Prepare seedbeds so that rains will settle the rows and make it easier for seeds to germinate when they are planted. Plant garlic in August for harvest early next summer.. Since garlic will be in the ground for a long period, plant it where it will not interfere with other vegetables. Select a location that has full sun, and set the garlic cloves four to six inches apart. Foliage will appear in the fall and remain through the winter. The garlic will be ready for harvesting when the leaves begin.to yellow. August is a good time to have your soil tested. If the test results indicate your soil needs lime to decrease the acidity, plan to apply it by early fall. Lime takes time to break down into the soil. If you till it in after your summer garden is harvested, the soil will be .ready in time for spring planting. When you purchase lime, remember that the safest form for garden use is ground limestone. Cut faded blooms from roses to prevent the plant from producing hips, which are the fruit of the rose containing the seeds, and remove any hips that already have formed. Doing so will allow the plant to expend its energy in producing new flowers rather than seeds. Be sure to continue regular fungicide sprays this month, and fertilize each plant with one-fourth to one-half cup of 5-10-5 or other formulation designed for roses. Apple harvest in Georgia traditionally lasts from late July until early- to mid-October. Ii you have apple trees of your own, you can tell when the fruit is ready by noting the change in skin color and how easily it is removed from the tree. When apple are ripe, both red and yellow selections lose their greeni h cast on the side facing the ground. On ripe apples, the stem will separate easi ly from the spur when you gently twist the fruit in an upward direction. (The spur is the short twig to which the fruit is attached.) - Harvest pods of okra when they are three to four inches long. Okra matures rapidly so make it a point to check your crop at least every other day. If you do not get to harvest the crop for a few days, remove any oversize pods or the plants will stop producing. When you harvest okra, cut the pods off rather than pulling them; pulling may damage the plants and bruise the pods. Greenhouse Giveaway During August the DeKalb School System's Fernbank Science Center greenhouse will feature Hilianthus spp. "Sunflowers." While supplies last, each visitor may take a plant home.
