Waste pesticide and pesticide containers from agricultural use may present a disposal problem in some rural areas because of their volume and the potential for environmental problems. . And, since many unwanted pesticides are stored in poor condition, the Department of Agriculture decided that it's important to collect and properly < __ .,,. "' " Editor's Note The headline in last week's article on the recently released crop report from the Georgia .Agricultural Statistics Service erroneously stated Georgia's cotton production was up 32 percent. The correct total, based on the August 12 report, was 23 percent. The editor regrets the error. This early forecast was based on a survey of growers and field measurements in early August. Readers should bear in mind that forecasted yields can change rather quickly based on precipitation, disease, insect pressures and harvest weather. Additional collection locations may be added within the listed county area~ as needed. During the last fiscal year (July 1, 1998 to June 30, 1999), 353,060 pounds of pesticides were collected from 23 USDA to Release Tobacco Information The U.S. Department of Agriculture can now release information regarding tobacco production and producer marketing to state organizations distributing tobacco settlement funds to farmers. Public Law 106-47, signed by President Clinton on Aug. 13, amends the Agricultural Act of 1938 to allow USDA to release otherwise confidential tobacco production and producer marketing information to the state organizations overseeing distribution of a $5.15 billion farm trust fund. The fund was set up by the four major cigarette companies for the benefit of persons involved in growing cigarette tobaccos (flue-cured, burley, and Maryland kinds of tobacco). Individual state organizations in 'the producing regions will be charged with distributing the settlement funds to tobacco producers and quota owners and with developing eligibility requirements. The new law directs USDA to permit (Continued on Page 11) counties around the state. Since the program began in 1995, 421,689 pounds of pesticides have been collected. The hot, dry weather and lack of moisture. have left producers without sufficient pasture, forcing them to use their hay reserves much earlier in the year and in greater quantities in order to continue to feed their livestock. Two states particularly affected by the drought are New Jersey and Maryland. As a result, these states have set up emergency services to try and help farmers locate sources of hay. If you are a hay producer and you have hay to donate, or to sell at minimal costs, please contact the emergency hay hotline numbers listed below: New Jersey: (609) 984-4389 (day); (609) 292-3978 (fax) Maryland: (410) 841-6770 (day); (410) 280:-9652 (evening); (410) 8415987 (fax) Farmers in these states would be grateful for any assistance in helping them through this devastating year. Georgia stat~ officers of the Future Farmers of America recently had lunch and discussed agricultural issues with Commissioner Tommy Irvin ~t his office in Atlanta. The offi~ers asked Irvin about changes in agriculture during his. tenure, the national political scene, tobacco, Georgia history, and other topics. Shown. (1-r) are Emily Howard, Newborn, and Jody Underwood, Twin City, both vice presidents; Irvin; Gregory Ellis, Chatsworth, president; and Amanda Padgett, Carnesville, vice president. Also taking part was Katrina Jones, Dublin, director of the Georgia FFA Foundation.
