THE MARKET BULLETIN Volunteers Needed Statewide For Free Well-Water Testing Emmie Westberry of Hoboken, Ga., and her great-granddaughter, Timberly Cox, 17 months old, are shown with the 50-pound, 52-inch pumpkin that Mrs. Westberry grew in her garden. May Garden Chores Inspect azaleas for insects this month. If the foliage is yellow, it may indicate the presence of lace bugs or spider mites, which can be found on the underside of the leaves. If you see black deposits or small insects about one-eighth inch long with lacy wings, lace bugs are present on the azaleas. Spider mites are too small to be seen, but webbing on the undersides of leaves indicates their presence. When choosing a pesticide, look for one _approved for use on these pests and follow label directions. After azaleas finish flowering, they will experience a growth spurt, thus making it an ideal time to fertilize. If the soil is alkaline, apply an acid-forming fertilizer made especially for azaleas and camellias. If the soil is not too alkaline, you can use any balanced fertilizer formulation, such as 12-6-6. Apply about one-quarter cup per square yard of bed and water the plants well after application. If azalea foliage appears yellow after fertilizing, it is an indication that the plants may need iron. Sometimes the soil is lacking in iron, but often the soil simply is too alkaline for the plant roots to absorb the iron that is present. This problem can be corrected by lowering the pH of the soil with iron sulfate. Spraying the foliage with iron chelate also will help, but the results will be only temporary. The Georgia Geologic Survey has begun a statewide groundwater quality survey in cooperation with the Georgia Department of Agriculture. The Survey is currently sampling private wells in Southwest Georgia. Homeowners residing in all counties except the coastal counties of Effingham, Chatham, Bryan, Liberty, Mcintosh, Glynn, Camden, Brantley, Charlton, Ware, Clinch, Echols and Lanier, which draw drinking water from a confined aquifer, are eligible to have their drinking-water tested free of charge. Samples will be collected from shallow domestic drinking water wells and analyzed for the commonly used pesticides alachlor, atrazine, metolachlor, and simazine. There has been little evidence suggesting that the normal application and use of these pesticides is harmful to ground water in Georgia, and the testing is expected to confirm this. In the. case of any detection of pesticides, the Geologic Survey will revisit and resample the well to confirm the analysis. The UGA Deep South Poultry Conference May 17 Georgia farmers are the nation's top poultry producers with yearly broiler and egg crops valued at nearly $2.8 billion. With that much at stake, poultry producers should be interested in the wealth of information being offered at the Deep South Poultry Conference May 17 in Tifton, Ga. The program will open with a 7:30 a.m. registration at the Rural Development Center off I-75 (Exit64). In the opening sessions, university and industry experts will address topics from nutrient management plans to protecting poultry houses and equipment from lightning. After the morning break, the program will be divided into separate sessions for breeders and broilers. The sessions will end at 3:20 p.m. For more information, call Keith Bramwell at (912) 386-3418. Cooperative Extension Service has agreed to conduct an on-site environmental assessment, if requested by a well owner. The well owner will receive notification of the results of the analysis within thirty days of sample collection. Water samples will be collected during daytime hours, Monday through Friday. The test requires a Geologic Survey representative to have access to an outside spigot, run the water for approximately 15-20 minutes, and collect a water sample. It is not necessary for the well owner to be present for the sampling event. Only a limited number of wells can be sampled, approximately 40 per county. Interested well owners should mail a written request .for water analysis to: Free Well-Water Testing for Pesticides, Georgia Geologic Survey, 19 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, Room 400, Atlanta, GA 30334. Please respond as soon as possible and include the following information: your name, address, telephone number, county, and brief directions to your home. Selected participants will be notified prior to testing. If you have any questions or want to sign up by phone, please call Lora Overacre or Sue Grunwald at 404657-6155.
