(Conti.nued on Page 12) .- Naval Stores I~portant Part Of Early Forest Industry Naval stores produc;ts has been a part of Georgia agriculture since 1733 when Gen. James Oglethorpe brought the first settlers here. In a few years, this industry grew, as Georgia began to export tar, pitch, turpentine and rosins. -A topic of Colonial legislation during this time was the regulation of naval stores. as minimum weight and volume were soon specified for a barrel of pitch, tar and turpentine, and the items. were required to be checked for purity and quality before export. It turned out Georgia's pines proved to have a higher rosin content than the trees of other colonies. where the naval stores industry began. Because of this. the industry moved here on a large scale in the 19th Century, quickly prospering along the coast until the Civil War. The war almost ruined the industry, but large forest acreage still remained and forest products, including naval stores, became one of the most feasible industries for the state to develop. . Turpentine distilleries began to move into southwest Georgi-a. and in 1872, H.H. Tifton ~st':lblished the industry in what became the city of Tifton. As ind'ustrialization and manufacturing increased in the V.S., new needs for naval stores products developed. The increased demand for the products aroused much interest in the state's pine belt and other pine areas to the south and west. Georgia jed the nation in naval' stores productio!l from 1880 until about 1905 when Rorida took the lead. Georgia regained its position as top producer in 1923. Except fOf improved methods of chipping trees _ and more advanced .equipment for receiving and processing - gum, the basic techniques of the tar. and turpentine industry have...-changed little , since its beginnings. In the early days. a -cavity or "box" was cut into the base of the tree itself to serve as a reservoir for the gum. Boxes normally were cut eight to 12 inches above the ground, and held about three pints of gum. The boxing system did have its disadvantages. After the fiist or second year of working a tree, the gum had quite a distance to run before draining into the - box. This caused the gum to harden on the surface which resulted in a loss of turpentine content and in lower grade rosin. Also. gum accumulated around the base of the tree near the box, creating a fire hazard. But the !!reatest disadvantaQ:e ..vas injury to the t~ee~, as boxing dainaged the wood, making it unfit for lumber harvesting. A receptacle for catc.hing gum was patented in the U.S. in 1868, but was not used in America until after the tum of the century. Dr. Charles Herty, a chemist with the University of Georgia. began promoting the ne~ system, and' is given much of the credit for the change from boxes to cups, which began commercially in 1904. , When the cup and gutter system was introduced, the cups were made of clay in the shape of a flowerpot. Because they were bulky and broken easily. the clay cups were replaced by galvanized iron and later plastic. In late 1930, experiments were conducted to test the effects of vanous chemicals in stimulating gum flow. The most effective stimulant was' determined to be a low percentage solution of sulfuric acid. In 1950. spiral gutters and aprons came into use. These gutters and aprons caused less tree damage during installation and could be easily removed to allow. rotation among trees. Peanut Month. a time to celebrate one of the favorite foods in Georgia and across the U.S. Roasted 'in the shell for a ballpark snack. ground into, peanut butter or tossed into a salad or stir-fried. peanuts find their way into 'everything from bre'akfast to dessert. The Georgia Peanut Commission is celebrating the event by welcoming tourists to the state with samples of peanuts and recipes. This event involves all of the Georgia Welcome Centers. The promotion, "Travel Light . . . Pack Peanuts" encourages visitqrs to the state to travel with a fun and healthy snack. Each welcome center is distributing recipe brochures and nutritional information about peanuts throughout the month-long promotion. The Commission is traveling to the Valdosta and Savannah welcome centers to fry peanuts for tourists. i\ational Peanut Month had its beginnings as l'Iiational Peanut Week in 1941. It was expanded to a month-long event in 1974. Coincidentally. March is ~ational Nutrition Month - a great time to recognize the nutritional value of peanuts. One serving- of peanuts is a good source of protein, vitamin E, niacin. folate. phosphorus, _and magnesium. Peanuts are naturally cholesterol-free and low in saturated fat. Here is a. description: The "Irish" meal box, or meal bin, was a piece of furniture origimilly designed by carpenters in Cork County, Ireland, but continued to be built in the northeast Georgia mountains by Scott-Irish immigrants who settled there. The piece_ stands about three feet tall and is near 3 _ feet long by 1 _ feet wide. The bin includes two compartments, protected by a hinged lid, that were primarily used for the kitchen. While the back of the bin is straight and would sit flush against a wall, the front is tapered - angling iii, toward the back of the piece, at a slight angle of roughly 25 degrees. The bin wouldn't be as deep as its height, but would have four legs that are cut from the sideboards and measure roughly one foot of the entire three feet of the bin's height. . For those .artists and craftsmen who would like to sell their work at a show or festival. but" cannot attend themselves for one reason or another, there is an altemative for them in Georgia. Senior citizen craftsmen who are active in quilting, knitting, croc~eting, etc., might not be able to tran~port their handicrafts to a show or sit behind a. crafts table all weekend. However, shows like the Oak Grove Festival in Pine Mountain, Ga., are offering these craftsmen a chance to seil their items on a consignment basis without actually having to be at the show. One such crafter, Iva Blissett, a retired 84-year-old school. principal from Lawrenceville, Ga.. sent many items. including knitted Christmas stockings, crocheted afghans, ~d baby booties to the show's seniot co-op section where volunteer Elaine Beall set-them up for her in a decorated 15 x 15-foot space. . "It was a great success for me,: Ms'. Blissett said. "I have trouble walking, but I can sit and knit all day:' The concept Was designed to help Georgia retirees who make crafts at home to be able to market them, even though they areno( able to attend craft events. Here's how it works: The craftsman ~ates a list of hlsiber items, then numbers, labels, and prices them.. Everything must be handma~e by the person submitting the items. In addition, a brief biography and pOssibly a .photo, should accompany the crafts, since potential buyers like to yisualize \vho made . the items. - ~ls. Blisset tied small name cards to each item with a price listed. When her volunteer. sold an item, she clipped the card as the record of what was sold. After the shO\v~ the cards were tallied and matched against the list supplied by the crafter. _"It's rewarding for everyone involved," said visitor Jo Ann York who bought jingle bell socks and stocking stufferS for her friends. . The program started as a result of an "Accepting Applications" notice in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin. as a need was !dentified for a marketing and sales outlet fcir senior citizen handicraft makers. "It wasn't my original intent; but we had so many calls from retirees who no longer had the means to attend festivals to sell their handicraft." said Patricia Striplin, Oak Grove Festival coordinator. "We felt compelled to try to help. With the day-to- day activities of putting a festival together, and the need to keep costs down. we _ realized that h!J,ving volunteers run the_ senior co-op booth_was a critical c.omponent." The Oak Grove Festival will be held on April 18-20. For'moreinformation, call Patricia Striplin or Art Dewar at (706) 66~-0268.
