Vi~it Our Website ---,, IVIARKET BULLETIN GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRV~N,COMMISSIONER Wednesday April 25, 2001 _ -copyright 2001 Vidalia Onlons Late, Sniall, in Short Supply Cold, unstable weather through December and-January has taken a toll on the.staie's valuable Vidalia onion crop, according to experts who say the crop_ will be late, possibly_ smaller than normal and in short supply. "Because the weather was so rough in December, the oriions didn't really grow until mid-January," said Reid Torrance, Tattnall County Extension Ser:vice coordinator with the University of Georgia .College of Agricultural andEnvironmental Sciences. . "It has the crop behind," Torrance said. "We won't be in full swing of harvest until the first week of May. So,. we're hoping we have good weather for the next few weeks to size the bulbs up. We're still optimistic that we'll have a .good crop.'But it's going t.0 be short:" According to statistics from the Georgia Department of Agriculture, . Vidalia onion growers planted 14,387 acres of this year's crop. That's down a little more than 1,000 acres from last year. "Yields off those acres usually average 200 hundredw.eight per acre," Torrance said. "Last year it was 255 hundredweight- per acre - a 25 percent increase over our long-term average, and the biggest crop we've ever made. We will be off anywhere from one-third to half of that (record) yield this year." On the heels of .last y~ar's bumper crop of onions, the news isn't all bad for onion marketers. A short market us:ually equals higher prices: Fewer acres coupled with at least a 15- to 20~percent loss in yields should make for a favorable Vidalia onion market. "My guess is we will be 30 percent off what we shipped la_st year at ttie best," Torrance said. -"And it could be closer to 50 percent off. Froni here on out, it will all depend on the weather." Vidalia onions require even temperatures and good soil moisture to grow; "We need the good stable .temperatures like we recently received," Torrance said. "We've been riding this roller coaster of up~and-down temperatures. Onions don'.t grow when it's jacket.weather." It's those temperature swings that delayed the .crop. It takes even, w.arm temperatures to promote bulbing in onions. "If it gets too hot, the tops will fall over and the bulb stops growing," _Torrance said. "If that happens, we'll.get a lot of medium onions and few jumbos. We need some help from Mo'ther Nature with some rain to keep the tops stiff, too. (Continued on fage 12) USDA Revises Ga. Hay Yields .Chicken Wing Prices For Calculating NAP P_ayments Reach New H~ight The U.S. Department of Agricwture has , notified the Georgia Farm Service Agency . that the 1999 Noninsured Crop -Disaster Assistance Progrim (NAP) yields have been modified to better reflect actual hay losses for Georgia farmers. 'VSDA originally used a yield of 2.6 tons/acre, which was derived from National .Agricultural Statistics Service data based on 'er that this has been the worst drought in Georgia's history. The rrunfall has b,een helpful, but we cannot say it has erased the impact of the past three years of drought." . While some 'areas of the state have reported flooding from-recent heary rains, during a drought, the effect from that rain can be short-lived. According to state climatologist Dr. David Stooksbury, according to the .U.S. Ai-my Corps of Engineers, lake levels at most of the federal reservoirs are good, however, the uncertainty of the forecasts dictates conservative water usage. . Lake Lanier, which is the primary source of water for metro Atlanta, remains low, nearly nine_ feet below full pool, and Lake Hartwell is six feet below full pool. -For more information about water restrictions in your area, contact your water utility service or your local Cooperative Extension Service. . Many fast food restaurants as well. as grocery store chains' rely on the Georgia market for the pricing .of products. Georgia's market also serves as a "guide" in the pricing of products for export. . The .service, which is a unit of the department's Animal Industry Division, provides poultry market prices and information to news media outlets and market sources through mailings, radio and television reports, and electronic transmission of data. Established in 1965, the service wail the first of its kind in. the nation, and it has served as ,a model_ for other states in establishing their own services. .hydrologic drought, which is decreased . groundwater. and surface w,ater levels, can . persist everi after heavy rainfall. Many communities and private well owners throughout Georgia rely on groundwater for their "drinking water. In addition, the forecast calls for lower than normal rainfall this spring, . particularly . in the southern. half of Georgia. And, by the end of April, evaporation eliniinates much of tpe rainfall before it can reach the deeper soils and groundwater.
