No..6 vMJl> Cfw6e Corn Commission A Success Story Since before General Oglethorpe established the colony of Georgia, com has been grown on the soils of our state. Today, com is grown from the North Georgia mountains to the fields of the Coastal Plain. Georgia corn growers produced approximately 22,525,000 bushels on 265,000 acres in 1998. Our growers are some of the most efficient in the South. In 1997 Georgia recorded the highest yield per acre in the nation in one of the categories of the National Com Growers Com Yield Contest. In 1998 the winning yield in the state was 242 bushels per acre, an amazing yield considering the challenges Our guest columnist this week is Donald Chase, Chairman, Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Corn, P.O. Box 596, Oglethorpe, GA 31060. presented. There are many success stories in Georgia com production. I believe the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Com is one of those. In 1996 Georgia com growers voted to invest one cent per bushel of com in research, promotion and education. The purpose of this or any commodity commission is to provide information that will strengthen the industry in Georgia. We have concentrated on funding research to assist growers in facing the challenges of growing com in Georgia. Projects funded include those evaluating weed control strategies, grain storage .challenges, tillage options, irrigation studies, aflatoxin elimination and others.. We also have participated in national efforts through the National Com Growers Association. Projects that it funds include ethanol enhancement, com derivatives and enhancement, and leadership in the Com Genome Initiative. This project, which received $85 million in funding from the National Science Foundation, seeks to map the genomic structure of com. As one might imagine, the possibilities are absolutely incredible in this area. Looking back over the last three years, I am proud of the accomplishments of Georgia com growers and their investments for the future of com production. This month we have the opportunity to continue our commodity commission by voting for reaffirmation. If you grew com in 1998, you already should have received a ballot. If you are in favor of continuing this investment in the future, please take the time to fill out your ballot and mail it in. As the grower chairman of your commission, I feel that we are just now beginning to see the benefits from these investments, and that we will see ever-increasing benefits from future investment. Wednesday February 10, 1999 Copyright 1999 Fuel and Measures Division Monitors '97 Census 'Snaps Picture' Quality of Fuel Supplies in Georgia Of Georgia's Agriculture The 1997 Census of Agriculture Georgia motorists are constantly on the go, whether they're traveling to and from work or taking their families on vacation. Year 'round travelers are concerned not only with the price of gasoline, but with the quality as well. While the Fuel and Measures Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture has no control over the price of gasoline, it has a lot to do with the quality consumers receive. Regulating motor fuel quality is a key responsibility in the Department's mission to protect consumers and farmers. The Fuel and Measures Division monitors the wholesale distribution and retail sales of a tremendous amount of petroleum products. Georgia currently ranks ninth nationally with annual gasoline sales of over four billion: gallons and ranks fifth in diesel fuel marketing with yearly sales exceeding one billion gallons. In addition to gasoline and diesel fuel, the Department inspects aviation fuels and kerosene. Retail gas pumps, terminal and transport truck meters are tested to assure accurate delivery, and station signs are monitored to verify that advertised prices are the same as those on the pumps. Also, petroleum storage tanks are checked for potential water or contamination problems. Consequently, Georgia motorists have relatively few problems related to fuel quality. The number of gasoline pumps tested out of tolerance has been minimal over the past few years, and much lower percentage-wise than the national average. That kind of quality control is important not only to gasoline consumers but also to Georgia's rural communities where diesel fuel is used in farming operations and home heating. In addition to routine petroleum inspections at retail and distribution points, reported almost $5 billion in sales of Georgia agricultural products in 1997, an increase of 42 percent from 1992. Livestock, poultry and their products accounted for 62 percent of this total. The average sales per farm in 1997 was $123,789, up 43 percent from 1992. State. information for this census was tabulated by the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. Every five years, the census of agriculture takes a snapshot of Georgia's agriculture. This picture is an invaluable tool for assessing trends and determining current needs of farmers at the local level.
