Pastures Tropical Soda Apple (TSA) is a federal and state noxious weed originally native to South America which has become a serioll.s weed problem in pastures and native areas in Florida and has been found in Several other states, inducting Georgia. Whil_e TSA foliage is unpalatable to cattle and other livestock, the fruit at maturity is very desirable to livestock and wildlife such as feral hogs and deer. The tomato-like fruit can produce 40,000 to 50,000 seeds per plant, with approximately 75% seed viability, so there is plenty of seed av3.ilable - for dispersal. Once consumed, the seeds pass through the animal's system without . any. harm and are deposited in new areas . when the aninlaI is moved. TSA can infest ooth pastures and. native areas in one to two ' years and can result in lower stocking rates (filrimals per acre). Tropical Soda Apple first appeared in Georgia between 1994 and 1995 and has. been linked to cattle moving from. TSAinfested areas in Florida So far, TSA has been found in 23 loca~ons in South Georgia . (Continued on Page 12) Are there any flowers that will bloom outdoors in the winter?.. Yes. J'ry planting pansies and violas in the-fall for wintertime blooms. Also consider such perennials as Algerian iris and variou8 hellebores, espetjally the bearsfoot hellebore. For more winter blooms look at shrubs arid trees such as witch hazels, Prun'us mume, winter-sweet, winter jasmine, leather-leaf mahonia, camellias, winier-flowering cherry, and winter honeysuckle (Lonicera fragrantissima). Wmter. honeysuckle is a shrub that also is called ''sweet-breath-of-spring'' even though it begins blooming in the middle of winter. For even more winter color, consider plants that bear berries or fruits or have colorful bark or foliage. V.ISit you*r*l*ocal nursery fo.r more information.
