Anyone using the term "Vidalia" in connection with or on onions must first register with the Commissioner of Agriculture. According to the Rules of the "Vidalia Onion Act of 1986", handling requirements specify that all Vidalia onions be initially packed only in the Vidalia Onion Production Area and that no Vidalia onions may be shipped from that area in bulk except as may be authorized by the rules. All Vidalia onions offered for sale also must meet specific grade and size requirements. Wednesday February 2, 2000 Pesticide Temporarily Cleared For Use in Georgia Beehives Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin announced last week that beekeepers in Georgia have been temporarily cleared to use the pesticide Coumaphos impregnated in plastic strips in their hives to control Varroa mite and small hive beetle. The temporary clearance comes as a result of Commissioner Irvin's appeal to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for an emergency exemption for Georgia's beekeepers. One important restriction for Coumaphos-treated hives is that honey from these hives will have to be removed from the comb before it is sold. For information and restrictions on using Coumophos, beekeepers shouW contact Doug Jones (telephone: 404-656-4958) or Mike Evans (404-651-9486) at the Georgia Department of Agriculture. "Varroa mites and small hive beetles are causing our honeybee population to dwindle," said Irvin. "These pests have had a serious detrimental effect on commercial beekeeping in Georgia and the pollination services it provides the state's fruit and vegetable growers. Honeybees play an important role in pollinating many fruits and vegetables and are responsible for pollinating plants that account for approximately one-third of the food we eat." Copyright 2000 Funding, Technical Assistance Provided for Small Farmers The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently announced two new steps to help small farmers and ranchers find better ways to market and export their products. "There is no higher priority for USDA than working to ensure the longterm survival and economic well-being of America'.s small- and medium-size family farms," Secretary of Agriculture Glickman said. "Expanded export opportunities and improved marketing offer tremendous opportunities to boost small farm incomes during this time of depressed prices." . Glickman announced that USDA will provide $500 ,000 to help small farmers develop new ways to market their products, including direct selling to s~ Pick~ Your-Own Edition Set for Feb. 23 The Market Bulletin will publish its special Pick-Your-Own Listing for Strawberries on Feb. 23. If you would like your farm listed in this section, please send your notice to our office by Feb. 9. Your notice should include your name, county, address, approximate availability, telephone number and area code, and any comments on your operation. Any additional information provided may be edited due to space limitations. restaurants and institutions, agri-tourism and pick-your-own farms. Under USDA's Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program, the University of Vermont, University of Nebraska, University of Georgia, and Utah State University will select and assist specific new marketing projects that will benefit smaller farms. In addition, USDA will offer technical assistance to help small farmers and ranchers form cooperatives to export crops and livestock to international markets. Loans are .available to help fina.nce the development of value-added processing at existing cooperatives. _>_:::::::::: :.. USDA Announces $125 Million In Aid to Dairy Farmers U.S. Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman recently announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture is providing $125 million in direct cash payments to assist dairy farmers who have been hurt by low prices: An additional $200 million in aid was distributed last summer. "Dairy farmers are being squeezed by market conditions that don't allow them a fair price for their product," said Glickman. "This assistance is sorely needed to help keep many small- and medium-size dairy producers in business until prices stabilize." To distribute limited resources equitably among all dairy producers, the Dairy Market Loss Assistance program provides payments based on an operation's milk production in 1997 or 1998, up to the first 26 ,000 hundredweight of production. All dairy farmers who produced milk during the last quarter of calendar year 1998 are eligible for the program. Eligible dairy farmers who did not participate in the program last summer must sign up at their local Farm Service Agency offices or USDA Service Centers from January 24 by February 28, 2000. Farmers who participated in last summer's program will automatically receive payments and do not need to reapply for assistance. The dollar amount of payments will be calculated after sign-up is complete.
