- mollypop or maypop, green passionflower or other passionflowers Long-Tailed Skipper - members of the bean family . Silver-Spotted Skipper ~ black locust and other members of the bean family Zebra Swallowtail...,; pawpaw Pipeville Swallowtail- pipevine, snakeroot Buckeye - broad~leaf plantain, ruellia, gerardia Red-Spotted Purple -wild cherry Snout Butterfly - hackberry Hackberry Butterfly - hackberry, elms Giant Swallowtail - Hercules club, members ofthe citrus family Black SWallowtail- members of the carrot family including dill, fennel, parsley and Queen Anne's lace Painted Lady and' American Painted Lady - thistle Pearly Crescentspot - native asters Mourning Cloak - willows, elms Gray Hairstreak ~ beans, clover Olive Hairstreak - red cedar Henry's Elfin - blueberry The second thing is to have lots of "nectar plants." These are plants with flowers ,that adult butterflies can feed ()n. , _The best nectar plants have a large flower head or, cluster "of flowers" that the butterfly can land on ~andhold.to as it goes from individual flower to flower. A, gust of wind could blow them off course and it would take a lot of time and energy to get back to feeding, so they like to stay put and feed. ,Here are some favorite nectar plants that adult butterflies like: ironweed, butterflyweed, joe-pye weed, summer phlox, thrift, buttonbush, butterfly bush, abelia, lilac" lantana, liatris, vitex, native asters, goldenrod, . sunflower, tithonia orMexicansunflower, pUrple coneflower and zinIlia. If you are going to have a butterfly garden, you must ,remember that every caterpillar is. not your enemy. Learn to tolerate a few chewed leaves. Refrain from using insecticides or use theIl! carefully. They won't just kill insect pests; they kill the pre.tty butterflies you want to attract, too.
