IRVIN, COMMISSIONER Vol..~=jNo. 44 Ceorgian Named SE Farmer of Year James Lee Adams of Camilla, Ga., has been chosen as the Lancaster/Sunbelt Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year for the year 2000. The announcement was made recently at the Willie B. Withers EXhibitor Luncheon on the opening day of the Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition in Moultrie, Ga. Swisher Intemational's Lancaster Premium Chewing Tobacco, along with Sunbelt Expo, have sponsored the award for 11 years. "Mr. Adams is representative of the modem farmer who takes advantage of modem technology, utilizes products that would be considered waste in many business ventures, and believes in promoting agriculture to the general public and in working with both national and foreign governments to market and promote agricultural products," said J. Thomas Ryan, executive vice president of Swisher International, who made the announcement. "He is to be commended, as are all of the winners who represent what is outstanding in America today." Adams was chosen for the honor from finalists who represented eight Southeastern states. He was selected for the Southeastern honor by a group of judges who visited each of the state winners in August. Adams received a check for $12,500 from Swisher International, a year's supply of clothing from the Williamson-Dickie Company, the use of a Massey-Ferguson 4200 series tractor for a year from AGCO, a $1,000 gift certificate from Southern States Cooperative, and a custom-made gun safe from Misty Mom Safes. Additionally, he and each of the state winners received a check for $1,500 from Swisher International and a $500 gift certificate from Southern States. "We are proud to honor James Lee Adams as the 11th Lancaster/Sunbelt Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year," said Chip Blalock, director of the Sunbelt Expo. Wednesday NovembeI 1, 2000 Copyright 2000 Cookbook Offered For Holiday Season The Georgia Department of Agriculture is again offering its 'Best of Georgia Farms' cookbook to Market Bulletin readers, but this edition features the book in a new full size paperback format with special "lay flat" binding. Department of Agriculture Protects Georgia_ Firewood Sellers, Consumers As cool weather approaches, thoughts tum to leisurely winter evenings spent in front of a nice blazing fire. Georgians interested in buying wood for those fires are reminded that the Georgia Department of Agriculture regulates firewood sales within the state. Uniform standards benefit consumers as well as vendors by ensuring consistency, equity and good will in the marketplace. Wood of any type, when advertised as fuel for fireplaces or stoves, .must be designated by the cord, or fraction of a cord, according to regulations administered by the Department's Weights and Measures Division. A cord is defined as 128 cubic feet of wood, stacked in a line or row, with individual pieces touching and stacked in a compact manner. The cord is usually stacked four feet high, four feet wide and eight feet long, but may be any combination of measurements that converts to 128 cubic feet. There are no defined measurements for such terms as f~ce cord, rack, pile or: truckload, which is why these terms are prohibited when advertising or offering wood for sale. With fireplaces a common feature in urban as well as rural homes, many supermarkets and convenience stores now offer firewood for sale in quantities much smaller than a cord. The Department also. regulates these sales and requires firewood to be bundled by cubic measure, or by weight and count. The measurements are require!! to be (Continued on Page 11) Equine Industry Input Sought For Federal EVA Program Proposals ''This publication is mQre than a great collection of Market Bulletin recipes," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "It includes beautiful artwork, historical information and interesting facts and stories about some of the people who have had, and continue to have, a positive influence on Georgia agriculture." . For instance, in addition to the more than 200 Market Bulletin recipes carefully selected and tested by the Department of Agriculture test kitchen, the book features sidebars with food history, nutritional information and buying tips. The authors, Fred Brown and Sherri M. L. Smith, also have put together 28 ''tours" into the state's back roads that provide a unique guide to (Continued on Page 12) Interested persons have until November 20, 2000, to provide input on the U.S. Department of Agriculture's proposed programs for Equine Viral Arteritis (EVA), a highly contagious, but not widespread, respiratory disease of equine in the U.S. Cw:rently, there are no federal programs to control EVA. After an incubation period of about a week, the disease can cause infected equine to run a fever, lose their appetite,. and develop conjunctivitis (swollen, red eyes) and nasal discharge. In many, instances though, there are no signs of illness. Affected geldings, mares or sexually immature stallions will usually eliminate the virus and develop a strong immunity against the disease. Stallions, on the other hand, can harbor the disease in their reproductive system as long as 15 years and shed the virus at non-determined intervals. When stallions are "shedders," they can infect mares during breeding. A high percentage of infected pregnant mares will abort or deliver foals that do not survive. In addition to health implications, EVA also has economic repercussions. Abortions, foal deaths, and lost breeding seasons resulting from this disease can substantially impact the equine industry. The five possible programs, all of which include disease education and range from voluntary to highly restrictive, are: 1. A minimal voluntary program: * No USDA regulatory involvement. * Focus on disease education. * Equine industry to determine method to identify infected stallions (and Market Bulletin Plans Special People Edition semen). 2. Voluntary control program: * Equine industry to manage and During the Christmas holiday season, many elderly or shut-in people no longer have family members or friends that can visit them or send them cards and letters. Each year the:; Market Bulletin publishes a list of these "special people" who would enjoy receiving cards and letters during the holidays. The Special People list for .2000 will be published in the Market Bulletin Dec. 6. Deadline for submitting names is Nov. 22. If you know of an elderly or shut-in reader who would like to be included, please secure his or her permission and include a statement to this effect with the person's signature before submitting the information to the Market Bulletin. Requests submitted without this information will not be published. Please submit the name and address for one person only. Only Georgia residents will he included on the list, and we will not publish any entries that do not meet the above requirements. Only one Special People list will be published for 2000.
