lVIARKET BULLETIN " GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE , TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER Vol.~ No. 16 This year, Soil and Water Stewardship Week will be observed throughout the United States April 26-May 3. The theme for 1998 is "Wonders of Wildlife." Each year the theme is chosen to remind all of us of a responsibility to preserve and protect some facet of our natural resources. "Wonders of Wildlife" is very appropriate for the situation we find ourselves in today. Our lives, like the lives of our wildlife, do indeed depend on the condition of our soil and water resources. We are blessed in Georgia with ample rainfall and remarkable , aquifers across the coastal plains. In North Georgia, we can find necessary supplies b~ not in such great quantItIes. Now, however, we know that poor stewardship in one small area can ruin even a giant aquifer for human use. North Georgia wells are very susceptible to pollution from chemicals and nutrients. Our guest columnist this week is Sam Rigdon, President, The Georgia Association of Conservation District Supervisors, P.O. Box 8024, Athens, Ga. 30603. ' Further, the things we do with and to the land in one part of the state can have a great effect on the recharge and availability of groundwater to communities and individuals far away from us. Soil and Water Stewardship Week reminds us that all of our soil and water resources must be properly managed for the wild animals and ourselves we so , much enjoy. We must, of course, manage these resources for our use today. We should not forget for a minute, however, that our children and grandchildren are going to live with our mistakes. It is a tenet of soil and water conservation district supervisors, who sponsor this observance, that each acre of land and water will be used according to its best capability and treated according to its needs. Toward that goal, the districts have conservation agreements on millions of acres of Georgia lands whereby land-disturbing activities will be carried out in the most protective manner. We supervisors are working hard to stop all rural and urban soil erosion wherever (Continued on Page 12) Wednesday April 22, 1998 Copyright 1998 GJu!WIg Stew.
