Facing these challenges an:d many others, the industry recognized the importance of developing the full potential of its leadership base. After several months of research, planning and networking, a statewide agricultural leadership program was developed. A consortium of state organizations involved with the agricultural economy supported the effort along with many key agricultural leaders in the private, academic and Our guest columnist this week is Donnie Smith, Chairman, Georgia AgriLeaders Forum Foundation, Inc., 1217 Eagle Ridge Road, Dawsonville, Ga. 30434. agribusiness sector. The Georgia Agri-Leaders Forum Foundation, Inc., formed in 1990, continues to play a pivotal role in preparing current and emerging agricultural leaders for even greater leadership roles. The Foundation is a non-profit, 501 ( c) ( 3 ) corporation and is managed by a board of directors composed of key leaders from Georgia agriculture and agribusiness. The mission of the Foundation is: "To provide a forum for developing individual leaders skilled in communications, educated in local, national and world affairs, familiar with the changing needs of our society, and prepared to meet the present and future challenges." It has been said that today's answer to tomorrow's agricultural problems and opportunities is three-fold: Leadership, Leadership and Leadership. The qualities of leadership springing up from within men and women can navigate the worst of storms and chart the most successful of voyages upon life's seas. The Foundation selects up to 30 men and women each year for participation in its leadership institutes. Individuals may be nominated .pr may apply directly to the Foundation. Six institutes are held each year and each institute focuses on different aspects of leadership. Four of the institutes are held in Georgla and two are held in other locations. Four of the institutes are conducted from Thursday 12 noon to Saturday 12 noon with the other two held generally Monday through Saturday. The institutes focus on key issues sttch (Continued on Page 12) Wednesday August 18, 1999 Treated Timber Products Regulated by Department The Georgia Department ofAgriculture regulates pressure-treated timber products, part of Georgia's billion-dollar forestry industry. These products include lumber, fence posts, rails and landscape timber. Under the Georgia Treated Timber Products Act, the Agriculture Department is required to license all Georgia treaters and dealers who treat timber. outside the state, but sell in Georgia. This act was passed to assure consumers get the quality they pay for when buying treated timber Inside Georgia Cooking ................page 5 Bulleitn Calendar ...............page 10 products. Also, the Act requires that all chemical preservatives be applied to ensure proper penetration and retention of the preservative. All treated wood products must be marked with a brand or tag approved by the Commissioner of Agriculture showing the identity of the treater, retention level and the year of treatment. "Pressure-treated timber is quite popular in the construction of outdoor projects," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "Periodically, we get reports of fence posts and landscape timbers delivered to points-ofsale without proper identification. This often occurs when timber is sold from trucks in places such as cattle sale barns." When pressure-treated timber products arrive at the retail location without the proper brand or tag, treaters are required to mark the lumber correctly, or replace it with marked products. Likewise, when the Department finds that the actual treatment of the lumber or timber does not meet the guaranteed standard, the treater can be required to discontinue all sales until the Department is assured the plant can tregtt the products according to legal . specifications. Food samples are compared to label claims for net weight or volume, contents, composition, nutritional elements, and standards of identity and wholesomeness. Products also are analyZed for the presence of undesirable materials such as light and heavy filth, insect and rodent contamination, adulterants, inferior products and foodbome pathogens. In the above photo, John Hembree, laboratory scientist senior, performs a procedure to test a sample of pie for the presence of Salmonella. The sample must first be weighed in a sterile bag before it is subjected to a cultured medium, which Hembree is shown adding to the weighed sample. H Salmonella bacteria are present in the sample, they will grow in the culture medium and will be detected in two to three days. Pick-Your-Own Fruits and Vegetables See page 7 ag consumer line I wash all of my fresh vegetables with soap. All raw meat and poultry are soaked and washed with salt water. My sister-in-law thinks all this washing is unnecessary. Is she right? We equate washing to cleanliness. We wash clothes, cars, dishes and ourselves. So, it is logical that many people would think that meat and poultry are cleaner and safer if they are washed. However, a review of studies from several universities related to washing meat and poultry indicate tha't there is no benefit. In fact washing raw poultry, beef, pork, lamb, or veal before cooking is not recommended. Cooking to a temperature of 160 degrees F. destroys bacteria on the surface of meat and poultry. Some consumers will soa~ meat or poultry in salt water, but this is a personal preference and serves no purpose of food safety. Likewise, sometimes consumers will wash or soak ham, bacon, or pork because they think it reduces the sodium or salt enough to allow these products to be eaten on a sodium-restricted diet. However, washing, rinsing or soaking these products removes vecy little salt. On the other hand, fresh produce should be washed but only in water. Consumers should not wash fruits and vegetables with detergent or soap. These products are not approved or labeled by the, Food and D_rug Administration for use on foods. You could ingest residues from soap or detergent absorbed on the produce. Wash your fresh produce under cold running tap water to remove any lingering dirt. H the surface is firm, such as on apples or potatoes, it can be scrubbed with a brush.
