The federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) evaluated fuel economy impacts of reformulated gasoline using a number of studies and found that the use of oxygenated fuels and RFA causes a small decrease (approximately one to three percent) in fuel economy. IN the summer RFGs contain one percent less energy per gallon and about three percent in the winter. That means that a car that usually gets 25 miles per gallon in the winter with conventional gasoline may get 24.25 miles per gallon with RFG. * * * Is it safe to use bacon after the date on the package? My children refuse to eat food that is even one day pass this date. Open dating which is a calendar date as opposed to a code, is a date stamped on the package of a product that store management use to determine how long a product can be legally sold. This date is a quality date and not a safety date. Open dating is found primarily on perishable foods such as meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products. If immediately adjacent to the date the phrase "Use-By," the date is the last date recommended for the use of the product while at peak quality. The program also assists local governments with compliance of the yard waste ban implemented in September 1996. The regulation prohibits the disposal of yard waste in landfills. Last year, 327 ,578 trees were coliected statewide. "This event diverts more than 300,000 Christmas trees annually from landfills throughout the state and reinforces the steps we need to take to keep all yard waste from being disposed in landfills and taking up valuable space," said Heather Hardy Leo, coordinator of the statewide event. "It also allows communities to spread the word about recycling and environmental conservation." For more information, call (404) 679- 1598. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Resources Division's Bobwhite Quail Initiative. (BQI) recently expanded the program eligibility requirements to include lands enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) Longleaf Pine Conservation Priority Area. BQI is a voluntary program to help restore quality early successional habitat for bobwhite quail and songbirds, improve water quality and reduce soil erosion. Although the program targets only agricultural lands in 14 counties in Georgia, technical assistance is available to everyone interested in managing for quail. Financial incentives will be paid to qualified landowners if proposals score high enough for BQI enrollment. Incentive payments will be allocated on a competitive basis under three-year Bernard Miller of Milan, Ga., is shown in his okra patch which grew to over 10 feet tall at his farm. contracts for establishing field borders, hedgerows and center pivot comers, as well as for prescribed burning of pine stands adjacent to row crop agriculture. This is a good time of year to tackle those garden projects you have not had time to do earlier in the year. Some examples are installing edging around planting beds; constructing walkways, walls and terraces; and taking soil samples for testing. If you have a soil test done now, you will receive the results in time for you to improve the soil before spring planting. Be sure to keep your compost pile moist by letting a sprinkler or soaker hose run on it for a couple of hours every two or three weeks. Although it may be cold outside, compost piles remain warm as active bacteria work to decompose leaves, clippings and other organic materials. However, if the pile becomes too dry, the decomposition will slow down and may eventually stop. This month you can prune summerflowering plants, such as rose-of Sharon and Japanese kerria, because their flowers are borne on the new wood produced in the spring. Do not prune spring-flowering shrubs such as azaleas and oakleaf hydrangea, because you will remove all of the flower buds. Wait and prune these plants after flowering is completed.
