Chaste tree is fac:l-growing when young, is easy to care for. and it provides beauliful nowers after most other trees and shrubs have quit for the year. The trees are easy to establi h as container plants. too. To get them off to a fast stan, plant them early in spring before the leaves stnrt lo emerge. When planting. choose a site that's well-drained and in full sun. Chaste trees like the sun and heat. and they will tolerate drought. too. o nce they arc estubli-:hed. In addition. they are nearly pest free. A chaste tree will be comfortable a. a ing le pecimen standing a lone in a prominent spot. You also can use it as a small tree in a patio or t.ul'T'Ounded by a low deck. Chastetree alc;o works well ac: a ~idcwal k plantfog or under utility wires. It doc well in the back of a shrub border for a background or screen. When space i. available. you can p lant a mini-grove of three to five ll'CeS. The plant leafs oul in the spring with fresh. gray-green. compound leaves. The leaves arc nicely aromatic when you crush them. New growth rapidly expands and will soon support the terminal spikes of nowers. Lasting about four weeks. nowcrs are typically lavender to blue, but there arc pink and white nowering forms. also. f you remove the fading nower spikes and new seed heads, the plant will produce a new crop o f terminal n owers in early fall. New plantings grow fast for the first three to four years, but you need to prune them to guide the branch development. Trees planted along sidewalks and over patios will need to be pruned up to keep the lower branches out of the way. To get the trees off to a good start each year, apply fertili zer in the spring and make sure they get water when the weather's dry. You'll be rewarded with many large flower spikes, 12 - 18 inches tall. Chaste trees become more rounded over time. so plan for a Huie room when you plant as they can reach 15 - 20 feet ta ll when mat.ure. Most trees will develop multiple trunks with dark gray, blocky bark. These rrccs do not need much special care. but you will need to prune them in late February. Remove lower branches t.o expose the trunks. and take out any cro~ ing brunches and prune for shape. Also. remember to fenilize in spring and water as needed. Chaste trees arc tough. 11howy little trees. Since established chru;te trees are drought-tolerant and virtually pest-free, they will fit comfortably in your landscape. parks or street plantings. lnformutio11 for Jliis article was provided by Dr. James Midcap, Extension Service ltor1ic11/111ris1.
