Items will be published two weeks prior to their occurence in the calendar. Equine events should be included in the quarterly horse edition and should not be resubmitted for publication again in the calen.dar. If a change in the date, time, etc. is necessary, we will be happy to include the notices again as a correction. Calendar announcements should be as close to 20 words as possible and include the following information: date, -time, name of event, location, and name and telephone number for further information. When submitting multiple listings, please submit events taking place on different dates on separate sheets of paper. (All sheets may be mailed in the same envelope, however). When submitting a notice requesting handicraft exhibits, etc.; please specify when you would like the request to be published; otherwise, it will be included approximately one month before the event takes place. Although the tops of trees and shrubs go dormant during the winter months, their roots continue growing. Georgia soils rarely reach root-killing temperatures, but it is a good idea to winterize your trees and shrubs by applying a fresh layer of mulch. If your trees and shrubs need pruning, wait until they are dormant in January or February. Pruning them now will stimulate new growth that may be killed by winter freezes. If you have been storing tulip bulbs in your refrigerator, now is the time for planting them. If you have not purchased your bulbs, you still should be able to purchase them early this month. Mark the locatio11s of any newlyplanted bulbs so you will not accidentally disturb them when planting next spring. You can purchase labels from a plant nursery, garden center or mail-order catalog. Record on the label information such as type of plant, variety, color, height and date using an indelible marker or other marking device that will withstand the weather. If your lawn was plagued by winter weeds last year, this it the time to think about controlling them. Pre-emergent herbicides are effective if applied early before seeds germinate. When you purchase these products, be sure to buy granular materials and apply in a droptype spreader according to label directions. If it does not rain within a few days after application, water your grass thoroughly to help the herbicide come in contact with the seeds. Once weeds become visible in' your lawn, it is too late to use a pre-emergent herbicide. You will need to use a postemergent type. Because these herbicides are contact-type killers (they must touch the growing weed to be effective), some of them require a specific temperature range to be effective so be sure to follow label directions. Also, make sure the herbicide you buy is the appropriate one to use on your lawn. Apply the product on a windless day to keep the chemical from drifting onto other plants. Steeplechase Scheduled At Callaway Gardens The annual Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens will be held on November 7 in Pine Mountain, Ga. This event includes terrier races, entertainment, and the main event: steeplechase horses racing at breakneck speed around the track. Admission prices range from the family favorite casual infield pass at $15 per person (plus $15 per parking pass) up to the terrace box seating for s.ix at $425. For more information, call the Steeplechase Office at (706) 324-6252. Callaway Gardens is located on U.S. Highway 27, 60 minutes southwest of Atlanta and 30 minutes north of Columbus. For further information, call Callaway Gardens at 1-800-CALLAWAY (1-800-225-5292). More Mower Don't retire the lawn mower when the growth of your lawn slows down this fall, according to the University of Georgia Extension Service. As long as the grass keeps growing, it should be mowed. THE MARKET BULLETIN Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin (back row, center) is shown with representatives of the Georgia farms recognized this year as Centennial Farms. Farms must be in continuous operation for 100 years or more and must meet other criteria in order to be designated as Centennial Farms. The Centennial Farm Program is administered by the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The program honors Georgia's farmers for their contributions Jo the state's agriculture heritage and encourages preservation of agricultural resources for future generations. Georgia Centennial Farms Recognized Twelve Georgia farms were recognized as Centennial Farms at a luncheon and award ceremony October 9, 1998, on the opening day of the Georgia National Fair in Perry, Ga. The Centennial Farm Program honors significant farms that have been operating continuously for over 100 years and deserve recognition for their historical importance. Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin was the keynote speaker at the event. Irvin and Leslie Sharp, chair of the Georgia Centennial Farm Program, presented award certificates to each of the recipients. Farms recognized at the event were: Robinson-McNeal Farms, Barrow County Lawson Farms, Brooks County Holland Old Place, Bulloch County Nessmith-Deal Farm, Bulloch County J.C. Mallard Farm, Burke County Johnston Farms, Chattooga County Willcox Farm, Dodge County James B. Kennedy Farm, Hancock County James M. Ross Farm, Jones County Joe L. Marks Farm, Newton County Watson-Joiner Farm, Randolph County Freeman Family Farm, Screven County During its six years of existence, the Georgia Centennial Farm Program has recognized more than 180 farms throughout the state. The program is administered by the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and sponsored by the Historic Preservation Division; Georgia Farm Bureau; Georgia Department of Agriculture; Georgia Forestry Commission; Georgia Cooperative Extension Service; and the Georgia National Fair and Agricenter. Anyone interested in nominating a farm for recognition during the next application cycle must apply before the March 1, 1999, deadline. For an application and information contact: Leslie Sharp, Centennial Farm Committee, Historic Preservation Division, 500 The Healey Building, 57 Forsyth Street NW, Atlanta, Ga. 30303, or call (404) 651-6782. Pumpkin (Continued from Page 1) Orange Orb you will cherish until it's ladled into the pie crust or melts into the compost pile. If you decide to grow your own, consult your county Extension Service office for details. Don't expect to break the world record (more than 1,000 pounds). It's virtually impossible to grow competitively large pumpkins in the Georgia climate. Limit your competition to local and state fairs. How do you pick the proper pumpkin? Choose one -with a hard rind and a dull color. Declining vines indicate a ripe pumpkin, too. Pick pumpkins before frost and leave at least three to four inches of stem on the fruit. One caution: Southern-grown pumpkins usually can't be stored as long as those grown in other areas. We would like to thank Dr. Terry Kelley, a horticulturist with the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, for this article. Leon Swanson is shown with the sunflower that grew in his garden near Ringgold, Ga. The flower measured 12 feet, 2 inches tall. Plant Color Now . According to the University of Georgia Extension Service, October and November are the best months t0 plant trees and shrubs. Garden centers and nurseries usually stock a good selection of woody plants now. Select some accent plants for your landscape that will provide fall colors. Trees that tum red include dogwood, red maple, sweet gum and red or scarlet oak. Shrubs with red fall foliage include viburnum, winged euonymus and barberry. Wednesday October 28, 1998 Take Safety Precautions When Preparing Chitlins Families cooking chitlins for the Thanksgiving or Christmas holidays should take special care while cleaning and handling raw chitlins so their children will not become ill, according to Carol Snype Crawford, director of the Georgia Department of Human Resources Office of Minority Health. "Raw chitlins contain bacteria that can cause severe diarrhea, especially in children," Crawford said. "It takes a long time to prepare chitlins, and these bacteria can grow and spread, even in the refrigerator. The easiest way to prevent infection is to preboil the raw chitlins for five minutes as soon as you get them in the house, or use pre-cooked chitlins." During November and December in Georgia, hospitals report an increase in cases of severe diarrhea caused by the bacteria "Yersinia enterocolitica," or YE, which is found in the intestines of pigs. In fact, Georgia has the largest number of YE infections among the seven sites around the country funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to study serious bacterial illness. Most of the cases are in children under age five who have been in a kitchen where raw chitlins were being prepared. "Most older cooks know how to be very careful about disinfecting anything that has touched raw chitlins," Crawford said. "Boiling the chitlins for five minutes before cleaning them kills all the bacteria. While the chitlins are boiling, clean the kitchen and your hands with warm water and soap. or scouring powder, then clean the chitlins as usual." Crawford said cooks should remember to clean their refrigerator also if raw chitlins were stored in there, as cold doesn't kill YE. "Cook and season the chitlins according to your traditional recipe," she said. "The preboiling cuts the cleaning process in half, and they taste just as good." During November and December this year, DHR's Division of Public Health will distribute fliers, brochures, and grocery store displays about how to prepare chitlins. This will continue a public awareness campaign begun two years ago when Public Health staff gathered information on safe chitlin preparation and cooking from experienced cooks in the community and tested the results scientifically to confirm the effectiveness of preboiling and other prevention measures. For information on how to avoid YE infection through safe chitlin preparation, call your county health department. This two-pound, one-ounce onion was picked in July from the gardeR of Richard C. "I have directed the Farm Service Agency, FSA, to issue these payments as soon as possible to our nation's farmers and ranchers, many of whom are suffering from the worst agricultural crisis in a decade," Glickman said. "The CRP has been tremendously beneficial for producers and the general public. It has reduced soil erosion and expanded wildlife habitat, while improving air and water quality, restoring wetlands, and encouraging tree planting. At the same time, it has strengthened farm income." Under the CRP, producers retire environmentally sensitive land for 10 to 15 years. In return, USDA makes annual rental payments to producers and shares the cost of establishing approved cover. Enrolled land must be highly erodible, contribute to a serious water quality problem, or provide substantial environmental benefits if devt>ted to certain specific conservation uses. Additional CRP information can be obtained on the world wide web at www.fsa.usda.gov/dafp/cepd/crpinfo.htm Statistics for Georgia are as follows: 365 acres enrolled for September, 1998 (1.2 percent); $15,000 in rental payments for October, 1998 (1.1 percent); 7,006 farms; and 8,969 contracts. Special People Edition Planned During the Christmas holiday season, many elderly or shut-in people no longer have family members or friends that can visit them or send them cards and letters. Each year the Market Bulletin publishes a list of these "special people" who would enjoy receiving cards and letters during the holidays. The Special People list for 1998 will be published in the Market Bulletin Dec. 2. Deadline for submitting names is Nov. 18. If you know of an elderly or shut-in reader who would like to be included, please secure his or her permission and include a statement to this effect with the person's signature before submitting the information to the Market Bulletin, Requests submitted without this information will not be published. Please submit the name and address for one person only. Only Georgia residents will be included on the list, and we will not publish any entries which.do not meet the above requirements. Only one Special People list will be published for 1998. Please send entries to the following address: Market Bulletin, Georgia Department of Agriculture, 19 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Atlanta, Ga. 30334-4250. Copyright 1998 It's Time to Pick Out that Special Pumpkin If you haven't already done so, it's time to head for the pumpkin patch, roadside stand or grocery store to pick out that "just right" pumpkin for Halloween. For some folks, the search for the perfect pumpkin has become almost as important as scouring the woods for the perfect Christmas tree. Pumpkins come in many shapes and sizes, and preferences vary. The miniature has become popular among those who dabble in decorative design and the giant is a challenge for the competitive at heart. The pie pumpkin, usually three to six pounds, is the culinary choice. And the jack-o'-lantern types are a cut above for those who like to carve. So, where do we find the one that will satisfy our own holiday desires? The best pumpkin may only be an afternoon's drive away. Or it could be waiting at the local supermarket. Many roadside markets, produce stands and local grocers offer pumpkins. A growing number of farms, too, offer hayrides to the field and let customers select their own pumpkins. This is akin to the stroll in the forest looking for the right Christmas tree or the Thanksgiving morning turkey hunt for the day's main course. ag consumer line My father has a natural spring and well on his property and he would like to go into the bottled water business. What should he do to get started? The first thing your father should do is to contact the Consumer Protection office of the Georgia Department of Agriculture for assistance. The state's bottled water industry is a varied and growing industry that we closely monitor to insure compliance with federal and state regulations. Our labs also test springs and wells for potential bottled water operations or businesses. The milk I purchased at the commissary was sour and all the luncheon meat had expired dates. When I contacted your office to complain, I was instructed to call the manager of the commissary. Why wouldn't your office handle this problem? Military commissaries and exchange offices are federal facilities and unfortunately are outside the jurisdiction of this agency.. Consumers who shop at military commissaries and exchanges and have questions or problems should contact the manager of the facility in question. H, however, after a discussion with local management the problem is not resolved, write John F. Georgia is a top-ten producer of pumpkins in the U.S. Georgia farmers grow about 600 acres of them each year, although that figure has been rising slightly. Most of the pumpkins grown in Georgia are in the northern third of the state, although there are a few south Georgia growers. Plant viruses and insect pressure make growing .pumpkins in south Georgia hard to accomplish. Many of the pumpkins sold in Georgia were grown up north and in the Midwest. Some come from states such as Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Michigan and North Carolina. Don't give up hope, though, for just the right local pumpkin. Your chances of finding it are better if you search local markets and on-farm sales outlets. Then, of course, there's always the challenge of growing your own pumpkin. This is often not possible; but if you have a big yard and don't mind filling some of it with vines, you might want to give it a whirl. For harvest near Halloween or Thanksgiving, don't plant pumpkins until early to late June, depending on the variety. Never plant until danger of frost has passed. Pumpkin varieties vary in size and color. To grow your own, start by selecting the right variety for your use.
