"Unfortunately for dairy farmers, the past few months have seen a precipitous drop in milk prices," said Keith Kelly, executive vice-president of CCC. "Many farmers are dealing with serious financial problems resulting from events they could not have foreseen and had. no way to defend against. These payments are intended to help them get through this crisis until market conditions improve." The CCC Dairy Market Loss Assistance Program makes payments based on a dairy operation's production of milk in 1997 or 1998. Payments are limited to the first 26,000 hundredweight of production in the selected year. This was done so as not to dilute the assistance available to smaller dairy farmers who may be in the most need. of the assistance and spread the payments more equitably among all dairy operations. All dairy farmers who produced.milk during the last quarter of calendar year 1998 were eligible to sign up to receive payments under the program. Sign-up for the program ran from April 12 to May 21, 1999. Data from the dairy sign-up are still being collected. When that process is complete, the payment rate for eligible production will be calculated and the payments will be distributed by CCC. ag consumer line Can I use the diesel fuel my husband bought for his farm equipment in my new pickup truck? No. Farmers who purchase diesel fuel without paying federal fuel excise taxes can only use the fuel in the production of any agricultural commodity, including livestock and poultry. However, the off-highway business use exemption applies only to vehicles not registered for use on pubic roads. Excise taxes must be paid on all fuels used in licensed vehicles, regardless of where or for what purpose the vehicles are used.
