Producers may Department of Agriculture~' Livestock question whether this is a just: or unjust In those "old cotton fields back home" in Georgia, many farmers are considering , growing something else, and for some, it' , just might be strawberries. " ' 'Greg Fonsah, an Extension Service economist with the University of Georgia' College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, for one thinks the future is brighi for strawberries in Georgia. "We have 159 counties; and most of the countie's don't do strawberries," he said. "Those counties that do grow ,them, especially' for pick-your-own operations, are going to have a good market and good prices." That's true if a ne:;ighboring farm doesn't have a head start, said' Gerard Krewer, a UGA Extension' Service horticulturist. He added the market is "overplanted" in some areas and suggested that new farms open at least 30 Market News Service. The first article discussed' why certain livestock 'were not included in market repom:. The following' article discusses reasons cattle can receive , discounts or premiums when sold. Some producers are puzzled why their animals are discounted when they sell them ata livestock sale. Livestock can l?e ' discounte.d for many reasons: Color ~. Most livestock with an' . unknown genetic, background are' purchased based on, weight and color. For example, an order bllyer receives an order . fo~ a load of black and bl~ck baldy cattle only; no. Limousines, Simmentals' or' Brahman crosses (i.e. ear). Ten years ago these cattle could have been discounted due to small frame size. However, today, due to the Certified Angus Beef (CAB) premium, ,. the'demand for these cattle have increased. ,.As -a, result, the demand for cattle of other practice, but it is happening nonetheless due to market su'pply and demand. :. ' Horns - Buyers prefer polled or dehorned cattle because they fight less and inflict fewer injuries to each other. Ifthe cattle are. dehorned, they must be completely healed. ' , Fill - Excessively filled cattle will be discounted or pen,cil shrunk. ' Bulls - One would think uncastrated males would receive a' discount over castrated and healed males; and under most conditions, this would be true. 'However, many, more calves under 500 pourds are not castrated compared to' those that' are. Unless a load of all castrated males can be , assembled, both castrated and non-castrated -males would be combined for a'load, often, ,res.ulting in no premiums being paid for castrated Individuals. Bulls over 500 Ibs. are disco:Unted because buyers prefer steers miles 'away from an existing one. ' But Krewer and Fonsah both are Confere~ce,. Pro~.ides Opportunities confident in the potential for pick-yourown strawberry farms, especially those closer to metropolitan areas and on major , highways With heavy traffic." There's For Ga. Companies to' Trade' With Cuba I . _ . Commission,er Tommy Irvin 'and other countries; however, Cuba had to pay international trade representatives from higher prices 'and ,greater transportation Pick-Your-Own Strawberries the Georgia Department of Agriculture attended the 2003 U.S. Cuba Business c'osts for the goods it purchased. In July 2001, the V.S.. government announced See page 6 Conference in Cancun, Mexico, Feb. 1718, to further trade opportunities fot new regulations that allowed for the direct ,~ale of certain goods to Cuba by U.S. potential for a ri~g' of farms' around Atlanta where the demand. is much . greater," 'Krewer said. "It takes around 30,000 people to'demand one acre of strawberries. Some Georgia counties don't have that many citizens." Pick-your-ownfarms are part of agritourism, an increasingly popular trend Georgia agribusinesses. For the last four years, Irvin has pushed for the establishment of commercial relationships and unilateral _ trade between the U.S. and Cuba, and this trip allowed him to continue his efforts to' expand Georgia agricultural exports to that country. During the years of the U.S. economic companies. "Cubans buyers want to purchase products ,directly from suppliers," Irvin. said. "Because of our 'close proximity ,to their country, they are interested in 'trading directly: with our Georgia suppliers.." , ' Irvin noted that the conference allowed_ attendees to talk d~rectly to buyers and Cubangovernmentofficiills. (Continued on Page 12) embargo, Cuba purchased goods from "The country's top buyers and regulators attended ,and U.S. company agconsumer line representatives were. able to 'meet with the people they will be selling,to," Irvin said. How is the peanut classified? , "These meetings helped to' lay the Surprising though it may be, the peanut is not a true nut. It doesn't grow on trees. It groundwork for commercial relatiqnships isn't harvested above ground. Instead, peanut pegs (where the nuts form on the peanut in the future." plant) develop on ~e base of spent flowers and bury' themselves in the ground. To Conference speakers included Irvin harvest the peanuts, you dig up the plants. Peanuts are a mem~r of the ~egume family. and top U.S. and Cuban officials. Steers are preferred by feedlot operators because they generally are more docile than bulls. Also, the beef marketing system favors steer carcasses, and steers can be marketed, through, more channels. , Breeds,- Certain, breeds may be discounted. Whether producers believe this is just or unjust, it is important to understimd why this occurs. Brahman or Brahman-cross are, examples of this at certain times of the year. These breeds are - heat. tolerant and therefore do not grow much hair. As a result, they do not tolerate cold weather very well and consequently buyers from northern states do no want to buy them during winter months. If they do, , purchase cattle of these breeds, they will only do so at a discount. Weight - .It ismo~ difficult to make load lots of heavier cattle in the South since most cattle are shipped as weaned calves or short yearlings. Cattle over 7~0 pounds are fewer in numbers and can be discountedif they are marketed in less than load lots. Condition - Thin condition is preferred, , but fleshy or very thin condition can ~e . discounted. Frame - Extremely large frame cattle (I.e., logical slaughter potential that yields a carcass in excess of 900 pounds)" or small frame cattle (logical slaughter potential that yields a carcass' under 600 pounds) can be discounted, Muscling - Very thin or doubled muscled cattle can be discounted.
