GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE - TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER Vol. 7$, No. 21 ------------------------:------------------------- Farm Front Poultry Value Georgia's value of production for poultry including commercial broilers, eggs and turkeys in 1995 totaled $2.09 billion, up SI 28 million or six percent above 1994. according to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. Value of production of commercial broilers and chickens was $1.78 billion, seven per cent above 1994's figures. Value of Georgia's commercial broil ers produced during 1995 totaled $1.77 billion, a seven percent increase in value from 1994. The number of broil ers produced was 1.070 billion, which set a iccc'kI high foi the 11th consecu tive year, exceeding the 1994 produc tion of 1.005 billion birds. Pounds of broilers produced in l`W5 totaled s L4 hillimi. nine percent more than die 4.72 billion pounds produced in 1994. The average price per pound -- 34.5 cents -- decreased 0.5 cent from 1994. Georgia Floriculture The expanded wholesale value of sales for specified floriculture crops grown or finished by Georgia growers totaled S49.7 million in 1995, up live percent from the $47.5 million in 1994, according to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. This increase in wholesale value of sales from 1994 is attributed to a 14 percent increase in potted flowering plants and an eight percent hike in bedding/garden plants. There was. however, a 23 percent decrease in foliage plants. Georgia growers with annual sales greater than $10,000 totaled 219 in MW, compared to 245 in 1994. Total covered area in 1995 was 7.576.000 square feet, one percent below 1994. Market Bulletin Schedule To Change During Olympics The upcoming Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta July 19 - August 4, will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for most Georgians, and the effects of the Games will be felt throughout the state, especially in Atlanta. Since a number of events will be held in the downtown Atlanta area, services of many state gov ernment offices will be affected. This cer tainly is true for the headquarters of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, which is located in the heart of the Olympic proceedings. All state govern ment offices have been asked to reduce staff as much as possible during this peri od to reduce transportation gridlock and to allow Olympic attendees better access to the Games and other facilities. Department of Agriculture Regulates Bedding Materials Most residents of Georgia are famil iar with the tags found on pillows, mat tresses and other bedding materials which state: "Do not remove under penalty of law," but perhaps some people aren't aware that the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Consumer Protection Division regulates these products. Georgia and Utah are the only states in which bedding is regulated by the department of agriculture. The Georgia Health Department previously regulated bedding, but the responsibility shifted to the Georgia Department of Agriculture under Gov. Jimmy Carter's administra tion. State bedding regulations apply to all items stuffed or filled in whole or part with concealed materials intended for use by any human being for sleepmg purposes. Mattresses, box springs, con vertible sofas and other sleeping acces sories, such as mattress pads, pillows and comforters, are included. Operations engaged in the commercial sale of sec ond-hand bedding also are regulated. All bedding manufacturers, renova tors or reupholsterers are required to reg ister with the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Each bedding product sold must have a cloth-backed tag (referred to ag consumer line... How long can fresh, shelled pecans be stored before they begin tasting rancid? This tag should include the following information: --The name of the materials used to fill the article of bedding. --The name and address of the manu facturer, renovator, upholsterer or vendor. --A statement describing the article as either made of new materials, previ ously used materials or second-hand. --The certificate of registration num ber issued by the department. Second-hand articles must have the words "sterilized" and "date sterilized" on their tags. Sterilization procedures must be approved by the department. On dual-purpose articles of bedding, such as sleep sofas, the tag must be attached to the front edge of the platforms. The tag also must state the follow ing: "Under penalty of law - this tag not to be removed except by the consumer." The tags are designed to inform and assure the consumer of the contents of the bedding and to promote uniformity of terminology among the states. While you may feel an overwhelm ing desire to rip the law tag off, it may be a good idea for it to be left intact for future reference. Knowing the composi tion of bedding supplies may be impor tant if allergies are a problem or if the product is recalled for some reason. (Continued on Page 12) UNDER PENALTY OF LAW THIS TAG NOT TO BE REMOVED EXCEPT ST THE CONSUMER Can you help settle an argument between me and my co-workers? I say that banana consumption is higher than apple consumption, but they disagree. Who is right? U.S. banana consumption climbed to 28 pounds per person in 1994 mak ing them the most popular fresh-mar ket fruit consumed in America. Apples trailed with nearly 20 pounds per per son, while orange consumption aver aged 15 pounds per person. Almost all of the U.S. banana supply is imported from Central and South America. Ifyou have problems or questions con cerning products or services regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, write: Consumer Services, Room 226, Agriculture Building, 19 M.L.
