Vidalias are sweet, yellow onions grown exclusively in a 20-county region- - in Georgia, but loved by consumers all over North America. Their mild, sweet taste makes Vidalia onions more versatile than onions with a stronger taste. Vidalia onions are available from late April through mid-July. The crop is planted from September through February each year, with 70,000 plants produced on each acre. Similar onion hybrids are grown in and other. parts of thecQuntry, but. the combination of sandy soil mild climate provide the Vidalia onion with its distinct flavor. Vidalia onions are a good source of Vitamin C and dietary fiber, while low in calories and fat, and cholesterol free. Vidalia Onions Are Good For You Nutrient analysis: Serving size 1 medium onion (150 g) Calories 60 Protein 1 g Carbohydrate 14 g Fat 0g Cholesterol 0 g Sodium 10 mg Calcium 38 mg Dietary fiber 3 g A Buyer's Guide to Vidalia.Onions Vidalia onions should have a light, golden-brown bulb and a white interior. They should be rounded on the bottom and slightly flat on the top. . Vidalia onionsbtuise fairly easily, so handle them carefully. To enjoy Vidalia onions longer than the 10-12 weeks they're available each (Continued on Page 11) Vidalia is a: registered certification mark of the Ga. FIUUft Tom 1_ Sudden Oak Death Update, Consumer Alert By now many of you have heard or read about the Sudden Oak Death fungus that was discovered on plants in Georgia nurseries earlier tllis Spring. Articles regarding this serious disease have appeared in numerous newspapers as well as the hi8t two issues of the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin. First of all, let me say that no one knows Jor sure if this fungus will. survive and do well in Georgia's climate. There is still much about this disease that we do not know. For instance, we do not know all of the plants this .disease will attack and many of the known hosts grow only on the West CoasL We are very concerned about the impact this disease could have. on our forest ecosystems. .Sudden Oak Death is primarily a forest disease that is spread through the movement of. nursery stock. As you know, oak trees are a major source of food and shelter for our wildlife. It is , common knowledge that the Sudden Oak Death fungus will kill oak trees, but it is Vidalia Onions Product of Georgia Grown and packed by John Doe Fanns 1 Onion Road South, GA 00000 912-000-0000 unknown how much it could or. will change our forest systems if it were to become established. One proven fact is that thousands of oak trees in California have been killed by this disease. To complicate matters further, there is no known cure for Sudden Oak Death once a mature tree is infected. It is not possible to apply preventative fungicides to mature stands of trees in a forest setting. The only known way to "control" Sudden Oak Death is by prevention and exclusion - by keeping potentially infected plants Qutof Georgia. For this reason, the ban on all genera of plants from California that can serve as hosts for this disease is still in place. Unfortunately, this list inclUdes many popular garden plants such as roses, camellias and pyracanthas. Since the discovery of Sudden Oak Death fungus, the horticulture industry has fully supported our efforts to keep this disease from becoming established in Georgia. I believe all of us realize that if Sudden Oak Death were to be come established here, it would be even more costly than being short a few nursery items for a brief period. (Continued on Page 12) Special Consumers should read package labels carefully before purchasing Vidalia onions. Georgia law requires the following information to be on each package of Vidalia onions sold: Vidalia is a registered certification mark of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, complete name and address of the grower (phone number of grower is optional), statement that the onions are Georgia grown or a product of Georgia, and the net weight of the package contents. Handicraft Edition See Page 12 Copyright 2004 GaAgSurvey Planned in June To gather reliable, objective information on Georgia agriculture, the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture will. survey farmers for the June Agricultural Survey. There is always speculation about each new crop season, and agricultural producers are the main source for the facts. "If we speak up and answer the questions< about the 2004 crop season, we can help reduce uncertainty in the agriculture marketplace," said Dav-e Abbe, state statistician with the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. The Georgia unit will be conducting the survey, as a representative will contact local producers between May 20 and June 14. Some respondents will be chosen from sampled areas of land identified on aerial photographs. This survey is particularly vital since it will provide the first clear indications of the potential production of major commodities in 2004. The information gathered is widely (Continued on Page 11) Notice Ad Deadlble for the May 26 issue is noon May 12 Page 10 THE MARKET BULLETIN Bulletin Calendar LIVESTOCK SALES & EVENTS May 15 Crabapple-Festival, rain- or shine, May 15 Regd.Horse Sale, MorganGly.
