This award, one of 12 presented to recepients from across the U.S., recog nizes humane efforts on behalf of animals and exceptional compassion for the wel fare of animals. Tobacco Market Sales Now Underway in Ga. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin toured the state's tobacco markets last week and reported that the market season opened favorably for Georgia farmers. After touring the Douglas, Nashville and Moultrie Markets last Tuesday, Irvin noted that the new crop of tobacco was selling about $1.50 to $1.60 per pound. Last year's stored tobacco was selling in the $1.80 to $1.85 per pound range. Irvin also toured markets in Tifton, Hahira, Blackshear, Claxton, Statesboro and Alma. The 1997 tobacco sales sea son is scheduled through November 18. Irvin noted that last year was an excel lent year for Georgia tobacco farmers and hopefully sales will continue to be good this year, but the final outcome will not be known until the end of the season. (Continued on Page 12) In 1987, Ms. Barnes was the driving force behind the formation of Humane Services, Inc., a non-profit, all-volun teer organization dedicated to educating the public about cruelty to animals, overpopulation, the human/animal bond and the relationship between animal abuse and human violence. She has worked to promote the legislation of several important animal welfare acts, including the Animal Protection Act and Georgia's mandatory sterlization law for shelter animals. Ms. Barnes is a member of the Companion Animal Advisory Board to the Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture which advises him on mat ters pertaining to the Animal Protection Act. Both of my sons have developed a rash and only one of them actually came in contact with the plant. No, the skin inflammation and blis tering that are characteristic of poison ivy and oak allergic dermatitis cannot be passed from one person to another. But, the oil toxin which causes the rash is stable for a considerable time and is most likely the source of your problem. If you have a dog or cat, your son may have developed the rash after rub bing it. Equipment, toys and clothing also can be likely sources of contami nation for months afterward. If poison ivy contact is suspected, wash the skin with cold water. Don't use warm water, as it helps oily toxin penetrate into the skin. Don't wash the exposed skin areas with soap, either, as it removes the protective skin oils and can increase penetration of the toxin. A product sold as Technu is effective in cleansing skin after exposure. I have discovered fleas in my home. What can I do to control them? The best way to prevent a flea infes tation in the house is to control fleas on your pets. Consult your veterinarian for help in selecting a method of treat ment for your animal that will suit you and your pet. After you've handled your pet's flea problem, you need to treat the house. Before treatment, vac uum all infested rooms including car pets, furniture and bedding where pets frequent. Remove the bag and dispose of it outside. Putting the vacuum bag in a plastic bag and sealing it will pre vent any larvae and adults from escap ing. Failure to remove and dispose of the vacuum bag after each treatment may result in a re-infestation. (Continued on Page 12) Ga. Businesses, corporations, dealer ships or other commercial enterpris es are not allowed to advertise in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass mar ket; handling large quantities of prod uct for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quanti ties); supported by advertisement (i.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indi cators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and hold ing regulatory licenses/permits/regis trations. The editor has the authority to des ignate the length of ads and the num ber of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BUL LETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. Each notice submitted for publi cation must be in writing, legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the cat egory and the name, mailing and street address(es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. At the end and below the text of the notice, the following statement must be included and signed by the person submitting the notice. I hereby certify that the above notice meets all the necessary requirements for pub lication in the FARMERS AND CON SUMERS MARKET BULLETIN. Items for sale or services offered in any notice must conform to all laws and regulations covering sale and movement of the same. Ads for some categories must meet certain requirements. Advertisers are advised to review requirements under ad categories before submitting their notices. Note: Due to space limitations ad guide lines cannot be listed in the BUL LETIN each week. Advertisers who have questions concerning these guidelines may call 1-800-282-5852, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday, or write: Market Bulletin, Georgia Department of Agriculture, 19 MLK Jr. Drive, Atlanta, GA 30334. Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies in writing on the notice that the ad is to be published more than one week. Ads may be published consecutively up to a max imum of four (4) weeks. A new notice must be submitted after each maxi mum 4-week period if the adver tiser wants the advertisement to continue. Ads cannot be taken via telephone. Ads are computer referenced by telephone number, so it is essential that the advertiser's telephone num ber be submitted with each ad. Advertisers who do not want a tele phone number printed in their ads should note this fact on the face of the advertisement furnished to the BULLETIN. There is a 20-word limit for adver tisements; name, town, phone num ber or name and complete address must be included in the 20-word limit. The MARKET BULLETIN reserves the right to edit notices. Georgia residents only may adver tise in the MARKET BULLETIN with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category.
