''\ -IVIARKET BULLETIN GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER Vol. it, No. 45 . U~DA Launches New Biotechnology Web Site The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently unveiled a new Internet web page which provides easy public access to the Department's vast amount of material on agricultural biotechnology issues. "There is an ini;redible amount of information on biotechnology available through hundreds of sites on the Internet," said Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman. "By creating this new central web site, we're providing a starting point for the general public, media, industry, academia and our international trading partners to access information about USDA's role in agricultural biotechnology." Several USDA agencies have a role in biotechnology issues. The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, the Food Safety Inspection Service, and the Agricultural Marketing Service have regulatory functions involving biotechnology. The Agricultural Research Service, the Economic Research Service, and the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service conduct or fund agricultural biotechnology research. The Foreign Agricultural Service addresses trade issues related to biotechnology. The new website can be accessed at www.aphis.usda.gov/biotechnology/. Poultry Expo Offers On-Line Registration The U.S. Poultry & Egg Association is offering on-line pre-registration for the next International Poultry Exposition, scheduled Jan. 19-21, 2000, at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. The pre-registration fee for the International Poultry Exposition is $20. On-site registration is $30 (cash only). Pre-registration forms must be postmarked by Dec. 18 for international attendees and Dec. 24 for domestic attendees. Food Safety Grant Early last year my pecan trees looked good. Then around harvest time I noticed what Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin announced last week that the Georgia Department of Agriculture has received a federal food safety grant. The Food and Drug Administration recently announced that it is awarding grants for innovative food safety projects to 11 state and local regulatory agencies. This pilot program is intended to compliment, develop or improve state and local food safety programs that also may be used in other state or local jurisdictions. These appeared to be little bags on the leaves and later the nuts just dropped off. How can I keep this from happening this year? Based on you description, your pecan tree problem was twofold. The "little bags" which are more commonly referred to as galls or warts, were caused by wasps. Wasp damage, though unsightly, is usually limited to the leaves of the tree and does not affect the nuts. Premature nut drop in most cases is caused by pecan weevils. Contact your local county extension agent for assistance in establishing a spray schedule to combat this pest. The Georgia Department of Agriculture's Consumer Protection Division received $50,000 of this grant money for its "Hands on HACCP Packaged for the Ready-to-Eat (RTE) Food Industry" program. This is an educational program targeted for the Georgia food inspectors and clientele in Georgia's RTE food industry. Ready-to-Eat foods have become increasingly popular as value-added, convenience items to consumers and include fresh, whole fruits and vegetables, fresh-cut and packaged produce, and acid/acidified foods. "Georgia ranks third in acreage and fourth in total .production, making it a significant U.S. supplier of fresh produce to the American people," said Irvin. "We have an obligation to ensure safe fresh foods to the consumer and this FDA grant will help us better accomplish that function through education of safe handling procedures." The occurrence of frost in fall increases the danger of prussic acid poisoning in beef and dairy c.attle. Prussic acid (HCN) can be released in a relatively short period of time if plant tissue is injured or damaged as it can be through freezing and wilting. Potential prussic acid poisoning is more likely to occur with forage sorghums or sudangrass. Sorghums and sorghumsudangrass hybrids generally contain more prussic acid than sudangrass. Frosted sudangrass is extremely dangerous until thoroughly dried. Other plants which can release toxic levels of prussic acid are Johnsongrass, choke cherry, black cherry and velvetgrass, Once forage is consumed, prussic acid is released in the rumen and absorbed into the bloodstream where it combines with hemoglobin in the red blood cells and prevents the transfer of oxygen from hemoglobin to the tissues. Symptoms of toxicity include increased respiration rate, increased pulse rate, muscular tremors, the bright rea color of the blood. Following are some recommendations to help prevent the likelihood of prussic acid poisoning provided by University of Georgia Extension Dairy Scientists James W. Smith and Larry D. Guthrie: Farmers are advised to use extreme caution when allowing allimals to graze following a frost. A light frost may only kill the tops of plants, and new shoots may develop. These shoots are preferred by livestock, but they are high in prussic acid. Cattle should not be allowed to graze on plants until new shoots are killed by frost. Plants that were safe to graze before a killing frost (above 18 inches or headed sorghum) can be safely grazed 7 - 10 days following a frost. Plants that were too short for safe grazing before a killing frost should not be grazed for at least two weeks. Beware of Johnsongrass or cherry (Continued on Page 11) Special Handicraft foaming from the mouth and a blue coloration of lining of the mouth. Cookbook Offered Edition See Page 11 Clinical signs of prussic acid .poisoning are seldom observed since death occurs within 15 - 20 minutes after the intake of toxic forage. A characteristic symptom is In Time for Holidays The Market Bulletin is again offering its 'Best of Georgia Farms' cookbook in time for the Christmas holidays. Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current germination report (not more than 9 months old) for each type seed advertised. Reports will be returned upon request. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9134, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Doles 6738, 6847 and Haskell may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Division, (404) 656-3635.
