GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE - TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER Vol. 7S, No. 24 ^ LUtmKfi Fowlei ------- Association Promotes Ratite Industry in Ga. When the Georgia Ostrich Association was formed in 1992, there were few emus and rheas being raised as compared with ostrich. At that time ostrich farming was a fledgling industry in Georgia with a long way to go to reach slaughter market status. Information for producers was scarce, university poultry departments and veterinarians had limited experience with ratites, feed prices were high and the cost of birds kept rising. Well, it's come a long way, folks, but it still hasn't come full circle. As more and more Georgians began to raise ostrich, more Georgians also began to raise emus and rheas. At the same time the University of Georgia helped with research, veterinarians gained more expe rience with ratites, and the GeorgiS General Assembly appropriated money for UGA's research and passed legislation which made ratite meat processing possi ble. Finally, we declared ourselves an alternative agricultural industry in Georgia, and we were off and running. Our guest columnist this week is Wayne Fowler, President, Georgia Ratite Association, P.O. Box 72403, Albany, Ga. 31708. But we still had a long way to go. Now five years later, the GOA has become the Georgia Ratite Association. This new orga nization represents all ratites and is built on the imbedded behef that ostrich, emu and rhea are still destined to become a viable agricultural industry in Georgia, and that ratite meat is an alternative red-meat source here and worldwide. As Georgia ratite producers promote the ratite meat industry, international companies are creating interest in third world countries where ratites can produce more meat per acre than cattle. For instance, ostriches from Georgia were shipped recently to China with another shipment scheduled in July. Also, repre sentatives of the Chinese government vis ited a South Georgia packing plant to observe ratite processing. And the indus try continues to grow. The breeder market created a "false" industry which took care of itself over time. Those who got into the ratite indus try for all the wrong reasons got out of it quickly for all the right reasons. They never intended to be part of an agricultur al entity of sound growth. (Continued on Page 12) Wednesday June 12, 1996 Copyright 1996 ag consumer line... I have about four cords of oak and poplar wood that I would like to use as firewood. Farm Front Some of the wood is four inches by four inches and about 40 inches long. I plan to cut the wood into shorter lengths when I need to bum it in my wood stove. However, I've been informed by my local government that this wood is not considered firewood since it is not already cut into shorter lengths. Can you explain what is legally considered as firewood? Fireplace and stove wood, as defined by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, is any kindling logs, boards, timbers or other wood, split or not split, advertised, offered for sale, or sold as fuel. Wood of any type, for use as fuel, must be advertised, offered for sale and sold only by measure, using the term "cord" and fractional parts of a cord, or the cubic meter. A cord is the amount of wood winch is contained in a space of 128 cubic feet, when the wood is ranked and well-stowed. For the pur pose of department reflation, ``ranked and well-stowed" means that pieces of wood are placed in a line or row with the individual pieces touching and parallel to each other, and stacked in a compact manner Ifyou have problems or questions concerning products or services regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, write: Consumer Services, Room 226, Agriculture Building, 19 M.L. Commissioner Tommy Irvin was on hand recently to greet Petr Plbnin and Nikolay Davidovsky, two Russians who are on a horse-drawn expedition around the world to highlight the need to promote preservation of the environment and the world's population of workhorses. Traveling in a horse-drawn wagon or "gypsy cart" pulled by two draft horses, the two men first crossed Siberia, earning them a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records, and then ventured through Europe before beginning their journey across the United States. After their stop in Atlanta, the Russians planned to travel across the country to California. Blueberries: A Tangy Summer Tradition Blueberries conjure up images of blue-stained fingers, fresh, fruity summer desserts and warm muffins. Ways to enjoy blueberries are endless. They're tiny, but blueberries are packed with a flavor all their own. Blueberries not only taste great, but they're also a good source of vitamin C, iron and fiber. They're cholesterol-free, sodium free and an important source of potassium. Best of all, blueberries con tain only 80 calories per cup. The harvest season for fresh blueber ries in Georgia is late-May through midJuly, but frozen and canned blueberries are available year-round in most super markets. In Georgia, blueberries are grown commercially primarily in the southern part of the state, especially around Alma. Some blueberries, howev er, are successfully grown in the north Georgia mountains. "Special sales" are defined as the sale of any livestock with the exception of livestock sold at an established auction market. The sale of livestock owned by a farmer, with payments being made directly to the farmer, also is exempt. All production, consignment and dispersal sales managed by anyone other than the owner at which payment is made to sale management, are required to have a permit and must be bonded. A farmer who has a sale of his own livestock, where payment is directly to him, is required to have a permit but is not required to be bonded. The bonding requirement is not intended to create a hardship but is designed to protect Georgia farmers and owners who sell livestock in the state. Ratite Association (Continued from Page 1) With the meat market now develop ing, more and more farms are beginning to look at raising ratites as an agricultur al commodity. Ratite meat production is increasing, and the public is beginning to accept the fact that there is an alternative meat source. Those "founding mothers" who dared to start to raise ratites some 15 years ago, are now seeing their dreams come full circle. They are the pioneers, and they will be the survivors, not only for their belief in the industry, but for their will not to give up. They will be the "Old Guard" who will welcome new comers to the industry with sound advice and experience. The 20th century will greet ostrich, emu and rhea farming as one of the most important agricultural industries, produc ing the healthiest meat available todaybut it took a little time to develop. If you need more information about the Georgia Ratite Association, please contact Kathy Stoffell, Route 1, Box 146, Fort Valley, Ga. 31030, (912) 825-3745. Over-ripe blueberries are dull and lifeless in appearance. If covered proper ly and refrigerated, fresh blueberries will keep up to three weeks. Frozen blueber ries can last up to two years, if stored properly. Wash blueberries just before using. To reduce color streaking when baking with blueberries, use hard frozen blueber ries. When preparing fresh fruit salads, add blueberries last to avoid coloring other fruit. Best Ways to Enjoy Blueberries * Take a handful and pop them in your mouth. * Top blueberries with sugar, milk or cream, or add to cereal for breakfast. * Mix blueberries with other fruits like strawberries, raspberries, peaches, cantaloupe and honeydew for a fresh fruit salad. * Blueberry muffins are a favorite treat anytime. * For a delicious brunch, make blue berry waffles or pancakes and top with blueberry syrup. * Blueberries make tasty jams, jel lies and preserves. * Fill meringue shells with blueber ries and top with whipped cream for an elegant dessert. * Heap fresh blueberries or blueberry sauce on yogurt, ice cream or cheesecake. * Summer just wouldn't be the same without blueberry cobblers and pies. * Drop fresh blueberries in sparkling water for a refreshing afternoon drink. * Add a tangy twist to poultry, fish and meat by adding blueberry sauce. Did You Know... North America produces 95 percent of the world's commercial blueberry crop. Georgia's "Blueberry Capital" is Alma (Bacon County). Blueberries are native to the northern hemisphere, especially Europe and the mountains of the tropics. Most blueberries are blue-black in color, although albino forms are know to exist. After reaching their permanent Fernbank Greenhouse Giveaway During June the DeKalb School System's Fernbank Science Center green house will feature the "Thai Hot" pepper. Each visitor may take a plant home while supplies last. This Victorian greenhouse will be open to the public on Sundays only from 1-5 p.m. Visitors may enter at 1256 Briarcliff Road, 0.2 mile south of the intersection of North Decatur and Briarcliff Roads. color, blueberries change little in size, but continue to improve in sweetness and fla vor for several days. Blueberries vary in size, from 1/8 inch to more than an inch in diameter, and are coated with a powdery gray bloom. An average blueberry can contain up to 65 seeds and matures two to three months after flowering. Blueberries were first known in New England as hurtleberries. Other names developed for blueberries through the years, including huckleberries, bilberries and blaeberries. In some countries, blue berries were thought to have a medicinal quality and were used as a home remedy. Russian women once prescribed chemika, a preparation of dried blueberries, to - cure stomach discomfort. Bulletin Schedules to Change During Olympic Games The upcoming Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta July 19 - Aug. 4, will be a once-in-a-lifetime event for most Georgians. The effects of the games will be felt throughout Georgia, but especially in Atlanta. Since a number of the activi ties will be held in the Atlanta area, ser vices of many state and local government offices will be affected. This is certainly true of the headquarters of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, which is located in the heart of the Olympic pro ceedings. All state government offices have been asked to limit staff as much as possible during this period to reduce transportation gridlock and to allow Olympic attendees better access to the Games and other facilities. Although the Market Bulletin will continue to be published and mailed dur ing the Olympics, it is necessary to change publication deadlines during this period.
