Despite recent showers, most of Georgia is still in varying degrees of drought conditions, according to the University of Georgia Extension Service. All of the state except the northwest comer is experiencing moderate to severe drought conditions and the northwest comer has mild drought conditions. As of now, the northeast, west central and southern third of $e state have severe drought conditions based on the Palmer Drought Severity Index. The remainder of the state has moderate drought conditions. The weather outlook through May doesn't look promising. It has taken a year for the present conditions to develop and it's going to take several days of rain to make a significant dent in the drought. The dry conditions started in May 1998 and first became critical last summer. Normally, soil moisture is recharged during the winter, but that (Continued on Page 12) Summer is fast approaching - the time consumer's right to defer any buying your home, ask to see his permit issued when nature's bounty is most abundant, decision until after comparing quality, by the Georgia Department ofAgriculture. and consumers find food bargains at price, convenience and guarantees Check to see if the items .on the permit, farmers' markets, pick-your-own independently; and the wisdom to question such as company name and vehicle license operations, roadside stands, as well as the any offers that sound too good to be true, number, are consistent with the vehicle local grocery store: High-quality meat and especially if the salesman offers to arrange he is driving. Once the leaves ~erge and begin photosynthesizing, the tree can provide the energy needed to support the developing fruit. But after the warm winter, Taylor said spring was relatively cool in peachgrowing areas. "The cool spring kept the leaves from growing normally," she said. "It has some of the farmers holding their breath for the late-season varieties." And on top of the too-warm, too-cool problems, Georgia is about seven inches short on rainfall so far this year. "Our growers are busy irrigating now to develop peaches of good size for the market," Taylor said.. Farmers also are making sure their orchards are clean - that no extra weeds or grasses take up water the trees need. Johnny Whiddon, a UGA Extension Service agent in Brooks County, said growers there began picking peaches in the third week of April. "Our crop looks good," he said.
