Vol.~ No.10 Wednesday March 6, 2002 Copyright 2002 USDA Computer System Department Establishes Protocol To tie 'Farmer Friendly' U.S: AgricultUre Secretary Ann M. -For Blueberry Shipments to -Canada Veneman recently announced that farmers and rural residents will soon benefit from a common customer computer data bas'e used by agencies in U.S. Department of Agriculture Service Centers. The database, called the Service Center Information Management System, or SCIMS, will help reduce the paperwork requirements for USDA progranis and will lead to customers being able to sign up for programs from their home computer. . ''These enhancements to the information system will lead to our customers being able to access their individual records, apply for loans and sign up for USDA programs from their personal computers or other remote locations," said Veneman. In order to eliminate the additional cost of fumigation to the grower, the Plant Protection Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture _has been working with Canadian officials to allow Geo(gia gro~ers to participate in a Blueberry Certification Program. Under this program, growers must enter into an agreement _with the Department of Agriculture and use traps to sample for adult flies. Once adults are detected, the grower must begin an insecticide spray program. Plant Protection Inspectors will inspect treatment records and fresh fruit shipments in order to certify compliance with this program. The deadline for participation is April l. , If you -are intei:ested in shipping - blueberries to Canada or participating in . this program, please contact Barry Smith at 229-386-3464 (Tifton) or Mike Evans USDA programs.
