No. 23 Wednesday June 4, 2003 Copyright 2003 '10 Sign-up forCRP Extended to June 13 U.S. ,Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman recently' announced that sign-up A Persona] Letter to Bulletin Readers From the Commissioner of . S.ummer Equine Edition -Scheduled For July 9 for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) has been extended to June 13, 2003. "Farmers and ranchers' interest in the general sign-up has been. very' strong," said Veneman. "This extension will" give producers who are busy with this year's planting season more time to sign up for this .highly successful environmental program." . CRP is the nation's largest private lands environmental improvemenJ, program. The program protects' millions of acres of American topsoil from erosion, provides' valuable wildlife habitat and safeguards America's , streams and other bodie's of water. The 2002 Farm Bill authprized CRP enrollment up to 392 million acres; CRP parti<::ipants voluntarily remove environmentally sensiJive land; from agricultural production by entering into -long-term contracts for 10 to 15 years.' In exchange, participants receive ,annual rental payments and a payment of up to 50- percent of the cost of establishing Dear Readers: When I became -Commissioner of Agriculture, I pledged to you greater services through - the Farmers -and Consumers Market Bulletin.. Shortly after taking office, I wrote an article for the Bulletin stating that it was my desire to make the Market Bulletin YOUR paper; The activities of the Georgia Department of Agriculture 'touch all - GeorgIans in some way every day, and I believed then, as I do .jow, that the publication should serve each of you. In that article I asked all of you to share _your suggestions_ in order to make the Market Bulle}in the !;Jest ..public\ltion possible. To that request, you responded magnificently, and many of your- ideas were incorporated into the publication. , Unfortunately, while (would like to -continue improving service to our readers and- advertisers, the legislature, in its final conference report of the 2003 legisllitive sei>sion, accepted the Senate cut in the state budget 'to 'reduce the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin t9 an every beneficial services provided by our department and it reaches a greater number.of people than mimy other services performed by our state government that <::ost a kit more money. Many of you have expressed to-me how important the Bulletin is to you and how much you depend upon it. Based upon the recent-cutin funding, it is obvious to me that - some of our legislators do not realize how valuable 'all of -you consider the Bulletin. . However, it is within the power of the governor and the state legislilture to restore this appropriation. As a former member of the General Assembly, I know your local representative and senator and the governor would appreciate hearing from you. If you would like to see the Bulletin return to a weekly publication schedule, I encourage _you to- send them a message by mail, fax or e-mail. . If interest in the publication is as strong as in past years, and if enough support is generated through letters, faxes, and e-mails, then I think it is possible to have the Bulletin totally funded in the legislative session in Januafy 2004: The Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin special summer equine edition is scheduled for July 9.. This issue' will include notices for horse shows and events in July, August, and September, as -well as listings of horses at stud, boarding facilities and ads _for miscellantNotice of AuCtion E9uine Pursuant to'Section 4,'13-7 of the Official Code' 'of,.
