IVIARKET BULLETIN GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER- Vol.~ No. 44 'Ort. W"iU' ialtt I. $ega114 Society Supports Georgia Agriculture The Georgia Plant Food Educational Society (GPFES) was founded in 1951 to improve industry members' interaction with the University of Georgia's College of Agriculture faculty. Its' mission was education, not only of its members, but farmers as well. The bonding with the college resulted in fertilizer recommendations that . were based on sound science. Today, its diverse membership of 350 people represents 16 states and 95% of the members are associated directly with the fertilizer and lime industry. The Society maintains a close working relationship with the Georgia Department ofAgriculture (GDA). Since its inception, members have helped the Department Our guest columnist this week is Dr. William I. Segars, President, The Georgia Plant Food Educational Society, Inc., 3117 Plant Sciences Bldg., Cooperative Extension Service, University of Georgia, Athens, Ga. 30602. craft the Plant Food Act and Liming Act that are used to regulate the industry and maintain consumer confidence when fertilizer and lime are purchased. Close rapport with the Department is primarily maintained by the Society's Educational Relations Committee. GPFES was instrumental in the early 1960s with working with the GDA to prohibit the sale of any fertilizer that contained less than 20 units of N-P-K. Grades such as 4-8-6, 3-3-9, and 3-6-6 were replaced with 5-10-15, 7-14-21, and 14-7-14. Consumers benefited by lower prices per unit of plant food as a result of these higher analysis fertilizers. The GPFES continues to support special projects with funds raised by its members. Most of the monies go to support the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. To date, the Society has contributed over $500,000. Projects currently supported are J. Fielding Reed scholarsh~ps to undergraduate students at both the University of Georgia and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, science fairs and soil judging activities, 4-H programs, as well _as demonstration projects on precision agriculture and cotton fertilization. The Society was the first in the south to promote and support the national Certified Crop Advisors (CCA) program. These products were distributed nationwide and some of the distribution has reached Georgia. This action is an expansion of an earlier recall of these products. On Oct. 13, the firm began voluntarily recalling approximately 52,000 pounds of franks suspected of being contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. None of these earlier franks were distributed to Georgia. However, subsequent testing by the company of the product from other production dates prompted the firm to expand the recall last week. The plant . involved, located in the Bronx, N.Y., closed voluntarily on Oct. 14. No additional product has been produced at or shipped from the plant since then. All 16-oz. and five-pound packages of "Sabrett" brand Skinless Beef Frankfurters and "Western Beef' brand "Skinless Beef. Frankfurters with "EST 8854" inside the USDA seal of inspection are being recalled. Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weak immune systems such as infants, the frail or elderly, and persons with chronic disease, with HIV infection, (Continued on Page 11) Project to Measure Ga.'s Agricultural Water Use The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is funding a University of Georgia project called Ag Water PUMPING (Potential Use and Management Program in Georgia). The purpose of the project, which is being conducted by the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, is to devise a means to monitor a statistical sample of the state's irrigation systems. "The U.S. Geological Survey had tried to get farmers _to volunteer in a project like this," said State Geologist Bill McLemore . "But the USGS approach didn't get the needed data. USGS has good planners in Atlanta, but doesn't have a local presence_ close to the farmers." The CAES, through its Extension .Service, does. Agents in every county work daily with farmers and have close links with CAES engineers and other scientists.
