Morris succeeds Joe - Bqddiford, a peanut farmer from Sylvania, Ga. Morris served as chairman of the board I>reviously in -1996-97. "I -look forward to serving Georgia peanut growers as chrurman," Morris said: "I appreciate the confidence of the board. I hope the peanut- growers will ha_ve a: good production year even though it looks_ bleak now." Other offiCers elected during the board -meeting include Joe Boddiford, Sylvania, Ga., as vice chairman and . Wilbur Gamble, Dawson, Ga., as treasurer. During the board meeting; Superior Court Judge J. Harvey Davis administered_ the oath of office to Rodney Dawson, Hawkinsville, Ga., Gamble and Morris. Recently, pe_anut growers elected all three board members to serve three-year terms. - Dawson repres-ents District 4 and succeeds Billy Griggs, Unadilla; .Gl}., . who did not seek re-election. Gamble represents District - 5 _ and Morris represents District 2. Jiminy Cheney, board member from Edison, _Ga., represents District 1. -Labor Dept. Surveying Blueberry, Pe~ch G~owers -The Georgia Department of Labor will _be conducting -wage and practice surveys in -late. May and- early June for blueberry and peach harvesting. All information is confidential, used only inthe aggregate and- is not identifiable by individual grower. Labor Department employees will conduct short interviews concerning cultivatio_n -pra~tices and review routinely maintained records. - The surveys are voluntary, but the Labor Department urges growers to participate. Due to_ fabor shortages in agriculture, growers are turning more and more frequently fo the H-2A Program to bring in guest workers from other countries to harvest fresh market crops and meet other short-term Ia:bor needs. The H~2A Program requires growers to pay prevailing wages, as determined through these surveys. In order to meet growing labor needs, growers inay find it necessary to utilize th~s program, and profitability, or lackthereof, could be greatly influenced by this survey.
