GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER Vol. SO, No. 22 $------------------------------------------------------ ~ Tobacco Losses From Vims May Be 10 Percent of Yield Georgia tobacco farmers have lost 15 to 20 percent of their tobacco plants this year due to Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus, according to Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. Loss of this many plants by this time of year could result in a 10 percent drop in yield. "The vims was first detected on tobac co in Georgia in 1986, but has never caused this degree of damage," said Commissioner Irvin. "Currently, we are unable to predict if losses will go any higher." Tomato Spotted Wilt Vims can kill young tobacco plants outright. It also can cause leaves to darken along the leaf vein. This may be on a few leaves or on the entire plant. It also may cause the leaves on part of the plant to die. The vims also can effect peppers, tomatoes, peanuts and ornamental plants. Losses to the disease are widespread throughout Georgia's tobacco production area. No treatments for prevention or con trol of the disease have been successful and nothing other than the standard good management practices currently is recom mended. The disease will cause more than just the loss of yield from the missing plants, however. It also will cause problems with fertilization, sucker control, mechanical harvesting, curing and leaf quality. Over 46,000 acres of tobacco were planted in Georgia last year. The value of the state's production was $206 mil lion. Tobacco ranks fourth among Georgia's crops after cotton, peanuts and vegetables. Cotiwt Scout Schools Set A farm practice being used these days is something .called IPM -- integrated pest management. With IPM, farmers don't just spray pesticides on a schedule, but spray only when the number of pests in their fields demand it. To make this program work, trained scouts must keep a constant eye on farm ers' fields. To train those scouts, the University of ,Georgia Extension Service conducts yearly scout schools. The 1997 Cotton Scout School will be June 7 and 16 from 9:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Rural Development Center in Tifton, Ga. Instructors include research and Extension scientists who will teach class es on cotton plant growth, insect pests, helpful insects and pathogens, scouting procedures, petiole and tissue testing, and safety precautions. Also included is a 3:30 p.m. field trip. For more information, call (912) 3863416. Wednesday May 28, 1997 Copyright 1997 Pick Your Own Fruits & Vegetables List See Pages 6-8 In Gefltflift Dates Planned For Ag Survey A major U.S. Department of Agriculture survey of the nation's agri cultural sector will be conducted during the first half of June. This nationwide survey will collect information to make state, regional, and national estimates of crop acreage, grain Stocks, livestock inventories, economic data, and other statistics. In Georgia, local interviewers will contact more than. 2,500 farmers as part of the June Agricultural Survey. Results of the sur vey will be published in a number of reports beginning a few weeks after the information is collected. The estimates are used to help farmers in their production, investment, and mar keting decisions. Gathering this type of information from producers is the only way to develop reliable crop and live stock estimates for an orderly marketing system. "We depend on the voluntary cooper ation of farmers in our sample," said Larry E. Snipes, state statistician for the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service, which will be contacting local producers for the survey between May 29 and June. "A good response will ensure that Georgia farmers are fully represented in the national picture. This survey is par ticularly vital because it will provide the first clear indications of the potential production of major commodities in1997." Producers rely on data compiled in the survey to reach production, market ing, and investment decisions, while industry analysts, Extension agents, and farm organizations use the information in a variety of ways to benefit farmers. For more information, call (800) 2534419. It's 6Pick-Your-Own Time' in Georgia Summer is just about upon us in Georgia, and that means it is the time of year for many folks to start thinking about picking their own fruits and vegetables. Pick-your-own farms are quite popular in the state, although fresh produce also is available at state farmers' markets, road side stands, grocery stores and supermar kets. If your family is planning to take a trip to a pick-your-own produce farm this year, the following tips should be consid ered before you make your visit. When picking produce, the quality of any fruit or vegetable will be better if it's picked in the morning when they're fresh and before they loose moisture by the end of the day. In addition, wait until the dew has evaporated before picking so the foliage is dry, thus preventing the spread of any diseases to other healthy plants in your garden. After harvesting your pro duce, place them in a cool place so they won't overheat. Another tip: The darker the produce the better nutritional value it will have. For example, dark green lettuce leaves contain more nutrients than the lighter inner leaves. - It is recommended to pick only as much fresh produce as you can eat in a few days. After being picked, fruits and vegetables start to lose Vitamins A and C. Also, the natural sugar in vegetables like com, peas and green beans begins to turn into starch. Prolonging the life and nutritional value of fresh produce can be accom plished by wrapping it in plastic and stor ing in the refrigerator or other cool, dark, dry places. The longer that fruits and vegetables are in contact with water, the more watersoluble nutrients, such as Vitamin C, are lost. Wait until right before preparation to wash fmits and vegetables. Farm Front The first forecast ot Georgia's 1997 wheat crop shows expected yields a\eraging 40 bushels per acre, according to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Sets ice. It this holds line, this yeat's yield would be eight bushels below last vear. but two bushels more than in A sample of growers contacted in early May indicated dry weather during April and above niumal insect popula tions base reduced potential yields. Gounls Extension agents rated crop conditions recently as 14 percent poor to very poor, 43 percent fair and 43 per cent good to excellent. A mild xx inter and xxarm temperatures in Marh pushed development about a week ahead ot normal. Harvest is like wise expected to begin about a week earlier than usual. An estimated 350.000 acres xxill be harxested for grain, the same as in 1996. Georgia groweis planted 400.000 acies last win ter. also the same as a y ear earliei.
