GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER Vol. aft No. 15 agconsumer line... Should cattle and sheep graze in the same pasture in a confined area? According to Department of Agriculture veterinarians, problems may be encountered by grazing both sheep and cattle together in confined pastures. One of the major problems is due to infestation with gastrointestinal parasites. Cross-transmission of large stomach worms (Haemonchus spp.) can occur between cattle and sheep and infestation may result in anemia, swelling of the lower portions of the jaw and abdomen, weakness, and some times acute death. Sheep are more highly susceptible to the adverse effects of cattle stomach worms, and stringent control measures should be implement ed if mutual grazing is in close proxim ity. Management techniques include routine dewormings, alternate grazing of cattle followed by sheep, and alterna tion of pasture land with row crops. Maintaining proper sanitation and grooming of sheep, including tail-dock ing and shearing, also will serve to decrease parasite worries. The second major problem may be competition of sheep and cattle for grasses. Sheep graze closely to the soil level, whereas cattle will leave approxi mately three inches of grass above the ground. It stands to reason that sheep will destroy available forage for cattle when maintained in intensive grazing situations. Ideally, cattle should be stocked at one animal per 1.5 acres and sheep at three to four ewes/lambs per acre. However, care should be taken to allow excess acreage and available grass when maintained together. If you have problems or questions concerning products or services regulat ed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, write: Consumer Services, Room 226, Agriculture Building, 19 M.L. King Jr., Dr., Atlanta, Georgia 30334-4201, or call toll-free, 1-800-2825852 (statewide), or in metro Atlanta, 404-656-3645. Farm Front According to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Sersice. cotton ginnings in Georgia increased in 19% over the piesjous year. In 19%. there were 2,041.500 running cotton hales ginned compared to 1,908,900 in 1095. The `96 figures also show that 2.102.750 equivalent 480-pound net weight bales were ginned, while the previous vear's totals were 1.961.800. Wednesday April 9, 1997 Copyright 1997 EIA Still Serious Threat to Horse Population Equine infectious anemia, or EIA, is a serious disease that threatens the world's horse population, according to the American Association of Equine Practitioners, who estimate that approxi mately 2,000 new cases are identified each year in the U.S., despite testing and measures to eradicate the disease. No cure is available for EIA, and although most infected horses show no symptoms, they remain infectious for life, endangering the health of other horses. For this reason, the U.S. Department of Agriculture requires euthanasia or strict lifelong quarantine for horses testing pos itive for EIA. EIA is a viral disease which affects the horse's immune system. This virus repro duces in blood cells and circulates throughout the body. The horse's immune system attacks and destroys the infected red bipod cells. The reduced blood count causes anemia, and associated inflamma- This week's Spring Equine Edition of the Market Bulletin features horse shows and events in Georgia for April, May, and June, along with advertise ments for equine, horses at stud, relat ed equipment and boarding facilities. See pages 6-8. tion can damage vital organs. EIA-infected horses can die from the virus or from related secondary infections. Called "swamp fever" because the dis ease has been associated with warm, wet weather, EIA is not limited by geography, and can occur anywhere there is a carrier and a vector to transmit it. The disease is transmitted by blood, sometimes via blood sucking insects such as horse flies, deer flies and mosquitoes. Humans also can spread the disease by using a single needle on multiple horses. EIA also can be passed from mare to foal in utero. Symptoms of EIA include the follow ing: fever and/or sudden fluctuations in temperature; depression; decreased appetite; fatigue; rapid breathing; sweat ing; rapid weight loss; bloodshot eyes with watery discharge; swelling of legs, lower chest, and abdomen; weakness character ized by wobbly or rolling gait; pale or yel lowish mucous membranes; irregular heartbeat and/or weak pulse; colic; and abortion in mares. EIA is difficult to diag nose because the symptoms vary from horse to horse and can mimic other dis eases. Additionally, some individuals may demonstrate no obvious signs. The only way to accurately determine whether a horse is infected with the EIA virus is by a serum test. The mostly com monly-used method is the Coggins test, developed 25 years ago by veterinary researcher. Dr. Leroy Coggins. Each year more than a million horses are screened for EIA by this test. The Coggins test is consistently reliable and detects the presence of EIA-specific antibodies in the blood. A negative read ing means there are not detectable anti bodies at the time of the testing. A posi tive reading indicates the horse is infected and a carrier of the virus. Advertisements of horses for sale in the Market Bulletin must be accompanied by a copy of a cur rent negative Coggins test before they are allowed to be published. The U.S. Department of Agriculture requires that horses being imported from foreign countries test negative to the Coggins test, along with other tests. Within the U.S., each state drafts its own specific requirements regarding EIA and the movement of horses interstate, intrastate, and in change of ownership. By law, EIA is a reportable disease. All pos itive cases must be filed with state veteri narians and the federal Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service office. Horses can be put at greater risk for contracting EIA through the following management and geographic factors: * close proximity to regions where EIA outbreaks have been identified; * stabling or pasture environments that have steady influx of new horses, espe cially if negative Coggins certificates are not required; * exposure to horses at shows, sales, or events, especially where stringent health care regulations are not enforced, and ver ification of a current negative Coggins test is not required; * pasturing horses in swampy areas and in areas where all horses have not been regularly tested for EIA. There is no effective treatment for EIA, no vaccine to prevent it, and no cure. The following good management guidelines, however, can reduce the potential of infec tion: (Continued on Page 12) Ag Department Brothers Save Lives of Mother, Son The Georgia Department of Agriculture prides itself on helping all citizens of Georgia, and on February 23, two of its employees proved themselves as heroes by saving the lives of Yolunda Farmer and her 17-month-old son, Diquavious Farmer. On that Sunday, Cleveland Hobby, Federal-State Shipping Point Inspection Service supervisor, and his brother, L.B. Hobby (who retired from Georgia Federal-State in 1991), were returning from their farm in rural Turner County when they came upon an overturned car with a woman pinned underneath. Both men, being in their seventies, knew theywould need help to get the woman out. L.B. went to call for help, while Cleveland remained at the scene. The woman was calling, hysterically for Cleveland to get her son out the car. (Continued on Page 12) Cleveland Hobby (left) and L.B. Hobby (center) received special recognition awards recently from Commissioner Tommy Irvin in recognition of their heroic actions in saving the lives of two auto accident victims.
