Page 12 Grandpa's Garden Seeds of cool weather vegetables, such as collards, kale, turnips, radishes, carrots and spinach can be planted now. This also is the time to set out transplants of broccoli and cauliflower. Start seeds of tomatoes and peppers indoors and transplant them outdoors after the last frost. If you plan to include herbs in your garden, begin sowing seeds of dill, chives and coriander. All types of ornamental trees and shrubs can be planted this month. These can be purchased in containers, or as balled-and-burlapped or bare-root stock. Bulbs such as crocus, daffodils, Dutch iris, hyacinths and tulips can still be planted if you do so before the end of the month. Look for tree seedlings that may begin appearing in bedded areas. Pull these seedlings up now before the roots become too deep Foot Disease (Continued from Page 1) length, or dry conditions. The sides of a crack usually will not join together to heal so the crack must be immobilized by screws, bar shoes, shoe clips, lacing or plastics until it grows out, Heusner said. Navicular disease is the name given to pain in the area of the navicular bone. It may involve inflammation of the navicular bursa, ligament sprains, cartilage or tendon destruction, and bone changes. Signs of navicular disease include pointing of the toe of the afflicted foot with the heel off the ground. Changes often oc-cur in the shape of the foot with the heel contracting. The horse takes shorter steps when both front feet are affected. This disease often is treated with a bar shoe and heel support to prevent strain on the tendons on the back of the leg and relieve pressure on the heel area to improve circulation of the navicular bone and surrounding area. In severe cases, nerving may be recommended. Navicular disease is most often seen in horses that have small feet for their body size. Lack of conditioning for the work performed also is a contributing factor. This disease has become a common condition of stabled horses used occasionally for strenuous athletic activity. J.W. Clapp of Atlanta, Ga., certainly knows what it takes to grow yellow straight neck squash, as can be seen by this plant which measured 16 feet long. Mr. Clapp grew 16 plants that produced 145 pounds of squash in his backyard. THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday January 14, 1998 Department Sets Contest For Agriculture Day '98 Sam Boyd of Augusta, Ga., grew this 26-pound cantaloupe in a garden plot where emus were kept a year earlier. He used no other fertilizer on the plot, and also had a plentiful supply of other vegetables. F111t FlllUlt F~ Health, Safety Day Scheduled in NE Ga. Farmers and their families in-the Northeast Georgia area are invited to attend a Farm Family Health and Safety Day Saturday, Jan. 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chicopee woods Agriculture Center in Gainesville. Agribusiness is the largest industry in the state, and farming and farm life pre- sent many safety and health risks. According to the event sponsors, the Georgia Healthy Farmers Program, farm- ing is _consistently the number one or number two most dangerous occupation with more deaths occurring in farming than in any other occupation. Since the family lives and works in the same environment, the entire family is exposed to many of the same hazards as the farmer who may be so busy taking care of his crops, animals, and equipment that taking time for a physical examina- tion is low on the priority list. In response to these issues, the Farm Family Health and Safety day is designed to offer one-stop health -screenings and safety/health information to farm fami- lies. Over 25 health and safety exhibits will provide information to help families improve their health and make their farms safer places to live and work. Free_ or reduced cost health screenings will include a blood test for sugar, cholesterol, and prostate cancer; blood pressure; height, weight, vision (including glauco- ma), and hearing; a lung function mea- -surement; a mammogram; and a pap smear. There may be a minimum charge to cover the cost of some tests. For more information, call Barbara Saxton at (770) 532-6808. TENDER BARK The aim of tree-wrapping is to keep the trunk from heating unevenly on sunny winter days. That's important for young, tender-barked trees like fruit trees, according to the University of Georgia Extension Service. Bark tends to split as it cools fast after the winter sun has warmed the south and west sides. Use commercial tree wraps or put up canvas or burlap screens to shade young fruit trees. Even a plank leaned against the south side of the trunk will help. Orchard owners paint trunks with white latex paint for the same purpose March 20 is Agriculture Day in Georgia. To highlight the vital contributions farmers and agribusinesses make to our state and nation, the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Agriculture in the Classroom Council, Inc., are sponsoring an essay and photo/art contest for Georgia students. The theme, "My Hometown and its Contributions to Georgia's Agricultural Industry," has been adopted to honor the farmers and agribusinesses in your community. The contest has two primary categories -written and visual art. The written category is open to students in grades 4-8 and 9-12, while the visual art category is open to all age groups and includes both photos and artwork. It should never be used as kitchen countertops or food cutting boards. Also, treated wood should not be used for those portions of beehive structures that come in:to contact with the honey or in structures and containers for storing silage. I use liquid propane (LP) gas to heat my home. How can I be sure that my gas company is treating me fairly? *** LP gas is sold by volume or weight. Typically, it is sold by volume if the fuel is purchased in large quantities for borne heating use. When the fuel is delivered to your home, the seller must give you a "delivery ticket" showing the name and address of the buyer and the seller. It also must include the delivery date, the amount, the unit price and type of fuel delivered. "Amoco, Texaco and QuikTrip have all done a fine job of cooperating with the Department in resolving this matter, and all the pumps that were a part of the consent orders are now operating properly," Commissioner Irvin said. The malfunctioning pumps were a result of mechanical errors on the part of companies responsible for calibrating the oil stations' gas pumps, and at no time were the stations in question intentionally defrauding customers, Commissioner Irvin continued. Foot Disease May Cause_ Severe Lameness in Equine Most lameness in equine is due to foot injury or disease, according to Gary Heusner, equine specialist with the Georgia Extension Ser\rice. These prob- lems can become severe with owner neglect. . A horse's foot includes the hoof, tis- sues, and bones, and foot disease may involve any of the structures that com- . prise the foot. "There are many foot ail- ments from thrush, generally considered the least severe, to larninitis, the most severe foot ailment," Heusner said. Thrush is the destruction of the frog by anaerobic bacteria, and the infection usu- ally is black and strong smelling. Dirty, wet feet and long untrimmed feet are ideal conditions for growth of the bacteria causing thrush, which can be stopped by removing affected tissue and cleaning out. the foot once a day to expose it to air. Heusner said that equine sole bruises, .comparable to nail or bone bruises in humans, are caused by concussion to the sole. Injury can be caused by rocks, grav- el, or other hard objects, as well as improper shoeing. It's recommended that a horse with a bruised sole should be shod and protected with pads. An abscess is a pus pocket or infection of the sensitive structures of the foot most commonly occurring in the sole or white line area of the hoof. An abscess, which can be compared to a boil or festered wound in humans, may result from thrush, sole bruises, larninitis, or puncture wounds. The absces~ will follow the path of least resistance until it breaks out and drains, sometimes at the coronary band. To treat an abscess, it should be opened and allowed to drain and dry up. "Soaking the abscessed foot in Epson salts helps to promote drainage," Heusner said. "A germicide should be applied to the affected area to help kill bacteria and dry the wound." The area should then be packed with a poultice to encourage drainage. Heusner added that an abscess. can cause a horse intense pain and severe lameness. A Sand Crack, also called a toe or quarter crack depending on location, is a vertical crack in the hoof wall which may be superficial and insignificant or deep and serious, causing intense pain. Sand cracks pinch when the foot bears weight, w.hile quarter cracks hurt most when the foot is raised. Sand cracks may develop because of uneven weight-bearing, irregular hoof growth, injury, excessive hoof (Continued on Page 12) Copyright 1998 ag consumer line. Does irradiated food glow in the dark? No, irradiated food does not glow in the dark and it is not radioactive. Although many people may associate irradiation with atomic bombs and nuclear reactors, irradiation is dangerous only to the bacteria that contaminate food. Irradiating food to prevent illness from food-borne bacteria is not new. The Food and Drug Administration has allowed the irradi.ation of some food products and spices to curb insects and microorganisms since 1963. It also has been used to control parasit~ contamination in pork and retard spoilage in fruits and vegetables. *** My husband and I are doing some of the finishing touches on the interior of our new home.
