Page 12 May Garden Chores , Do not remove foliage from bulbs prematurely; doing so will weaken the plants. Allow the foliage to wither naturally. If you are anxious to bring color back to your garden, you can over plant bulb beds with annual flowers. Whether you plant seeds or transplants, do not injure the bulbs while planting. If you have planted blueberries this spring, remove the flowers from the plants. This will eliminate your first crop of berries, but your plants will have increased vigor in future years. Also, be sure to mulch newly planted blueberries to insulate the shallow roots from heat and drought. Slugs are damaging to vegetables and flowers, particularly transplants. If you find you have a problem with slugs, the following is an easy way to control them without using pesticides. Slugs are attracted to beer and you can use it to attract and capture them. Use a container, such as a coffee can or whipped~margarine container, that has a fitted lid. Set the container in the soil near the plants so that the top is flush with the ground. Next, fill the container with an inch or more of beer. Cut a two or three inch hole in the lid and put the lid on the container. The hole will allow the slugs to crawl in, but it will keep pets or other animals from finding the beer before the slugs. Each morning, check the containers and dispose of any drowned slugs. If the beer becomes diluted by rain or irrigation water, you will need to replace it; otherwise, replace it about every three days. If you have apple and peach trees, they will naturally drop some fruit early in the growing season. Yet you may need to thin the remaining fruit to prevent the weight of a heavy crop from damaging the trees. Another benefit of thinning is that the fruit left on the tree will grow larger. When thinning, leave six to seven inches between each fruit on the limb. If there is a cluster of fruit on a limb, remove all but the largest and best-shaped fruit. The appearance of an orange powdery material on the trunk and limbs of pine trees is evidence of fusiform rust (canker). If your pine trees show signs of canker, remove any small limbs affected to prevent the spread of the disease into the trunk. Replace any small trees if the main trunk is affected. Ga. Farm Tours Offer Look at Farm Life With only about two percent of the nation's population living on farms, it is no wonder that many children and adults never experience life on a farm. Fortunately, some farmers are willing to allow schools and other organizations to tour their farms to obtain a first-hand look at daily farm life. For instance, several Georgia dairies provide tours of their farms and milking facilities so visitors can see how milk is produced before it is processed and shipped to their local retail outlet. Ifthe idea of a dairy farm tour appeals to you, contact one of the following dairy farmers for more information on possible tours: Cagle's Dairy Inc., Canton, 770-3455591 Ray Haynes, Gainesville, 770-983-3352 Don Jackson, Cartersville, 770-3864399 Donald or Douglas Newberry, Macon, 912-7~1-9089 Ricky Williams, Baxley, 912-367-4598 Marvin Wtlson, Forsyth, 912-994-5205, 912-994-1727 Ann Sorrells of Cumming, Ga. shows off her Riviera bulb that bloomed with no soil. Without irrigation, roots will grow deeper and extend two to three times their canopy spread exploring for water and nutrients." Some herbaceous perennials actually prefer dry soils, such as purple coneflower, a plant native to the arid regions of the western United States. When irrigated, it tends to grow gangly, flop over and get powdery mildew disease. Without extra water, it thrives. Rudbeckia hirta is another great plant for a nonirrigated site. Even if it were to die during a long drought, it usually throws enough seed each year to provide many happy returns. Irrigating day lilies is a waste of time and water. It will only encourage aphids and spider mites. Perhaps only plastic plants are more drought-tolerant than ornamental grasses, Wade said. Maiden grass, fountain grass and pampas grass are drought-tolerant machines. Their leaves may curl and tum bluish during drought, but they bounce right back with the first raindrops. "It's foolish to irrigate these plants," Wade said. "Although some plants are more waterefficient than others, plants alone don't save water," he added. "It's up to each of us. Our water resources are limited. If we'11 all be more conservative, summer water rationing and bans on outdoor watering don't have to happen." Hand-watering container plants and annual flowerbeds will use less water than sprillkler irrigation. If you water in late evening or early morning, less water will Attention Advertisers Advertisers, when calling to cancel, correct or inquire about your advertisement, please ask for the person who is responsible for the respective ad category. And mulching plants will keep the soil moist during dry times. If you're irrigating more than 10 percent of your landscape, maybe it's time to redesign it or change your watering habits. Through careful plant selection, siting plants right (as in sun or shade) and knowing plants' water needs, most people can cut their water use by 30 percent to 50 percent without sacrificing the quality or beauty of their landscape. Having twice the landscape for half the water is a goal anyone can reach by lea:rning simple ways to. make every drop count. Egg Safety Important in Georgia When stored and prepared properly, eggs are some of the safest, most nutrient dense foods around, according to the Georgia Egg Commission. With all the recent concerns about food borne illnesses, how can you be sure you are preparing the freshest, safest egg possible? The state of Georgia has laws and regulations governing the grading, packing, washing and dating of all eggs. Of importance is the state law, which requires eggs to be refrigerated at 45 degrees F or lower from the day they are packed until sold for their final use. To maintain this freshness, eggs should be refrigerated after purchase as soon as possible. For your assurance of freshness and quality, egg cartons are stamped with several bits of information: the packing plant number, as certified by state or federal agencies; the pack date (shown as the Julian. date); and either an "EXP" or "SELL BY" date (no more than 30 days from the pack date). When refrigerated properly, eggs will keep for at least three to four weeks beyond the expiration, or sell by date, shown on the end of the carton. Eggs, cooked or raw, should not be left at room temperature longer than two hours. Refrigeration will almost completely stop bacteria growth should there be any present. Before using your eggs, check them to make sure that none are cracked, broken, or leaking. If so, they should be discarded. As eggs get older, they lose some of their properties, but if properly stored, eggs are more likely to evaporate before they will spoil. When cooking eggs, heat them to a temperatureof atleast 160 degrees F, and reheat all egg leftovers thoroughly before serving. This will destroy any harmful bacteria. Many recipes call for raw eggs; however, for full safety, it's best to cook both yolks and whites used in the recipe. Done correctly, this will not affect the taste of the recipe. In recognition of May as Egg Month in Georgia, the Georgia Egg Commission has developed several information pamphlets on the safe handling of eggs, as well as a method for pasteurizing eggs in recipes calling for raw or lightly cooked eggs. For your free material, send a selfaddressed, stamped envelope to Egg Safety. Can I still use them or should I throw them away? Yes, you can use them, but some of the potato will be wasted. Just break or cut off the sprouts. It is recommended that you peel all of a sprouted potato before cooking. Potatoes should be stored in a cool, humid (but not wet), dark place that is well ventilated. The ideal storage temperatures are 45-50 degrees F. Under these conditions, they will keep well for several weeks. Warmer temperatures encourage sprouting and shriveling. Avoid prolonged exposure to light, which causes the spuds to turn green and taste bitter. They should not be refrigerated, because temperatures below 40 degrees F will cause an increase in sugars, which will change the taste and cause the potatoes to darken when cooked. *** I have read that regular noodles contain no cholesterol. Is this also true for egg noodles? No, it is not. -Regular pasta (noodles, spaghetti, etc.) is made from wheat flour and water and contains no cholesterol. Cooked egg noodles have about 50 mg. of cholesterol per cup. Egg noodles also contain a little more protein, iron, magnesium and other vitamins and minerals than regular noodles. Department of Agriculture Monitors Pesticides Residues ,"The tllJ:Ougp(} prodcers acr~~ge;1 l3 sl Ornamentals Hurt By Too Much Rain Abundant rainfall throughout most of Georgia this spring has landscapes growing like gangbusters, but unfortunately, too much rain in some areas has raised havoc with newlytransplanted ornamentals, according to Gary Wade, Extension Service horticulturist with the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Junipers, in particular, have taken a beating. Junipers are extremely droughttolerant once they're established. But they can't stand excessively wet soils for . a long time. Too much water can lead to the longterm decline or death of landscape plants. In fact, more plants are killed each year in Georgia from too much water than from too little. Most well-established woody ornamental trees and shrubs can survive weeks without rain or irrigation," Wade said. "Light, frequent watering simply encourages root systems to grow near the soil surface. That makes them more (Continued on Page 12) The Georgia Department of Agriculture, through its Entomology and Pesticide Division, plays an important part in assuring that crops in the sate are free form harmful pesticide residues. The Department's pesticide residue laboratory tests nearly 700 samples of agricultural products each year, and only 1.0 percent were out of tolerance for the year ending June 30, 1998. The federal Food and Drug Administration sets tolerance levels on agricultural chemicals, and updates their requirements once a month. If a farmer's crop is tested and pesticide residues are above established tolerance levels, he may be able to solve the problem by leaving the crop in the field a few more days. In most cases, rain and heat act quickly to dissipate the pesticide. By the time a Department inspector takes a sample for~ second test, the pesticide residue level usually will be completely dissipated or at least be well below the established tolerance level. The Department's pesticide residue chemists are highly trained professionals who follow established scientific procedures for detecting residue. Today, through complicated testing procedures, Summer Equine Edition Scheduled for July 1 The Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin special summer equine edition is scheduled for July 1. This issue will include notices for horse shows and events in July, August, and September as well as listings of horses at stud, boarding facilities and ads for miscellaneous equine equipment and supplies. A 30-word limit will be observed for these notices. Deadline for the edition is June 10. Notices included in the "Equine for Sale" category and "At Stud" column must be accompanied by a copy of a valid, negative Coggins test (made within the past 12 months); otherwise, they will not be published. In addition, the Georgia Animal Protection Act requires boarding and breeding facilities to be licensed. Current license number must be submitted with notices for "At Stud" and "Boarding Facilities." Notices submitted without this information will not be published. The most frequently tested products are vegetables, fruit and milk, but lab personnel regularly test samples of meat, fish, animal feed, soil and water. There are even organ and tissue samples from both humans and animals from time to time, and samples are received from outside sources such as the Georgia: Forestry Commission, state crime laboratory, the Georgia Department of Human Resources, and the state Department of Natural Resom:ces. "Pesticides have become an integral part of agriculture and food processing, thereby making .them an integral part of our total society," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "When used properly, pesticides can be extremely beneficial. Used improperly, they can be dangerous, and that's why we think it is essential to monitor residues in our labs." UGA Scientists Detail Coastal Studies June 2 If you live in the Georgia Coastal Plain and want to learn about your own yard and garden, you might want to make your way to Savannah June 2. The Coastal Cultivars Field Day will be from ~ a.m. to 4 p.m. at the University of Georgia Bamboo Farm and Coastal Gardens. The field day is free, and visitors will be able see research projects and talk with UGA scientists. "The ,projects evaluate how well ornamental, fruit and vegetable cultivars adapt to coastal Georgia,'' said Wayne McLaurin, a UGA horticulturalist. 'These projects aren't brought from Athens or anywhere else. The results are applicable to the Coastal Plain area." The UGA scientists will discuss new products for the region, and commercial production of the plants. "The farm is open all the time," McLaurin said. "But the field day will be good to come in and talk one-on-one with the scientists." A grant from the U.S~ Department of Agriculture funds the current research. Scientists have research in horticulture, plant pathology, crop and soil science and entomology at the farm. The topics include onion variety trials, insect populations, herb evaluations and bedding plants. To learn more about the field day, call (912) 921-5460.
