THE MARKET BULLETIN Market Watch Wednesday August 5, 1998 The Market Bulletin office frequently receives requests for information on a variety of plants, fruits and vegetables. One fruit that seems to have a certain mistique is the citron. Frequently found growing wild in fields in south Georgia, the citron~ or preserving melon, is a peculiar midget watermelon. A botanical variety of watermelon, the citron is thought to have been brought to this country on slave ships. A citron has an extremely toughskin and is very hard to cut The whitefleshed fruit actually gets harder with age. Though it cannot be eaten raw, citron is excellent cooked and candied. The three melons shown above were supplied by G. L. Arflin of Unadilla, Ga. Ga. Meat Goat Assn. To Hold Meeting The Georgia Meat Goat Association will hold a meeting Saturday, August 22 at the Georgia Farm Bureau, located at 1620 Bass Road, in Macon. The education meeting, which begins at 10 a.m., will feature Buddy Hanson, livestock nutritionist from the W. B. Fleming Company, in Tifton, as the guest speaker. He will discuss the need and importance of minerals as they relate to meat goats. This meeting is open to anyone who raises goats. Contact Bill Haas at (912) 987-1789 for additional information. This tobasco pepper plant grown by Vince Forester of Kennesaw, Ga had 278 peppers on it and rose to a height of six feet. Outlook Briefs U.S. Cattle Numbers Continue Decline. The USDA released the midyear total of cattle and calf inventory on July 17; as expected the report showed a continued decline in U.S. cattle numbers. Low cattle prices and unfavorable weather in recent years have caused cowcalf producers to reduce breeding animal numbers. The 1998 calf crop was estimated to be 37.9 million head (2 percent smaller than 1997's), the smallest since 1951. The mid-year all cattle and. calf count was 107 million head, down 2 percent from a year ago. The number of beef cows also was down 2 percent at 34.1 million head, the smallest July 1 count since 1992. The number of dairy cows in the U.S. also declined. The number of heifers held for beef cow replacement purposes was 6 percent below a year earlier and paralleled the large number of heifers that have entered feedlots and shown up in fed cattle slaughter. The reported number of heifers held for replacement purposes was the smallest for July 1 since 1989. The report indicated that the supply of feeder cattle outside feedlots remained well below a year ago (down about 1 million head), as of July 1. The declines in the cowherd suggest that feeder cattle supplies will likely continue to decline for several years. The price enhancing effects of lower cattle supplies may be more apparent in 1999 than they will be in 1998. This was expected to be the case based on past cattle price cycles. Further year-to-year declines in the cattle inventory are expected to be reported on January 1, 1999, and the cattle numbers are not expected to bottom before January 1, 2000. Drought and the Cattle Cycle. With drought reduced feed supplies staring everyone in the face, many cattlemen who haven't already will soon have to make some tough choices on what to keep and what to fold. Here's our top six sale.barn choices for commercial cattlemen faced with limited feed supplies. We'll start with number 1 and work our way down. (1) Old and/or Unproductive Cows No need to give a reason here but woe be to the cattleman who can't identify these cows in the herd! (2) Steer and Bull Calves - Faced with limited feed supplies, this is not the year to hold on to steer calves much, if any, past weaning. Before the drought and recent drop in calf prices this didn't shape up as much of a year to stocker calves, but those with feed or pasture may have Cl: shot at picking up some calves on the current weak market and holding into late winter or early next spring when we expect prices to at least equal their 1997 price levels. Still, if we've got to choose between a mama and her calf based on the long term outlook - the calf goes. (3) Heifer Calves - Same reason as above except heifers provide better stocker return potential than steers. The reason is that heifer discounts (relative to steers) become smaller at heavier weights. With the possibility for some replacement premiums showing up in 1999, this makes the rationale for rolling the steers before the heifers even stronger. (4) Older Productive Cows - If she's got fewer calves in her we'd rather have the bred heifer with (hopefully) better genetic potential. (5) Bred Heifers - See number four. (6) Young Productive Cows - It is this group of cows which has the most profit potential in the herd. If this price cycle progresses as past - and guess what, to date it has - 1999 and 2000 give 'us the best possibility for moving into a higher price level. We'll have 3 to 4 years of liquidation behind us, and as soon as some reason for optimism shows its face, the cattle market could jump fast. The only way to be able to catch the wave will be with a productive cow herd putting as many calves as possible on the ground during the good times. One other thought on the feed situation-grain and soybean meal prices look to be significantly lower than last year as the weight of a large crop in the Midwest looks more and more likely. This will eventually help the feeder calf market, but that's not the point. Cotton, on the other hand, has been more affected by the Southern drought. Bottom line, come this fall, cotton seed may be more expensive as a supplemental feed than the equivalent of grain and meal. Watch what you buy based on this year's prices and not on tradition. Corn Market .Situation. December delivery futures prices have been very volatile during July as wary traders switched positions with the changing weather forecasts. It now looks like good growing conditions will prevail through the pollination period and ample moisture will allow for early kernel development to proceed. The long term trend is downward and it's likely that the support level near the $2.10 level will be tested. The prospects for a large crop and increased carry out stocks will act as a drag on any rallies. We need to find a price level that will stimulate demand to help clean out the bins. Soybean Market Outlook. November delivery soybean futures prices have made new lows on the long downtrend that actually started after last year's harvest. The trend has been erratic due to trader concerns over weather forecasts but the direction is clear. Prospects for a record large U.S. crop and the hangover from the South American record crop will pressure prices lower still. We expect futures prices to work under the $5.50 level into the fall. This will help stimulate demand and equally importantly, discourage South American plantings this fall. If these two events come to pass, look for post-harvest prices to show improvement. U.S. Senate Passes "Emergency" Assistance For Farmers. Faced with a variety of regional farm crises, the Senate contemplated a variety of responses during debate on the 1999 Agricultural Spending Bill. The $57.3 billion bill was passed on July 16. The most heralded response is the amendment by Kent Conrad (ND) to provide $500 million in emergency assistance to farmers suffering because of shrinking income, bad weather, or crop disease such as "scab" plaguing wheat crops in the High Plains. The amendment was approved by voice vote and has President Clinton's support. But the proposal faces a cloudy future (Continued on Page 11) Fire Blight Identify fire blight on apple and pear trees by looking for blackened twigs and branches, according to the University of Georgia Extension Service. The disease will spread and kill the tree if not controlled. Remove all blighted twigs. Cut 8 inches below the infected area. Disinfect pruning tools after each cut to prevent spreading the disease .. Dip the blades in a solution of one part household bleach and nine parts water These banana plants were grown by James H. "It's hard to kill mature weeds with chemical," said Westerfield. "Spot treatments with a nonselective herbicide such as Roundup or Finale may be possible if you're careful not to contact desirable plants," he said. Adding a new layer of mulch can go a long way, too, toward controlling unwanted weeds. Westerfield advises to take a close look at vigorously growing shrubs such as privet, hollies and Ligustrum. They may need a trim to keep them inbound and away from your windows. Light pruning of the fastgrowing shoots won't harm the plant, and it will help give it a more compact shape. Save heavy pruning, however, for late winter, he added. It should. be remembered to lightly fertilize annual flowers and roses each month. Water the fertilizer in thoroughly after applying to get the benefits into the plants' root zone. If you use liquid fertilizer, read the directions carefully, and don't apply it during the heat of the day. Begin now to plan your fall landscape changes, said Westerfield. "Many catalogs require you to order now for a fall shipment;' he said. "Look at the success of your existing landscape and ask yourself if you're happy with the arrangement, spacing and color." "Draw out what changes you'll make and begin to check on the availability of plants for this fall;' he said. "Fall is the ideal time to plant most of our landscape plants." When you need to apply chemicals, do it either very early or very late in the day to avoid bum on the foliage from hot temperatures. If weeds have been a problem in the flowerbeds, hand removal may be the best The demand for water normally increases during the summer months, but with scarce rainfall in many areas of the state, it is particularly important to use this important resource wisely. Following are some suggestions that will enable you to conserve this resource while providing your plants with the water they need. *Water only when it is necessary. Wait until your lawn and shrubs show signs of stress before you water. When stressed due to lack of water, lawns will tum a dull bluish green and the new growth on shrubs will wilt. *Apply three to five inches of mulch material, such as pine straw, leaves or pine bark, to help retain soil moisture. bark nuggets, will trap moisture in the soil better than coarsely textured materials. *Water only those plants that need water. Some plants, such as junipers and hollies, can survive for weeks without extra water once they are established, whereas other plants will need water more frequently. Keep this in mind when planning a landscape. By grouping plants with similar water needs together, you can water more conservatively and efficiently. *Use less fertilizer to reduce water needs. Fertilization promotes plant growth, which in tum increases water needs. If you cut back on the amount of fertilizer and the frequency of (Continued on Page 12) Fine-textured mulches, such as mini- application, you will lessen new water- demanding growth.
