Scott McDaniel Barnesville 770-3580640 Page 12 Grondpa's Garden You inay want to keep a record of your gardening successes and failures to help you with your future gardens. Such information can help you avoid or prevent problems as well as remind you of successful techniques and plant varieties. If your azaleas need pruning in order to reduce their size, wait until after they bloom. Do not shear azaleas, as this will ruin their natural loose, tiered form. Prune the tallest stems at their point of origin. After flowering, azaleas experience a spurt of growth, thus making it a good time to fertilize. If the soil is alkaline you will need to apply an acid-forming fertilizer made especially for azaleas and camellias; otherwise; any balanced formulation, such as 12-6-6, will be adequate. Apply about one-quarter cup of fertilizer per square yard of bed and water the plants well. If azalea foliage is yellow after fertilizing, it is a sign that the plants may need iron. The soil may be lacking in iron but often the soil is simply too alkaline for iron to be absorbed by the plant roots. To correct this problem, you can lower the pH of the soil with iron sulfate. You also can solve the problem quickly by spraying the foliage with iron chelate, but this is only a temporary solution. Weeds can make your garden look unattractive and they compete with vegetables, flowers and shrubs for water and fertilizer. If you do not control weeds early and their seeds are allowed to spread, you will soon have a big weed problem. Mulch is effective in controlling weeds because it shades the soil and keeps most of the weed seed from germinating. Even if some weeds sprout from the mulch, they can be easily pulled. If. you do not use mulch, you can use a pre-emergence herbicide that will kill the weeds as they germinate. Remember to check the product label to make certain that the herbicide is recommended for the plants in your garden. If you do not want to mulch or use a herbicide, you will have to resort to cultivating with a hoe or else learn to live with the weeds. Robert Bailey of Rome, Ga., shows off one of his tomato plants that stood over 12 feet high. He had three plants this tall growing in his home garden. THE MARKET BULLETIN Jeannette Hughes of Savannah, Ga., grew this poinsettia in her backyard. The plant measured 45 inches tall and was over 68 inches wide. It originally was a two-foot-tall plant. Elephant Garlic (Continued from Page 1) and other produce crops, thus allowing farmers to extend their marketing season. Several major companies have expressed interest in his operation, Dasher said, and he will be shipping samples for them to inspect the quality of his crop. According to Dasher, most U.S. garlic is produced in California, but it would be good to have a source for the product on the East Coast. "I am pleased to see farmers such as Shad Dasher experimenting with alternative crops and looking for ways to further diversify their operations," said Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "With our state's long growing season and relatively mild climate conditions, Georgia farmers have the potential of producing a wide variety of crops that meet or exceed the quality of those produced anywhere in the country." Greenhouse Business Focus of Confetence If you are interested in starting a greenhouse business, but don't know where to start, the Cooperative Extension Service invites you to attend an intensive one-day training on "Starting a Greenhouse Business." This will be the first multi-state greenhouse start-up training program ever held in this region. The program will cover: developing a business plan, financing a new business, determining market needs, greenhouse selection and equipment, among other topics. "Starting a Greenhouse Business" will be a seven-state regional training program held June 25 at the Palmetto Center in Greenville, S.C., in conjunction with the 1998 Southeast Greenhouse Conference. Each school participant will receive a copy of the extensive 300-plus page "Virginia Greenhouse Growers Certification Manual" and Georgia's "Starting a Greenhouse Business" bulletin. School participants also will receive a free pass onto the Southeast Greenhouse Trade Show floor, featuring hundreds of suppliers and vendors. An extensive daylong tour of hightech greenhouses and garden centers in North Carolina also will be available to interested clients on June 24. Participants also will have the option of attending the three-day extensive training for professional growers provided by The Southeast Greenhouse Conference Program. You do not have to currently own a greenhouse to register, although the fee is separate from the school. The fee for the school is $150. The registration deadline is June 1, 1998. After June 1, the fee is $175. For more information, call Charles Hall at (800) 453-3070. Pecans Come Out of Their Shell Pecans are a commodity that we have grown up with in Georgia; they have been a part of our everyday meals since childhood. People in other parts of the world have been missing out on this wonderful southern product and the Commodity Commission for Pecans wants to try to change that. The Commodity Commission has been in existence for three years. Since that time the commission has grown into a very active commodity commission, serving the pecan industry in numerous ways~ Through a grower paid assessment from growers with 30 acres or more, the group has been able to make great strides in . making consumers and food experts aware that "Georgia is the Pecan Capital of the World." This program alone has reached over 300 million people in a positive way. Our guest columnist this week is Buddy Leger, Chainnan, Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Pecans, P.O. Box 686, Cordele, Ga. 31010. Food editors from across the country have learned that pecans fit into many dishes and diets, not just the traditional pecan pie, which they love so much. Georgia pecans have been featured in national media including magazines and newspapers. Many local and regional television programs also have featured pecans and the commission's new recipe. brochure. CNN also spotlighted "Georgia Pecans" on their "On the Menu" program, which is internationally televised. Two Georgia producers were interviewed on this program. The commission is funding research at the University of Georgia and the USDA Research Station in Byron. Money is being spent in the areas .of research, education, and promotion on behalf of the pecan industry in Georgia. Because we are able to fund these programs together, the Commodity Commission for Pecans is a valuable part of the success of this industry. By law, the Cpmmission must be voted on every three years by producer vote, and the balloting period has been set for May 7June 5, 1998. If you are a 30-acre or more producer, you should have received a ballot by mail just prior to May 7. If you are eligible to vote, please consider your vote carefully. If you have not received a ballot you can call the Commodities Promotion Division at (404) 656-3678 and request one. Wednesday May 13, 1998 Copyright 1998 Vidalia Onions Popular in Georgia The season for the world-famous and home-grown Vidalia onions is in full swing and available at farmers' markets and grocery stores around the state. Vidalias are sweet, yellow onions grown exclusively in a 20-county region in Georgia, but loved by consumers all over North America. Their mild, sweet taste makes Vidalia onions more versatile than onions with a stronger taste. Vidalia onions are available from late April through mid-July. The crop is planted from September through February each year, with 70,000 plants changes their texture. Fun Facts About Vidalia Onions Vidalia onions are the state vegetable of Georgia. Vidalia onions were first grown more than 60 years ago in Toombs County, Georgia by Mose Coleman. Coleman was surprised to find that the onions he planted were sweet, not hot. When Coleman's sweet onions garnered a high price, other area farmers began planting onions.
