We keep mowing it, but it keeps coming back. In some areas, it is impossible to mow. an Although you may feel that is lost because this bamboo is so invasive, it can be controlled. Spray the leaves of this pesky plant with Roundup (the brand name for the chemical glyphosate). For best results the spray should be applied when the plant is in full flower (late August). This will kill most of the plants. Repeated applications will be necessary for a total kill. Be sure to read and follow all label directions on this or any other pesticide product before you use it. What can I do to get rid of chipmunk*s*?* They are ruining my garden and yard by digging holes everywhere. Chipmunks spend much of their time in later summer and fall gathering and storing food. They will dig seeds from your garden, feed on flower bulbs and burrow into lawns, especially near dry rock walls. Although chipmunks are protected, they may be trapped when they cause property damage. Live trapping with small commercial or homemade box traps can reduce their numbers. Once trapped they should be released at least a mile from the capture area. Baits attractive to chipmunks include peanut butter, nut meats, sunflower seeds, and rolled oats. Place your trap in areas where chipmunks travel or feed. That's not what you want when your main goal for your plants is survival, according to the University of Georgia Extension Service. You may need to do some selective pruning, though, when a plant wilts and begins showing leaf scorch, and branches start dying. Beginning in August these colorful songbirds, the largest swallows in North America, will begin their migration through the state en route to wintering grounds as far away as Argentina. Purple martins are not purple, as their name suggests, but blackish with metallic purple highlights. Males are dark all over, while females and young birds are gray on the stomach and under the tail. Due to habitat loss, the eastern population of purple martins has become almost completely dependent on humans for nesting houses. Adopting the practice of Native Americans, many people hang gourds for use by martins as well as erect large houses with up to 100 rooms on platforms over 15 feet high. Martins will settle in both rural and urban areas and once established, will return year afte; year to the same roosting habitat. Prime roosting areas are river bottoms, marshes and meadows near large bodies of water. Like other neo-tropical songbirds, purple martins migrate to areas in the southern hemisphere to spend their winters. Prior to migration, they gather in large communal nests of more than 100,000 birds. .In . 1996, Clemson University scientists, using radar developed for weather monitoring, were able to "see" a plume of movement in a purple martin roosting area on Lake Murray near Columbia, South Carolina. Over 700 ,000 birds_ are estim_ated to use this roosting area m preparation for their fall migration to South America. Interestingly, these ornithologists also discovered a smaller plume of birds on Lake Hartwell near A~gusta and other sites in Georgia, using this ~ame radar. Radar technology is provmg to be extremely useful in identifying key concentration areas for not only purple martins, but also other neo-tropical migrants that breed in North America and migrate to winter grounds in South and Central America, the West Indies and Mexico. "With habitat loss being the number one threat to Georgia's songbirds, we hope that new technology such as radar will enable us to better track our songbirds and monitor their migration routes," said Terry Johnson,. program m~a?er of the Nongame-Endangered Wildlife Program, a unit of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Resources Division. There is no charge to attend. The Showcase is designed for students who have an interest in pursuing a college education involving agriculture and related subjects. "This is a great opportunity for students to look at programs from ABAC, Fort Valley State, and the University of Georgia," ABAC Public Relations Director Mike Chason said. "All three of these educational institutions will have Watermelon Convention (Continued from Page 1) NWPB staff to execute its programs. The Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Service monitors the board's operations. All directors are required to attend two meetings each year to become familiar with and develop the board's programs. About 2,200 commercial producers, handlers and importers make up the membership of the NWPB and finance all of the board's programs through assessments on watermelons as authorized by the Congressional Watermelon Research and Promotion Act. The 33-member board currently is ~omprised of 14 producers, 14 handlers, 3 importers, an ex-officio member and a member who represents the public. The NWPB will allow proxy voting for board nominees. Individuals wishing to vote by proxy should prepare signed, dated, sta~ements, including the proxy voters pnnted name, address, identity as a producer or handler, and the name of the individual authorized to cast the proxy vote. Statements should be submitted to the board by the individual authorized to cast the proxy vote no later than August 25,2000. A?ditional information regarding the elections _and nomination procedures may be obtamed by contacting NWPB Executive Director William Watson tollfree at (877) 599-9595. Unfortunately, these symptoms usually are not evident until long after the attacks have begun and significant tree damage has occurred. The presence of "pitch tubes" on the bark of trees is one of the best ways to identify bark beetle attack. Healthy trees respond to beetle attacks by exuding large amounts of pitch or sap from the beetle entrance holes. The pitch then hardens on the bark surface to form pitch or resin tubes. Use a good pair of binoculars to observe the middle and upper. trunk and ti;ie base of large limbs for pitch tubes, smce the initial attack of some bark beetles occurs at mid-trunk height or above. Pitch tubes inay not form on stressed trees; instead, attacks are indicated by the presence of brown boring dust. Many people also notice white, sawdust-like boring dust at the base of trees. Ambrosia beetles, which attack the tree after the bark beetles have colonized and ~eakened it, produce this dust. By the time the crown changes color; most of the bark beetles have completed their life cycle and emerged from the tree. Beetle presence also is indicated by egg gallenes that have been excavated into the surface wood under the bark. If bark beetles appear to be present, you will need to identify the type that are causing the problem by removing a portion of the bark and examining the adult beetles and/or gallery patterns present. Timber owners/managers and homeowners should take the following steps to reduce the likelihood of bark bee.tie infestations: . Encourage vigorous tree growth. Susceptibility to beetle attack increases with tree age and slow diameter growth. Shorten pine rotations in areas where beetles have historically caused considerable timber losses. If bark beetles are active in your area, delay harvest and thinning operations or severe pruning until winter when beetle activity has declined. . Remove storm- or lightni~g-damaged pme trees as quickly as possible. Damaged pines are ideal sites for the start of bark beetle infestations. Minimize mechanical tree damage such as skinning of the trunks, partial pushovers, etc. during construction or harvesting operations. Trees damaged from recent logging activities are inviting for all kinds of bark beetles. Remove and salvage skinned trees (Continued on Pagell) Next Handicraft Edition Scheduled for Sept. 20 The next handicraft edition for the Market Bulletin is scheduled for Sept. 20.
