Afterwards, an access hole about two and one-half inches in diameter should be cut on one side of each gourd about one inch up from the bottom. After the seed are removed, drill several -drain holes about one-foUrth inch in diameter in the bottom of each gourd. Then drill a hole through the neck of each gourd so you will have a means to hang it. The gourds should then be dipped or soaked in wood preserver. When dry, paint the outside with a coat of white, oil-based paint to keep the martins cool in hot weather. Spraying the interior with white paint will help to discourage other birds, particularly starlings, which prefer dark nesting cavities. Plastic jugs are prepared as you would gourds except they do not need to cure or to be treated with preservative. Cut the entrance and drain holes like those for gourds. To hang the jug, run a wire through its lid. . One advantage of gourds is that they swing and sway in the breeze, which makes them attractive to martins, but less attractive to the European Starling and English House Sparrow that are the martins' main competitors for nesting sites. "Georgia has become more active in fresh market crops," she said. ''These crops are hand-harvested and are very labor intensive, and that labor isn't available locally." Ms. Meadows added that the local communities can't provide housing for the large influx of workers. ''These workers typically will be on the farm during planting season and then will come back for the harvest," she said. ''The surrounding towns are small without a lot of apartment complexes or available rental housing." According to Sherry Sparks of the Georgia Department of Labor, housing is seen as a fringe benefit. "If they have a choice, where do you think they'll work? A farm with housing or a farm without it?" she said. USDA - Rural Development currently is (Continued on Page 10) Ga. Uido& Ow CimJJ Little Damage Caused By Frosty New Year A cold New Year sent a shiver through Vidalia onion farmers, but they can breathe easier because the frosty first week caused little damage to the sweet Georgia crop, according to Al Purvis, a research horticulturist with the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station in Tifton, Ga. "We saw some damage to the leaves, but the cold didn't damage the growing points in the onion plants," he said. "That's certainly good news that there wasn't any major negative effect on the plants." Reid Torrance, a county Extension agent in Tattnall County, where about 60 percent of the Vidalia onions grow, said the onions were prepared for the cold this year. "It's not like it was in 1996," he said. (Continued on Page 12) Farmland Edition Planned in March The Spring Farmland Edition of the Market Bulletin will be published March 10. Consumers are encouraged to call the Market Bulletin office toll-free at 1- 800-282-5852 to report ads not in compliance with this requirement. * Descriptive terms should be limited to those characterizing farm property or agricultural structures, such. as barns, stables, etc. Descriptive terms, such as square footage of homes, number of bedrooms, bathrooms, etc., will not be included for non-agricultural structures. * Only one ad per household per farmland issue is permitted. * For best results, include the price of the property in the notice. * Farmland ads cannot exceed 30 words Ga. Inspectors Check for Recalled Frankfurters, Lunch Combo Products Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin announced last week that Georgia Department of Agriculture inspectors are looking for recalled frankfurters and lunch combination products from an ArkanSiJ.S meat processing plant during their inspections of grocery and convenience stores. Meat products manufactured at Thom Apple Valley's meat processing plant in Forrest City, Ark. are being voluntarily recalled due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium ,that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections. Numerous brands' of products are involved. The products being recalled bear "EST 13529" or "EST P-13529" on the package. Consumers should check any frankfurters or what is referred to as "lunch combination products" (combinations of luncheon meats or items such as turkey packaged with cheese) for these numbers. These are known as "establishment numbers" and refer to the plant where the product was manufactured. Consumers should look for these instead of "sell-by" dates since many "sell-by" dates are involved, according to Commissioner Irvin. Consumers who purchased products with these establishment numbers should return them to the place of purchase for a refund, said Comniissioner Irvin. The products were distributed nationwide and to foreign countries including South Korea and Russia. Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially serious disease. The most c-0mmon manifestation of listeriosis is meningitis, which has symptoms of high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections to infants, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems such as persons ~ith chronic disease, HIV infection or taking chemotherapy for cancer. Consumers with questions may telephone the toll-free United States Department of Agriculture's Meat and. Poultry Hotline at 1-800-535-4555 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Consumers seeking information about the recall may contact Thom Apple Valley at 1800-839-2427. Department Sets Contest for Ag Day '99 March 18 is designated as Agriculture Day in Georgia for 1999.
