Copyright 2000 Dry Weather Plays Key Role in Georgia Weather as usual played a key role in 1999's crop summary for Georgia. A dry spring and summer drought reduced the production of some field crops in 1999, according to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. Weather conditions during the spring caused planting delays and poor seed germination, while the summer experienced above normal temperatures and well below-normal rainfall. These conditions continued throughout the growing season with only brief periods of relief. The dry weather continued into the fall-, which was beneficial for harvesting. Cotton suffered due to the dry weather, but not as much as soybeans. Considering the dry summer, which affected most of the cotton growing area, yields were better than earlier thought. Yield per harvested acre is now expected on average 580 pounds, up 67 pounds per acre from the previous estimate, and only 2 pounds per acre more than last year. By the end of the first week of December 1999, about 90 percent of the crop had been harvested. Final harvested acreage is anticipated at 1,300,000 acres, down 150 ,000 acres from earlier estimates, but 20,000 acres more than what was . harvested in 1998. If this harvested acreage projection holds true, 170,000 of the 1,470 ,000 acres planted will be abandoned. Planted and harvested (Continued on Page 12) ag consumer line My termite contract has a damage or repair clause that my pest control company is refusing to honor. There is not a question that the damage was caused by termites, but there were no termites present when the damage was discovered. What should I do? Read your contract very carefully. Repair or damage contracts issued by some companies guarantee the purchaser that the pest company will repair any damage or infestation that occurs after the original termite treatment. . However, some of these contracts require that an active infestation be found in the damaged area to activate the damage repair clause.
