To control the fungus, get rid of the insects by spraying with an appropriate pesticide for use on these plants. To revitalize petunias, cut the plants back several inches after the first bloom. This will help foster repeated blooms. If you cut the plants back periodically throughout the summer, they. should remain attractive well into the fall, provided you keep them well-watered and fertilized. If you use sawdust or manure in your garden, make sure it is aged. Fresh manure can bum your plants and, unless it is composted, it may introduce weed seeds into your garden. Fresh sawdust robs soil of nitrogen, which may in tum deprive your crops of this nutrient. Soak clay pots in water for a few minutes before repotting your plants. This prevents the clay from absorbing moisture from the potting soil. Free Mulch Available At DeKalb Co. Sites In the aftermath of the recent tornado, the DeKalb County, Ga. Sanitation Department has stockpiled mulch from thousands of ground-up fallen trees. This free mulch in the form of wood chips is available at three sites: Memorial Drive at 1-285, Seminole Landfill in south DeKalb County, and a new site at Brook Run in Dunwoody. Natural mulch is good cover for gardens. It combats weeds, nourishes the soil as it decomposes, helps the soil to hold moisture and protects plants by keeping the soil temperature consistent. For more information or directions to the sites, call the DeKalb County Extension Service at (404) 371-2821. Lonnie Preston, 80, of Bowdon, Ga., recently grew these pumpkins (82 and 54 pounds) and turnips (one pound and more). Preston has been a farmer all his life and still loves to work in the garden. If termites do not find the bait, they will not be affected by it. *If other pesticides contaminate bait or otherwise make unacceptable, the termites may not consume it. *Some baits are dose dependent (the more bait the termite consumes, the quicker it will die). If termites die in or very near the bait station, other termites may be repelled. *Requires frequent monitoring of the bait stqtion; however, checking stations too often may ca,use termites to stop feeding in (Continued on Page 11) disease-free horses are sold. All livestock markets and livestock dealers are required by law to be licensed by the department. No license is issued until the market or dealer acquires appropriate bond coverage. The annual volume of business by the market or dealer determines the amount of bond coverage. The bonds are held by the department in the event of claim against a bond the department determines appropriate actions. The department audits livestock markets and livestock dealers on a regular basis to verify their financial stability and to ensure that payment for livestock is made with a sufficient check. The department also verifies that payment for livestock is being made according to the law. All non-sufficient fund checks are to be reported to the department and in turn the department notifies all livestock markets. In addition, the department audits verify that livestock markets and livestock dealers are maintaining proper records. The department takes these steps to help protect the financial interests of Georgia producers. Along with established livestock sales events, on-farm sales are required to have a permit from the department and to have an Inspector present to check animals for visible symptoms of disease. Prior to the sale, farmers must request a permit from the state veterinarian. This regulation also applies to cattle, sheep, hogs and other livestock shown at state fairs, 4-H events, etc. FarIDers'l\farket Set in Acworth Farmers and gardeners are needed for the upcoming Acworth Farmers' Market scheduled to be held every Friday from 7 a.m. to 12 noon beginning June 12. This responsibility is carried out through the enforcement of laws and regulations for the surveillance, eradication and prevention of diseases such as tuberculosis, pseudorabies and brucellosis in livestock; Equine fufectious Anemia in horses, mules or other equines; and through the licensing and bonding of livestock markets, dealers The Georgia Department of Agriculture recently named the dairy farm of Charles and Richard Stewart as 1997 Grade A Dairy of the Year. To be selected as dairy of the .year, a farm must meet stringent criteria for demonstrating the cleanliness and safety of its operation. The dairy received a perfect barn score and a score of 100 on all of the department's inspections for the year. In addition the facility had the lowest readable bacteria count and the lowest average somati; cell count of any dairy in the state during 1997. The owner-operato..S received a sign from the Georgia Milk Producers Inc. that recognizes the dairy for its accomplishment. Pictured above are (left-right): Milton Stewart, father of Charles and Richard and the original owner-operator of the dairy; Charles Stewart; Bill Moore, executive director, Georgia Milk Producers Inc.; and Richard Stewart. and packer/buyers. All test-eligible cattle and swine at the state's livestock markets are tested for brucellosis, and all test-eligible swine are tested for pseudorabies. A veterinarian is assigned to all commercial livestock markets to assure that only healthy animals are offered for sale and take blood samples for disease testing. The vets often provide other services such as perfonning. pregnancy tests, vaccinations, and issuing Termite Baits Now Available for Homeowners certificates of veterinary inspection for the interstate shipment of animals. Due to its climate and soil conditions, the Southeast has some of the highest tennite populations in the country. In fact, most homes in Georgia will have one or more tennite colonies feeding in the area. These tennites, when feeding on fallen trees and stumps, are considered beneficial. It is only when they attack homes that they become a problem. Each of these methods has its advantages and disadvantages. The selection of bait versus conventional barrier treatment, or a combination of the two methods, will depend largely upon the preferences of the homeowner. Following is a listing of the advantages and (Continued on Page 12) Inspectors perform the blood tests at the livestock markets, and forward the samples to the department's state laboratory for confirmation and further testing, if necessary. The veterinarian and the inspector also check for visible signs of other diseases such as cancer eye in cattle, fevers in horses or pneumonia in hogs. Such animals are prevented "If tennites are present in your yard, such as in a stump, it does not mean that tpere are tennites in your home;' noted. Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin. "It does show, however, that About the Deparlment: Administration Division Provides Consumer Services, Other Support tennites are in the area, and that is why it is important to maintain a complete annual inspection program on your home." The conventional theory of tennite control involves establishing a chemical barrier in the soil that tennites either cannot or will not penetrate. Recently, several termite baits have become available for use by both the professional pest control operator and the homeowner. The theory of baits is to combine a delayed-action insecticide with a palatable food for the tennites (usually sawdust or cardboard). The bait is then placed in a container or station and installed either below the soil or attached to an active feeding site. As the tennites feed on the bait, and spread it throughout the colony, the population of the colony will be reduced, perhaps even eliminating the colony. A focal point of the Georgia Department of Agriculture is the Administration Division, which provides support services to all other divisions. In addition to these functions are public outreach services mainly extended by _the Public Affairs Office, which includes the Press Office, Consumer Services, and the "Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin." Other services include those _ performed by the offices of Accounting, . Budget, Personnel and Information .Technology. The Consumer Services Office maintains the department's toll-free Ag Consumer Line, as its staff fields more than 3,000 calls 'per month from Georgians requesting pamphlets, recipes and other educational materials on agriculture-related topics. Consumer complaints regarding businesses regulated by the department are forwarded by the Public Affairs Office to the appropriate departmental division for assistance and investigation. Consumers are informed of their rights and responsibilities in the marketplace and are given tips on becoming better shoppers during the many public presentations made by the Public Affairs staff to civic, school and cultural organizations each year. One of the most visible assets of the Administration Division is the "Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin." With more than 240,000 subscribers, this .free, weekly tabloid meets the informational needs of both the farmer and consumer. The Bulletin (Continued on Page 12) from unloading to keep them away from other animals. All cattle of breeding age that are sold by public auction are tested for brucellosis. At feeder pig sales, hogs are tested for brucellosis and pseudorabies. These tests are designed to prevent infected animals from returning to the farm. When brucellosis or pseudorabies is detected, the herd from which the animal originated is placed under quarantine and an intensive testing program is begun to detennine the extent of the disease and desired methods for eradication. Horses must be tested for Equine Infectious Anemia prior to being comingled with horses owned by another individual or prior to changing owners..A blood sample is collected by a veterinarian and forwarded to one of the officially approved labs in the state. A negative coggins test for Equine fufectious Anemia within the last 12 months is required on all equine offered for sale, sold, traded, given away, . changing owners. In addition, all equine assembled for exhibition, rodeos, trail rides or other activities also must have a current negative coggins test. Equine inspectors are present at each public auction to insure that only healthy, (Continued on Page 12) Cattle Celebration Scheduled in Ga. For Brucellosis Free Status In April of this year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture published an interim rule in the Federal Register declaring Georgia Class Free for cattle brucellosis. To celebrate this milestone, the Georgia Department of Agriculture will sponsor a celebration of Georgia's cattle brucellosis free status Friday, June 12 at the Macon Farmers' Market, 2055 Eisenhower Parkway, Macon. Ga. The program will begin at 2 p.m. with remarks and presentations from Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, leaders of the Georgia General Assembly, and several state and federal livestock leaders.
