IRVIN,COM_MISSION-ER Vol., No~ 46 Wednesday November 14, 2001 Copyright 20.01 Irvin Urges Ag Chemical .Dealers, Users. To Take Extr~ security Precautions Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin is urging sellers and users .C?f agricultural chemicals and equipmel)t to take extra security measures to ensure that their products not fall-- into the wrong. hands. Irvin stated that his concerns include fa.CT.ners, structural pest control - operators, garden centers,' fertilizer dealers and all associated agricultural businesses. . "In the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11, our nation is on heightened . alert for acts of terrorism,'; Irvin said: . "Both President Bush and many experts outside his administration have indicated th.at other attacks.could come in the. form of chemical or biological weapons. Some of our fertilizers, pesticides and. equipment can be mi.sused to attack i)eopJe and plac~s. am such as in the attack in Oklahoma City. For this . re~son, I asking people and businesses dealing. with - agricultural ch~micals and equipment to establish security measures to prevent theft and unauthorized access 'to where these products are stored. I am urging farmers, pesticide applicators and agn-businesses to be diligent' i tracking product inventories and shipqientS and to take proper security measures at their farms. and facilities," Irvin said. Irvin made the following suggestions-to assist these operators with their security plans: . 1. Have a list of all emergency contacts and telephone numbers. 2. Train yotir personnel to know your products and what 'your customers will norm.ajly ask for and what they will use them for. (Continued on Page 12) Ga. My home haS a fireplace and I would like to by some firewood, but I'm not sure how much to order. In the past, I always ordered my firewood by the cord, but everyone here sells it. by pickup size. How much firewood would.I get if I ordered a half~ton pickup load or full-size. pickup load? The amount of firew-ood that can be loaded into the bed of a pickup truck varies and there is no-way to accurately- determine exa~tly how much wood it contains. A standar(J. pickup usually will hold only one-third to one-half of a full cord depending on how the (irewood is stacked iii the truck's bed. However, Georgia law requires that firewood be offered for sale and. sold only by measure, 'using the term "cord". Law defines a - cord, like other measurements such as a foot, a gallon, or a ton. A seller may not legitimately use terms such as ''truckload," "face cord," ''rack," or ''pile'; because these ' terms have no legally defined meaning. Beware of firewood sellers who claini . they. can deliver about - a cord of firewood in a half-ton pickup truck. A cord_of firewood must equal 128 cubic feet. To be sure yoli have a cord; stack tlie wood neatly by placing the wood in a line or row with individual pieces nlake touching and parallel to each_ other,' sure that the wood is compact and has as few gaps as possibJe. If the width times the height times the length of the pile does not equal 128 cubic feet, you do not have a cord of firewood. Contact the seller before you burn any of the . ' firewood and ask him to make up any shortages. Be sure to get a receipt, which shows the seller's name 'and address as well a8 the pric~, amount, and . kind of wood purchased. If possible, get the seller's telephone number and Writ~ doWn the license plate number of the delivery vehicle; If the seller cannot or will"not correct.the problem contact our Fuel and Measures office for help.
