GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE - TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER Vol.JMj, No. 51________________ Farmers, Ranchers Urged To Participate in Census This month, the 1997 Census of Agriculture will be mailed to all Georgia farmers and ranchers. The census is the only source of uniform, comprehensive agricultural data tabulated for every coun ty in the nation, and all farmers and ranch ers should return their forms by Febraary 2, 1998. To make reporting responses easier, the forms contain questions about basic sub jects such as land use and ownership, crop acreage and quantities harvested, livestock and poultry inventories, value of crops and livestock sold, and farm operators' charac teristics. Twenty-five percent of the ques tionnaires will have questions on produc tion expenses, machinery inventories, market value of land and buildings, and income from farm-related sources. The law (Title 7, U.S. Code) requiring farm operators to answer the census also protects the privacy .of their reports. Census data may be seen only by sworn USDA employees and may be used only for statistical purposes. Confidentiahty of individual reports is protected by law, and copies retained by farmers are immune from legal processes. Results of the census will provide a clear picture of agriculture at the county, state and national levels, showing in detail how farmers and ranchers stand today as compared with five years ago. "The agricultural census is a valuable resource to farmers, farm organizations, (Continued on Page 12) Planting Coverage Increased by USDA U.S. Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman recently announced changes in crop insurance policies to provide insured farmers significantly better prevented planting coverage. The 14 crops affected by this change represent 84 percent of the 1.6 milhon crop insurance policies rein sured by the Risk Management Agency (RMA). "This announcement directly addresses the need to strengthen this key section of the agricultural safety net," said Glickman. "Producers, commodity orga nizations, agents and insurance companies have worked diligently with RMA to sim plify and improve prevented planting cov erage. Now, USDA will be able to pro vide better and more timely assistance to producers suffering early season losses." The changes, applicable to insured crops beginning this spring, will increase prevented planting coverage and reduce the time needed to pay a claim. I know they are related to peaches, which are a well-known product of our state. The apricot is a member of the genus Prunus, which also includes peaches, plums, nectarines, cherries and almonds. While apricots are related to peaches, they are not as well suited to our climate. Apricots bloom very early, and our extreme win ter temperature fluctuations may cause total bud loss. The buds that survive the winter weather may still be destroyed by a spring frost. Also, the fruit is highly sus ceptible to brown rot. Apricots are not grown here commercially, although there are a few experimental orchards. Some people have planted a few trees in their back yards, but have not been able to harvest a sizable crop consistently, due to the above-mentioned factors. *** Farm Front Funding for the National Center for Peanut Competitiveness at the University of Georgia passed its final hurdle recently as President Bill Clinton gave his approval for funding the estab lishment of the center. "The President agreed with us and the members of Georgia's congressional delegation who worked diligently for the center's approval." said Joe Boddiford. The cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao) is a perennial evergreen that is native to the hot, humid forests of Central America and Mexico. It also is grown on the Gold Coast of Africa, where the climate is similar to that of its native habitat. It is culti vated for its fruit -- cocoa beans -- that grow inside pods that are about a foot long and red to brown in color. Cocoa was discovered by Spanish explorers who traveled to Mexico and Central America in the early 1500s. The beans were used as money in Mexico during that time, ahd a chocolate drink mixed with spices was consumed by the royalty of the Incas and Aztecs. The explorers, including Christopher Columbus, brought cocoa beans back to Spain and, from there, they were taken throughout Europe. Even the botanical name for this tree is indicative of the popularity of its fruit. "Theobroma" means "food for the gods." "The blueberry growers were worried about what to do with their excess blue berries," said Romeo Toledo, a food scien tist with the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. "Tliey want ed to find alternatives to using the berries fresh." He said they studied juices made from blueberries and dried blueberries. "Granola bars were gaining popularity, and we wanted to hit that market," Toledo said. "For the kinds of uses we envisioned -- cereals and granola bars -- dehydration was the perfect outlet." UGA scientists first treated the berries with a sugar syrup. "This draws out the water and reduces the time it takes for the berries to dry," Toledo said. "The result is a semimoist berry. PORK ROAST WITH GEORGIA PEACH SAUCE Marinate the pork ahead of time for deep rich flavor 1/4 cup soy sauce 3 tablespoons sherry 1 large clove of garlic, minced 1 teaspoon dry mustard 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon thyme 1 (3- to 4-pound) center cut pork loin roast 2/3 cup pureed peaches or peach preserves 1/4 cup chili sauce or ketchup 1 cup water, divided In small bowl combine first 6 ingredients. Marinate pork 2-3 hours or overnight in refrigerator. Reserve marinade for later use. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Roast pork for about 30 minutes per pound or until meat thermome ter reaches at least 160 degrees F. Meanwhile, in small saucepan combine reserved marinade, peach puree, chili sauce and 1/2 cup water; boil then reduce to simmer. Baste pork during last 20 minutes of cooking. After pork is cooked, add remaining 1/2 cup water to oven pan and scrape up pan juices. Add pan juices to sauce. Yields 9 servings or about 3 servings per pound. In large bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, beating well. Add vanilla wafers and milk, alternating each. Fold in pecans and coconut. Turn into a greased and floured tube pan. It is the main processor of dried blueberries. Most of the blueberries the Michigan plant uses for drying are actually Southern-grown. "The percentage of Georgia-grown berries varies from year to year," Tucker said. "But we have used up to 100 percent in our dried blueberry division." "The Southern berries process very well and give us better yields," he said. "They also retain their size well." Much of Georgia's blueberry crop is sprayed with gibberellic acid to enhance fruit set. "This has resulted in superior dried blueberries, since the berries con tain fewer seeds," Tucker said. In the spring of 1996, Georgia began drying its own blueberries when Rustan, Inc., opened in Alma, Ga. The company dries blueberries, cherries, cranberries and vegetables such as carrots, onions and potatoes. Blueberry Meeting Set Jan. 15 in Alma The 1998 Georgia Blueberry Meeting will be held Jan. 15 in Alma, Ga. The meeting, which will be held in the new Bacon County auditorium, features infor mation on new varieties, weed control, disease control, pmning and plant estab lishment. Topic presentations include: "Pruning Rabbiteyes and Southern Highbush;" "Mummy Berry Disease Life Cycle;" "What Happened in the 1997 Bloom Period;" "Thrips, Bud Mites and Gall Midges on Blueberries;" "Temperature Effects on Fruit Set;" "Bee Population Studies and Their Role in Pollination;" and "Using Plastic Mulch and Methyl Bromide in Establishing New Blueberry Plantings." The vegetables are often used for dry soup mixes. Last year, Rustan processed more than 40,000 pounds of dried blueberries, too. The berries were used in commercial bakeries and packaged trail mixes. UGA Extension Service horticulturist Gerard Krewer said about one-third of the blueberries grown in Georgia become dried blueberries. "The beauty of it is that the process uses a lot of berries," Krewer'said. "It takes about three pounds of fresh berries to make one pound of dried blueberries." Georgia blueberry growers produce six million to 13 million pounds of blue berries each year. Krewer figures the state has 4,000 acres of bearing blueber ries and about 400 acres of younger, non bearing plants. The state ranks fourth behind Michigan, New Jersey and Oregon in U.S. cultivated blueberry production. Dried blueberries, which have no fat, cholesterol or sodium, are most often used in cereal products, cake mixes, pas try products, granola bars and dried fruit mixes. Strawberry Growers Schedule 498 Meeting The 1998 Georgia Strawberry Meeting will be held Jan. 24 at the. Georgia Farm Bureau Headquarters near Macon, Ga. The meeting will feature information on strawberry growing, disease control,, insect/mite control and double cropping with vegetables. Assistance in completing census report forms is available locally from USDA offices of the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Cooperative Extension Service, and Farm Service agency staff. Anyone receiving a census report who does not operate a farm or ranch is urged to return it to avoid additional mailings. NASS to Conduct Agriculture Census For the first time, the census of agri culture is the responsibility of the National Agricultural Statistics Service, which operates as part of the United States Department of Agriculture. In pre vious years the agricultural census was conducted by the Bureau of the Census. Because of the importance of agricul ture to the nation, the USDA has placed a high priority on the census to assure its continuation and to assure that adequate resources will be available to conduct a 1997 census comparable to the 1992 cen sus. "By consolidating the experience and resources of the Agricultural Statistics Service and the Census Bureau, planning, collection and release of census results will be more efficient," said Larry Snipes, state statistician and head of the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. Previously, NASS and the Census Bureau were required to maintain sepa rate lists of farms and ranches. Now with its statistics responsibility, NASS can develop one master list that can be used both for the census and ongoing sample surveys. Other improvements in the census process are as follows: The authority for defining a farm will be with the Secretary of Agriculture instead of the Secretary of Commerce. NASS has 45 field offices serving the 50 states, which will conduct the census at the local level. By integrating expertise and resources of NASS and the Census Bureau, survey results will be released earlier and data will be more available through electronic channels (CD-ROM and Internet). In addition, the census reporting of agricul ture in outlying areas such as Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, will continue to receive support. Follow-up programs, such as the farm and ranch irri gation survey and the horticultural spe cialties census also will continue to receive support.
