I got rid of them by using an insecticide recommended for wasp control. What can I do to keep them from coming back? At monthly intervals check a nd retreat with the same insecticide product. Wasps will often use the areas under carports and eaves for their nests. I'm planning on going camping and hiking this weekend. What can 1 do to protect myself from tick bites? When you are going where ticks are likely to be, wear light colored clothes with your pimt I~ tucked into your socks. Fortunately, ticks uswilly have to be attached for 24 hours or longer lo transmit disease. Repellents help reduce the chance of getting a tick bile too. U's important lo target the feet, le~ and wabtUne when applying repellents. FoUow the label instructions closely. U a tick does bite, it is important to remove it properly. Gently grasp the tick as close to your skin as you can and pull It straight away lo a slow and steady motion. After you remove the tick, disinfect the bite site and thoroughly wash your hands- lfyou hllve problems or questions about products or services regulated by the Georgia Departmem ofAgriculture, wriJe: Consumer Services. Th~ are the toughest wreck., to work. In mo so tough for officials isn' I necessarily the homfic mess, bu1 the crowds of pai scrs- by who sec rree loot lying all over the road. lt is an odd pan of human nature, bul there nrc many people who will c,top their cars in the middle of traffic and get out and run all over the road trying to gather up as many free items as they can. In. pectors have even seen people slowing down with their car doors open leaning out trying to scoop up food as they drive by. One of the woJ"St cases of thi was when a truck overturned west of Atlanta carrying a load of beer kegs and case . People don' t seem to to give a second thought to what they are doing. No one should ever try to pick up any food product in a ituation like this and there are many reasons why. First of all. it' somebody cl!ie's property. S~ond, the food could be contammnted with fuel or other chemicals or poiled which could cau-;c -;cnou\ illnei once ii ic; taken home. Finally. of cour;c, there is the mk of being run over while running around trying to grnb i1cm:.. oblivious 10 wha1 is going on. Trucks carrying live animals can also be a cnous problem. e pccially with Georgia being the number one poultry producer in the country. However, accidents arcn' t selective 10 pouhry. many times there arc wrecks involving ca1tle. swine and other lives1ocl. In these situations. the Livestock/Poultry Section of the Department's Animal lndu try Divi ion i called in to as i t. The Equine HeaJth Sectfon would handle horse. and, believe ii or not. the Plan& fndus1ry's Plant Protection Division. which inspects the honeybee industry. hos been called on a few rare occasions to assi t with wrecks involving trucks carrying beehive . In 1he best-case cenario, none of the animals are harmed, till contained and can be reloaded and go on their way. Somecimes the animals are not hanned but get loose all over the highway. This can lead to the very dangerou job of trying to round the animals up before they are hit by troffic. Many A1lantans may remember the chaos a few years ago that resulted when a cattle truck wrecked on the downtown connector. While the outcome in this case was good and all the C31tle were collected and sent on to their destination, no1 all wrecks :.ee such a happy ending. Many limes the animals are maimed or killed. If the animals can be saved. the Livestock/Poultry in pector assi ts with gcuing the animal. to vc1erinary care. However. :.eriously maimed animals will have to be cuthanizcd. The inspector.. al'>o ha\'e the tough LaSl of ru '>istiog with the d1!.po al of the animal that are killed in these tragic accidcnh. Wht!ther it is a commu1cr~ nightmare. a looter's wildest dream. or a cow'-, dream of freedom come true. with o many troc1or-lr.i.ilers on the road. the e accidents are bound to happen. While it is only a small part of the Coru umer Protection and Animal Industry Divi ions' many dutie they help keep the roadways clear and Georgia's food supply safe.
