No. 46 ~ie!~ Group Promotes Ga.-Grown Trees About 1950, a few courageous Georgians started experimenting with Christmas tree production, and the idea caught on throughout the state. New species of trees were introduced and the industry grew steadily until the mid-1980's when a national oversupply of trees developed, reducing profits. Problems developed with the species grown at the time. Around 1990, the Leyland Cypress and other new varieties were introduced. Our guest columnist this week is Bill Murray, president-elect, Georgia Christmas Tree Association, P.O. Box 274, Concord, GA 30206. As the oversupply eased and production cost was. reduced due to the new varieties, Christmas tree production became a viable crop again in Georgia. At this time, the number of growers is low compared to the market opportunity. There is now a need for more Christmas tree farms to provide trees for a growing number of consumers who prefer to "choose and cut" their own. The Leyland Cypress is an outstanding Christmas tree for it holds up well and does not shed needles as most varieties do. There are other varieties of Leyland Cypress and other members of the cypress family that grow well in Georgia and make good Christmas trees. Choose and cut Christmas trees offer families in Georgia a wonderful holiday tradition and a good enterprise for growers. As the days in Georgia get shorter and shorter, Christmas draws nearer and nearer, so it's getting close to the time to pick out that special Christmas tree for your family to enjoy during the holiday season. The Georgia Christmas Tree Association offers a few suggestions on the selection, care and recycling of fresh Christmas trees to make choosing that special tree more fun and the best value for your money. When picking out a fresh tree, keep these suggestions in mind: * determine where in your home you will display your tree so that you will be able to tell what size and shape you need. * do a freshness test. Hold a branch about six inches from the tip. Pull your hand toward the tip, allowing the branch to slip through your fingers. Very few green needles s4,ould come off in your hand if the tree is fresh. * another freshness test: lift the tree a couple of inches off the ground, then bring it down abruptly on the stump end. Outside, green needles should not fall off in substantial numbers. Remember, inside needles do turn brown and shed naturally every year. Farm Families Invited * a good fragrance and green color also indicate freshness. In caring for a fresh tree, remember these tips: * the most important thing to remember is that real trees need water - just like a fresh bouquet of flowers. * make a fresh cut across the base of the trunk, 1/4" up from the original cut. When a tree is first cut, a seal of sap occurs naturally over its stump which keeps moisture in the tree. It's important to break that seal to allow the tree to take up the water needed to keep it fresh throughout the holidays. Christmas Tree Choose and Cut List See Pages 6-9 * until you are ready to decorate, keep your tree outdoors, standing in a bucket of water and protected from the wind and sun. This will help the tree retain its moisture. * keep plenty of water in your stand. A Christmas tree may absorb a gallon of water. in the first 24 hours it's up and between two pints to a gallon of water a day thereafter. Check the stand daily and supply fresh water as needed. Never let your tree stand go dry. If the water supply runs out, a seal will form on the cut surface of the tree trunk and a Notice of Equine Auction Pursuant to Section 4-13-7 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated (Humane Care for Equines Act), the Georgia Department ofAgriculture will receive sealed bids on the following equine as grade horses, to wit: 20 year old sorrel QH gelding The said equine may be inspected at the Equine Critical Care Facility in Decatur, Georgia from 12 noon-6 p.m. Friday, November 17, 2000 and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, November 18, 2000. For directions tolocation, call (404) 6563713. Sealed bids only will be received on the equine. Don't forget to unplug the lights when you go to bed or leave home. In recycling your tree, the following Market Bulletin Plans Special People Edition suggestions are made: * place your tree in a garden or backyard for use as a winter birdfeeder During the Christmas holiday season, many elderly or shut-in people no longer have family members or friends that can visit them or send them cards and letters. Each year the Market'Bulletin publishes a list of these "special people" who would enjoy receiving cards and letters during the holidays. The Special People list for 2000 will be published in the Market Bulletin Dec. 6. Deadline for submitting names is Nov. 22. .
