Well, now is your chance. There is a time machine near Lumpkin, Ga., and you are invited to use it! The "time machine" is called Westville Village. Westville is a living history museum, "an 1850 working town." Period buildings, furnishings, and gardens have been carefully assembled at Westville. Costumed staff carry out the daily work of their 1850 counterparts - basket makers, fireplace cooks, potters, blacksmiths, weavers, and more. The idea is to stimulate through research what an 1850 town might have looked like.' When you walk through Westville's "Gates to the Past," you experience for yourself the life of 149 Our guest columnist this week is Matthew M. Moye, Executive Director, Westville Village, P.O. Box 1850, Martin Luther King Drive, Lumpkin, Ga. 31815. years ago, a time when machines were much less important than they are to us today. Westville contrasts modem life with that which our ancestors lived; that is, without electricity, telephones, penicillin, television, computers, etc. Some people may think that we would be better off without all those conveniences, but that is not Westville's point. Westville instead helps visitors understand what changes have taken place in the last century-anda7half and why. Perhaps you have been thinking about abandoning the modem life and getting back to basics. Come to Westville before you do. Westville will show you that there is a lot of good in the basics, but don't think your life will suddenly be uncomplicated without technology. Let me illustrate my point by directing you to one of the 28 restored historic buildings at Westville - Dr. Paullin's Physician's Office. Medicine in 1850 was brutal - you can see that by taking a fook at the surgeon's saw. Anesthetics were brand new in 1850, and penicillin hadn't even been dreamed of yet. Tell the truth: that two~hour wait in-the doctor's office for laser surgery doesn't seem so bad now, does it? Need water to scrub your clothes? Get ready to haul it from the well on the (Contim1ed on Page 12) Wednesday October 13, 1999 -Statistics Study Measures Agricultural Management Issues in U.S. and Georgia Copyright 1999 In order to gather reliable, objective information about U.S. agriculture, the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will conduct the Agricultural Resource Management Study. Information on chemical applications, production practices, and pest management practices are topics to be measured by this this study during the fall of 1999. Fewer than 12,000 of the nation's two million farm operators will be asked to participate in the study, so every response is critical. The Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service will contact some 300 peanut and cotton producers in Georgia. The agricultural producers selected to participate in the Agricultural Resource Management Study will be making an important contribution to the overall welfare of the U.S. agricultural community. All study information will be merged and used by commodity analysts, producer organizations, and others to benefit Georgia farmers. Study participants have an opportunity to set the record straight about issues that affect them - such as use of fertilizers and pesticides, and respondents help in the research for . improved production, marketing, and profitabillty of U.S. agricultural commodities. "Providing clean, safe and affordable housing for farm workers will make Georgia an attractive work site for workers and their families." The housing complex will include two four-bedroom apartments, 15 threebedroom apartments and nine with two bedrooms. Construction time is 270 ~(Continued on Page 11) When Hurricane Floyd arrived off the coast of Georgia last month, the Georgia Department of Agriculture assisted with the eyacuation of approximately 500,000 coastal county residents, as well as a number of pet animals and livestock. Many of the small animals were transported to the Centreplex in Macon, which served as the largest pet friendly shelter in the state. In the photo above, volunteers are shown sorting through some of the pet food and supplies donated by the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association and the Humane Association of Georgia. UGA Honors Agricultural Alumni The Agricultural Alumni Association recently honored its own at its 45th annual awards banquet in Athens. Members are graduates of .the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. The late John William Firor Sr. was inducted into the Agricultural Hall of Fame. Firor organized and chaired the UGA Department of Agricultural Economics in 1929. The Award of Excellence honored Wilbur Mull, Lawrence Risse and Ed Brown, all of Athens. This new award recognizes alumni who excelled in their field. Estes Reynolds, a UGA Extension Service food scientist in Athens, received the Outstanding Faculty Award. Mull, a national leader in the Green Industry, founded Classic Groundcovers, Inc., in Athens in 1963, becoming the largest business of its kind, a wholesale nursery specializing in grou:ndcover-only plants. Risse conducted research around the world for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, studying handling, packaging and transportation of fruits and vegetables. Brown coordinates the state extension program in plant pathology. He is an expert in turf grass, forestry and shade trees. Reynolds coordinates the outreach program for the Department of Food Science and Technology and the Food Process Research and Development Laboratory. He has developed curriculums for the food industry.
