The cantaloupe measured 15 inches long and 37 inches in circumference. As your sunflower heads begin to fade, a hidden treasure awaits, according to Wayne McLaurin, a horticulturist with the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. "Hundreds of edible sunflower seeds are packed into the head," McLaurin said. "If you want to beat the birds to the harvest, cover the faded head with cheesecloth or floating row cover." Check the sunflower heads every few days. When you can rub the seeds off easily with your hand, he said, cut the heads and remove the seeds. "Let them dry in a warm, airy indoor place," he said. "Then roast them and eat them. Or save the seeds for your bird feeder." &A A400 .Pl r-----::::::;; f2 <6;5/41 l\'IARKET BULLETIN GEORGIA DEPARTME-NT OF AGRICULTURE 'TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER Vol. "8:i, No. 41 Cki"""b' B~ Sunbelt Expo Fun And Educational The diversity of exhibits and activities at the Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition make for quite an interesting three days in October. North America's premier farm show, to be held October 20-22 this year, draws over 200,000 local, national and international attendees to Moultrie, Ga. for a literal showcase of farm equipment and technology. The Expo has developed a reputation with exhibitors and visitors as a one-stop information source on the latest technology. The Expo has something for everyone in the agricultural community, from the large farm owner who needs to make a serious buying_ decision to the retired farmer who wants to see if his favorite model is among the antique tractors on display. Renowned as the largest agricultural show in North America with field Our guest columnist this week is Chip Blalock, Director, Sunbelt Expo, 290-G Harper Blvd., Moultrie, Ga. 31768. demonstrations, the Sunbelt Expo is a "must-see" regardless of its size. The field demonstrations allow farmers to compare and contrast machinery running side by side in the fields. The quality of the Expo is evidenced by the number of companies who utilize it as a springboard for new products and services. New additions to the Expo in 1998 include the Precision Ag Section and outdoor Precision Ag demonstrations. Farmers can come in and see how this new technology might fit into their operation. Also, the Land Grant University Spotlight tent will showcase the latest research projects from 14 universities to work together to educate farmers and ranchers on the latest cuttingedge technology available for application on their operations. The show's 600-acre southwest Georgia location is the perfect setting for the wide variety of crops planted in the fields and animals that perform at the show. Covered shuttles transport farmers to the field demonstrations, where they can actually see farm equipment and techniques in operation on a working farm. Spectator seating provides a comfortable respite for visitors who simply want to enjoy the various cattle and horse activities, the stock dog trials, the alpaca or goat exhibits, the hunting (Continued on Page 12) Wednesday October 14, 1998 Copyright 1998 Georgia's Small Grains Grain Storage: Georgia Producers Show Decline in Yields A cool, wet planting season for the 1998 crop hampered the development of the state's small grains, according to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. Wheat, oats and rye all showed a slight decline in yields from a year earlier. All wheat planted in Georgia for the 1998 crop decreased a significant 110,000 acres, or 27 percent from 1997, to 290,000 acres. A wet fall and winter kept many growers out of their fields. Wheat harvested for grain decreased 120,000 acres or 33 percent from last year to 240,000 acres. Wheat yields dropped 1 bushel per acre in 1998 to 43 bushels per acre. Production totaled 10.3 million bushels, 35 percent less than in 1997. Oats planted for the 1998 crop showed a decline of 20,000 acres from a year earlier to 50,000 acres. Oats harvested for grain also decreased, from 40,000 acres to 25,000 acres in 1998. Yields averaged 53 bushels per harvested acre, three bushels less than 1997's yield of 56 bushels. Production totaled 1.33 milli6n bushels, down 41 percent from last year's 2.24 million bushels. Georgia's acreage planted to rye, at 250,000 acres, is 50,000 acres less than 1997 and 1996. Most of the rye in Georgia is used for winter grazing and winter cover crops. However, 50,000 acres were kept to maturity and harvested for grain and seed. This was 15 ,000 acres less than in 1997 and 20,000 acres less than in 1996. Yields averaged 21 bushels per acre compared to 22 bushels in 1997 and 26 bushels per acre in 1996.
