But what amazed me the most about my recent. trade mission were the agricultural advancements in nearly every aspect of production. I saw cotton, corn, soybeans, wheat, tobacco and vegetables very similar to what you can see in a farming operation in Georgia today. Although the tractors and other farm implements were not as modern as ours, they were useful and served their purpose. Yet with all of the advances I witnessed in agriculture, I confirmed what I already knew- that there is a place for American farm products in the homes and on the tables of the Chinese. There are tremendous trade opportunities for our farmers in the years ahead with China. With 1.3 billion people to feed and clothe, the future is bright green for Chinese and Americans. We must not only visualize, but act upon this chance to be a part of this huge country's move into the 21st Century. All of my appointments and meetings on this recent trade mission were arranged by the United States Foreign Agricultural Service which enabled me to meet and dialogue with top Chinese agricultural officials and entrepreneurs, all of whom were receptive and appreciative of our visit and possible future business transactions. I foresee American farmers having an opportunity in the very near future to sell many products to China. I plan on leading the way for Georgia farmers to sell everything from seed stock, including varieties of grasses such as Tiffiagle and TifSport, to semen to upgrade their livestock and dairy herds. We are the leading poultry producers in the world, and chicken is the meat of choice in (Continued on Page 12) Wednesday July 12, 2000 Copyright 2000 'P~Yawt-OWlt Georgia Ag Commissioner Farms Provide Fresh Produce Although fresh produce is available at state farmers' markets, roadside stands, grocery stores and supermarkets, some people still enjoy picking their own fruits and vegetables in Georgia, as. shown by the Market Bulletin's Special pick-yourown listing on pages 6-7. If your family is planning to take a trip to a pick-yourown produce farm, consider the following guidelines to ensure you get the most from your visit. Consider the travel distance to the farm. Since you must supply your own labor for picking, it might not be worth traveling a great distance, even if the prices are lower than retail. If the trip is planned more as a family outing, then distance may not be important to you. Evaluate prices of the crops you want to harvest If the prices are not indicated in aN advertisement or listing, then call to ask about price and availability before making a trip to the farm. Customers arriving at the site should note and obey all rules and regulations posted by the owners. Although the farm owners have several advantages in allowing customers to pick their own fruits and vegetables, they also take the risk that their crops may be damaged by unconcerned, careless or inexperienc~d consumers. Some farms have rules concerning the use of containers. Although a few (Continued on Page 12) Proposes Trade With Cuba Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin recently proposed to establish agricultural trade relations with Cuba at the annual Southern Association of State Departments of Agriculture's conference held in Louisville, Kentucky. Irvin's proposal, which was overwhelmingly passed at the conference and subsequently sent to the U.S. State Department for consideration, corresponds with legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate called the FoOd and Medicine for the World Act. Irvin plans to head up a delegation for agriculturists to Cuba in the not-toodistant future. . "Our chicken is being diverted by Canada and sent down to Cuba already," he said. "It's not good sense to let that continue." He also said that Georgia could benefit from importing some of Cuba's agricultural products during the state's off-season. Irvin, who lobbied for the passage of permanent normal trade relations with China, said that during the Cold War he had been the first state agricultural comm1ss10ner to propose trading agricultural products with the then- Soviet Union and had encountered some hostility to his ideas. Now, however, "attitudes about selling to Communist , .. countries have softened," he said. .. :~a~~it~~~~. Jy.;.l:.> '..'.>>'.'f .:.:. 'l.>:ll:l.~:flJiX;=~~-~-~~/=:/: ::~:~::. ,: .~ .:. My neighbor's tree is only three years old and is flowering. What can I do to get my tree to flower? All magnolia trees have the potential of producing flowers. However, some trees begin flowering at an earlier age than others. This characteristic is quite noticeable when large numbers of magnolia trees are grown in a nursery. A few plants will begin flowering when they are only three or four years old; many others do not begin their flowering cycle until they are six to eight years old or even older. There is no practical way to stimulate early flowering: However, there are named varieties that begin blooming earlier than on-named magnolias. *** My grandfather left his poultry farm to my wife and me. We plan to operate the farm but make some major improvements. Where can I get information on dead chicken composting? Dead chicken or poultry mortality composting is being used on a number of Georgia poultry farms instead of deep pits and incineration. But before you undertake any major operational changes on your farm, contact your local Extension agent. Also, contact our Animal Industry Division to obtain information on acquiring a poultry mortality-composting permit.
