Spanish Clementines Removed -from Sale in Ga~ GAC Provides Program .Public Meetings The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) has announced public meetings scheduled to inform interested -- parties within Georgia's coastal region of the September 19, 2001 dated revisions to the ';Interim Strategy for .,Managing Saltwater Intrusion in the Upper Floridan Aquifer." The meetings also will address the current. status of the on-going _Sound Science; technical studies. . United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) that live larvae of_ the Mediterranean fruit fly, commonly referred to as Medfly, have been found .on clementines in North C,arolina, Maryland 1J.nd Louisiana. Clementines are a smaIJ orange siniilar to tarigerines. Clementines from Spain have become increasingly popular in recent years. ''The USDA has banned the import of Spanish clementines. as well as their sale and distribution in all states where it thinks the Medfly will survive. This includes_ G~orgia and all surrounding states,'; said Co~ssioner Irvin. "The Medfly is one of the. world's most destructive agricultural pests," .said Irvin. ''It feeds dn more than 250 kinds of .fruits, nuts and vegetables. If the insect. became established here, it would be devastating and wquld .cost farmers and garden.ers millions of dollars annually.
