In many 'communities across Georgia, a broad cross-section of citizens share a common interest and concern abouJ preserving farmland. Over the' past 10 years in Georgia, the combination of low profitability in farming and high farmland prices sold. for d,evelopment have resulted in the conversion of large amounts of farmland to residential and commercial uses. For many farmers, selling their land for development is a. rational and willing financial decision. Other farm'ers, however, would like to keep their land in farming, but feel forced to sell their land for development because of low farm profitability and .other problems, such as conflicts with suburban neighbors. The 2()02 Farm Bill 'amended the Food Security Act 'of f985 to include authorization for this program. ' "Grasslands provide critical ecological benefits' and play a key role in' environmental "quality, as well as contributing to th~' economics of many areas," said Leonard Jordan, state conservationist for the NRCS. "This voluntary program helps protect valuable grasslands from coriversion to other land uses, thereby helping to' ensure this national resource is available to future generations." Applications' for participation' in the ., GRP willbe accepted on a continuous' basis at local' USDA' service centers. Applications will be.ranked using a scoring system that considers threat to conversion, support for grazing operations. and "biodiversity' of the offered acres.
